Undertaker and Vader are close family friends to the Harts, and tried to warn Bret. It's the reason that they weren't on the Raw dedication episode for Owen. They were actually at the Hart household with the family.
Never knew that. I was 12 in 1996 so that 80’s/90’s was the era I grew up with. Thanks for that info!
Well of course Vader wasn’t there, he left wwf in 98

Earl knew it wasn't a "work." He left the ring like he was double parked.
He and Shawn got outta there real quick so Shawn could show Earl his freshly restocked fannypack
As he would if he was selling the work.
From my understanding, Bret wasn't upset that he had to drop his belt on the way out, it was the ending of the match that he disagreed with. They were trying to put it down to him tapping out to his own move the "Sharpshooter". But Bret said no way would he tap to it, finish it any other way. I guess it got under Vince's skin so bad, that he marched down and called for the bell. But, that was just what I had heard through various tellings
@@aaronburtram3175 Here's a full breakdown.
Shawn and Bret didn't like each other. Shawn was known to be a massive prick backstage, and Bret didn't like that. But Bret still did his job and put Shawn over at WrestleMania 12. The plan was for Shawn to hold the title for a year, and drop the belt at Wrestlemania 13 to Bret.
Mere weeks before the event, Shawn, in an act of spite, fakes a knee injury and tells the world that he "lost his smile." The belt is vacated, put on Taker who wrestles Sid at Mania, and Bret wrestles Steve Austin in a fucking corker of a match. Pulling off a perfect double turn. Bret became a heel in everywhere that wasn't Canada, wins the title back.
In the background, WWF are going through a pretty significant money problem, as WCW are kicking their ass. Vince tells Bret that he doesn't want to make him an offensive offer, and that he should take the deal WCW had offered. Bret signs with WCW and his contract is set to expire at Survivor Series 1997.
The plan became pretty simple. Bret drops the belt to Shawn at Survivor Series, and then he'd take off. About 6 months before Survivor Series as Bret is feuding with HBK and DX, is the infamous "Sunny Days" promo. Where Shawn implies that a married Hart is having an affair with Sunny. Bret goes fucking ballistic backstage.
Leading into the PPV, which is in Montreal, Shawn tells Bret that he'd never put him over. Bret goes to Vince and tells him that he doesn't want to drop the belt to Shawn in Montreal. He's happy to drop it to Taker, Austin, anyone else, not Shawn. Vince tells him he has to. Bret says "well, my WCW contract doesn't kick in until December 1, why don't I make a special appearance, uncontracted on Raw the next night and drop it to someone else?" Vince didn't agree. Bret finally said "ok, I'll drop it on Raw to Shawn, but I'm not dropping it at Survivor Series." Vince agreed.
And the rest plays out in front of the world. Vince is paranoid. Shawn is a bratty little turd. Hebner only cares that he gets paid.
So in summary. Bret took a stand that he wasn't going to lose that match under any circumstances.

That's actually a good point . Seeing what happened at ringside , you can see all were in on it even the referee. @@Rob-bd7tt I am not lying. I will stand my ground on this one. I had no personal liking for Bret Hart. I just knew he was a top rated wrestler during the 90s but I never even considered him during that era. I started watching his old matches in the year 2009 and realized how he laid the foundation of working inside the ring and being creative and making use of things around him to the best of his story telling. Easy for you to say the word "capping".
I'm sure the Screwjob wasn't a work but the odd thing is if Vince and co. Booked that ending and pitched it to Bret, Bret probably would've been fine with it. It helps Bret's stock going to WCW, it helps out Vince and Austin but it also doesn't do much for HBK winning the title in that manner. I'm sure by then, Bret knew Shawn was just a placeholder for Austin anyways.
No way. Bret wasn't that guy.
Bret didn’t want to lose the belt in his own country
Bret wouldn't have been fine with it. It wasn't an ending problem, it was a Shawn spitting in his face moment.
He would lose to anyone but Shawn.
He didn't want to lose it in Canada he actually told Vince way before that he was happy to drop the belt the next day after Canada. It was really important for him not to lose in front of his home crowd because it was his last show there in the WWF.

Not many people can say they whooped Vince for real and get away with it.
Vince let him do it. Im not saying Bret couldn't have done it without the free shot, but it explains how he got away with it. If Vince hadn't already decided to be honorable in his own weird way, it would have been a fight and then Vince would have tried to make Bret's life hell.

All I know is, Bret Hart was a great performer, his feud with Shawn Michaels was one of the craziest, best feuds in WWE history, and no matter what the guy is a legend. Screwjob or not.
It’s truly a shame that Bret’s injuries and devastation to his health prevented him from staying in top shape after his retirement. It would have been awesome if he’d returned and he was still the legendary wrestler he was. It was so cold the way Vince did Bret after all the years of work he'd put in at WWF. You can tell he's speaking the truth because he's more than happy for people to ask anybody else who was in the room what happened because he knows they'll verify what he's said time after time.
What's cold about not letting your top star leave to the rival company with your promotion's top prize after a previous worker did the same, taking the title with them and defacing it live on air?
@@MindGamingMantis Vince had his reasons but he fucked Bret over big time. Yes, Bret was intransigent but that was only because HBK was a massive douchebag and disrespected Bret so badly that even he, flagbearer of tradition and true wrestling that he is, refused to give Shawn the rub on his way out.
The Alundra Blaze counter-argument is a moot point because Bret would've never contemplated whoring out the WWF title like that and Vince knew the same (which makes it worse -- Vince took advantage of Bret's loyalty and that's one of the most sickening aspects of the Screwjob).
Bret was grateful for everything that Vince had given him and he returned the favour by busting his ass nearly 24/7 and delivering 5* classics every time he had the opportunity. Vince undervalued Bret and it's a shame he and Austin never got a sequel to their Wm13 maatch.
To be fair Bret refused to lose his title before going to WCW so Vince had no choice but to fuck bret over.
@@Gazzi79That's not true at all. Bret wanted to drop the belt to Ken Shamrock before jumping to WCW.
@@Gazzi79 That's a valid point if you're taking a broad view but it ignores the context. Bret hated Shawn's guts at the time and had a legitimate reason to feel aggrieved by him'; Bret would've dropped the title to ANYBODY except HBK.
Yes, Vince needed the belt on HBK to put Austin over but he could've easily had Bret lose to Taker and then have had Kane screw the latter out of the belt. This was Vince taking a hard line and trying to assert himself over Bret -- the whole charade was pointless: Vince looked like a scumbag and Bret was incredibly upset for years over the whole thing. It accomplished nothing and better booking would've fixed everything.

I remember Ric Flair showing up to the Funeral Parlor with the World Championship Wrestling title in WWF back in 1991.. I also remember Alundra Blayze throwing the WWF Women's title in the trash . Vince didn't want that to happen at all.. it was ok for Ric coming in but not for Bret going out.. what's hilarious though is Vince buys the competitor anyways. Felt bad for the wrestlers checks bouncing but that's what happens when you stack your roster with way too many ppl. The cruiserweight division alone was stacked and WWE took advantage of this with Eddie,Benoit,Y2J but Austin started the turning point on the wars.. Vince capitalized on the whole Eric Bischoff getting thrown around so he took a few stunners.

I watched the clip and it looked super fake. Real anger isn't as theatrical as that spitting / smashing equipment. And Bret probably would have sued for breach of contract since he had creative control
Bret had "reasonable creative control". Leaving the WWF for WCW and never having lost the championship isn't being reasonable. Do you have any idea how bad it would have looked if WCW advertised that they signed the WWF champion? That would have made the WWF look second-rate, and made the new WWF champion look very weak because they would have never beat the former champion in the ring.

I read in an article years ago that taker was furious. He kicked down one of those black trash cans down, and that taker told vince to go bret and do the right thing. And that's when vince took a good one like man/ champ from bret.
There are a few reasons as to why this was a work… 1 being contracts, 2 being recorded with the microphone. But 3 and most importantly, Bret said he gave Vince a left hook…. Funny… because if you punch someone with a left hook, their right eye would be busted, why is it Vince’s left eye was black? And if so nothing happened to his nose… a left hook would do major damage to that entire area if Bret gave him a left hook attempting to his his left eye for whatever reason… I just think this perhaps the last of the works in an era where they are tight lipped on what’s “real” and what’s not… Can’t say I don’t love it and don’t remember it. I personally have a huge emotional connection to this time of my life. So kudos to them all.
Congratulations Bret!
You have officially answered this question for the 10,000th time.
Now, what are your feelings on working with Goldberg, and how did you feel about how WCW used you?
💀💀💀
Doesn’t make Bret sound overly bitter at all.
His brother died in a crazy accident and WCW screwed him over after Montreal. Of course he is.
He has every right to be.
Brett is always noted for his honesty, and telling it like it is. If the screw job was a work, he would say so, especially after all this time!
I made sure that I was there for every 1 Of his matches he was wrestling
The G.O.A.T hands down
In other settings, he has halfway admitted that it was a work. He knows that it was a work, but he doesn't KNOW that he knows it. Like O.J. or Jeffrey MacDonald. "Absolutely 100% shoot".
Brett should write a book entitled "If I Worked It". Generally, the closer to the business people are, the more likely they are to suspect that it was a work and the more "markish" they are, the more likely they are to fully believe in it, and it has been said that Bret is his own biggest mark.
💩 🧠
So you're an idiot, or trying to provoke a reaction?
agreed 100% a work. no it wasn't booked for him to comeback and do that BS run as a senior. it was done to give him the biggest story in the Wrestling world going into his new high paying job at wcw
@@MidKnighToker You don't think that was booked for him to come back in 2001 or 2002 -- after the three-year contract with WCW was up? I think it likely was. And then Owen's death and the concussion moved it out to 2010.
Shawn's revenge of being screwed outta the WWF Tag Team Championships by the Hart Foundation in 1990.
Lol, because the ropes broke right? They didn’t wanna televise out or something????
The best thing about this whole story is that Bret had the tapes running while he was filming his documentary to show the real truth. Vince was a stoned face liar. Bret always told the truth and the tapes show it. Thanks for everything you ever said and did. You were a real CHAMPION that the people were proud of. Thanks CHAMP
I wish bret couldve found happiness and gratefulness for his one of a kind hof career. He stays so miserable its sad
He s just answering questions with straight answers. U think someone asked him how his day was and he said, “it was screwy, like the Montreal Screwjob”?
Also he came from a wrestling family. He had his prime cut short and had a stroke due to someone’s negligence, ironically when he always took great care about his opponents’ safety. Anyone would hv been bitter
@@austinsavageIt's crazy how someone answering a simple question somehow makes him "bitter" 😂
Owens death was the real stinger.
"Wrestlers who lie for a living say that this wasn't a lie."
Mr Hart was always one of my favorite wrestlers growing up. You could tell by all his wrestling moves. He knew what he was doing and was a real wrestler 💯
darn I remember as a kid watching Brett hart with my grandmother who has every ppv taped back into the 80s and action figures. eating KFC BBQ chicken or dominoes when the noid was still going strong. he was the man. him and Shawn Michael's. then stone cold, the rock and Goldberg came out... yet the undertaker still survived
God to hand it to Bret. Staying in character here to protect the integrity of the greatest work ever produced. He'll reveal it in his will.
As he said, only idiots believe that.
He’s still the most bitter man in wrestling
Sure is. And with every right to be.
@@Nero__Morte it gets tiring to hear the same old woe is me spiel from him over and over
@Nero__Morte not really, he got paid to do what he did, very well. He's just bitter his style is boring af
@@bannedfreespeech his style deffo wasn’t boring, I still believe him to be one of the best wrestlers ever but hes so bitter and all his interviews are so depressing
He has no reason to lie about anything. The way he's telling it is the way it happened. Period!
He hasn’t stopped crying about it for years.
@@nissy9220 Please post the timestamp where he's crying. Cause I missed it.
I love this man so much my idol as a kid I believe him 100%
The biggest and oldest mark for himself and the business says it wasn’t a work? I totally believe him😂
A guy named himself after a video game controller said Bret is a liar.. Well that's all we need to talk about.
@@cainekass So if I named myself Paul Heyman you would believe it? Not even children would come up with such a comment and with that logic.
No. How you wrote that sentence suggests either you’re a child and should not be taken seriously, or you have some some cognitive challenges. Again should not be taken seriously.
@@dualshock3462 did you figure it out yet smooth brain or do you need me to hold your hand and use smaller words?
This tells me that it was in fact a work.
How so?
Holly f*ck! Everybody fom Mcmahon to Michaels, HHH, Hebner and god knows who else could all say this WASN'T a work and morons would still say "nahh".
