this has better music and sound effects right down to the fire ball than any mario game that ever followed it, this was the high water mark for gaming!
My older brother played these games when he was little, i started off with N64 and Super Mario 64. I got into it a couple of mouths ago, and im surprised to say that this game is incredible. It hasnt aged much like Super Mario 64 has, but still gives you the classic challenge you endured in the 90's
As a child born in 1989 who Mario 3 passed over,* Super Mario World has always been "my 2D Mario." Well, that and Land 2 counting the Game Boy. The moment I see that super saturated color palette the Super Nintendo could deliver, I'm instantly transported back to playing on my cousin's SNES. * Don't worry. I've appreciated it since, currently on 3DS.
One thing I love about this game is the soundtrack. Even though it's really small, it is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, Mario soundtrack ever.
I think a problem that many of us fall into is that we experience that one Nintendo game that is so enthralling and turns us on our heads that we judge every other game onwards by that stand-alone experience. And if a game doesn't elicit the same emotions you experienced playing that one special game, then it's automatically not as good. I'm guilty of that. And in the many roads and moods I've traveled and waded through as a gamer, I've come back to games I once dismissed only to suddenly see the brilliance of their mechanics that I missed the first time-- that first time spent judging the game through a set of massive nostalgia goggles. I've also returned to games that I once thought were amazing... only to see they've crumbled to dust due to age. But to see comments saying that no other Mario game compares to SMW... it just makes me sad for those people. There are some brilliant current Mario games out there. I found 3D Land a bit of a bore but 3D World was rife with polish and invention. It both expands and pays homage to Mario and his history in smart ways. Likewise, I found Skyward Sword to be an utterly lacking experience, but appreciated the motion controls. But then Nintendo releases ALBW and it's everything great about Zelda and more. Basically, if you stay locked in the past insisting to yourself that no other game can compare to what you experienced through a set of younger eyes... you're going to miss out on some truly great, if not better, experiences-- equally as memorable as to what you experienced in the past. No, they won't all be great. You may encounter a Skyward Sword or a 3D Land... but if you let those lackluster experiences stop you, you'll never experience the richness of 3D World or ALBW. Basically, don't let your past keep you locked away from a bright future teeming with amazing new games. Embrace new horizons but also celebrate the brilliance of the past... which is what 3D World does masterfully.
when i first played this game,i was astonished about it,s graphics, sound effects, beautyfull music, brighter colors, and that you can save the game a ride on yoshi. it simply blowed supermariobros3 all the way out of the water.
Heres a helpful secret i found a few months ago: If you go to the first Star World warp point and complete Star Road all the way to the center, you can instantly go to the final level in the game, Bowsers castle! Im still truckin along to complete that, its surprisingly challenging!
@zebure I never said that the All-Star ones were on the Virtual Consoles. The reason there is no SMW on SMASWii is that the version that IS an "upgrade" isn't distinctive enough to warrant an inclusion. If you want it, go get it with the rest of the originals on the VC. You probably already have, but my point remains the same.
Good-times, this was my first official video-game I came with my gane-boy that my uncle bought for me when I was kindergarten. I still playing it from time to time even though im in high-school this game never loses it's Swag.
This was the very first video game I ever played however it took me longer to beat than the classic Mario games for NES for some reason. I played those games on Super Mario All-Stars for SNES. This game is so good.
@zebure It doesn't have an updated "All-Star" version, and it's already available on the Virtual Console. The other 4 do and, therefore, those versions are included.
I have the Gameboy Advance version of this, it's got a bunch of improvements like being able to save any time on the map, you can choose your character (Luigi jumps higher) though I find the added voices a little irritating.
In terms of characters back then, I thought the sonic games had more but super mario world is so large and creative, such a good game. I played a few years ago on VC but I had played it when it came out too. It's probably the mario game I've spent and been willing to play the most. I never knew this and super mario bros. 3 were released so close to each other.
@kR0B45 No, actually it's not. There's the Title Theme, Credits Theme, Underground Theme, Overworld Theme, and Overworld 2 just to name a few. And they all have a distinct sound.
Best mario game of all time !! My super nintendo is at my auntys house . But she is dubai right now. But when She get back , im going to get my super nintendo back !
The debate on which is the better mario game, smb3 or smw is strikingly similar to the debate between ocarina of time and majora's mask and the debate between smg1 and smg2.
From the Donut Plains to the Illusive Forest to the VANILLA DOME 4! Now, I really want to get my SNES back so I can play me some Champions World Class Soccer, F-Zero, Donkey Kong Country, some Game Boy games and of course, Super Mario World.
@SonofMrPeanut actually, it really does have an "upgraded version", named super mario all stars + super mario world, that was... well... super mario all stars plus super mario world. However this version of super mario world included different sprites for both mario and luigi and up to four save files.
@GearsofWumbology I didnt say that they sound the same, i said that it is the same theme rearranged 4 times. Basically most of the level themes are the same, but remixed in some way.
No mention of the spin jump/brick-drilling boots? That's the first big change I noticed in 1991 when I first played this game. Yoshi and the feather are memorable, but why not the spin jump? Also, the spin jump was what was missing from Mario 64 and Sunshine that cinched Galaxy 1&2 as vastly superior games in my eyes.
yes but when you think about it the game was one of the launch titles for the system and this was back when the people did not know how to make games on the super nintendo to their maximum potential but for a launch title it was an amazing launch title
This was my favorite Mario game that I have played. I haven't played galaxy yet but I have heard that it's amazing. I can only hope it's better than "Super Mario World"---- my fave!!!
I don't see why we shouldn't, the gba had similar hardware capabilities as the snes and had a fair share of snes-ported games. And the 3ds is obviously capable. Nintendo are even introducing full retail game downloads to the wii-u and 3ds later this year...
Can someone help me with this game? I downloaded the Virtual Console version and beat Bowser, but now I'm at the 'congratulations' screen and it won't go away. I've been waiting for a long time now and it's still there. How do I fix this?
The Ghost house in the 3rd world and the impossible to find the real exit in the forest in the 4th world was what might have killed it for me when it came to Super Mario World. So much, that I had to look online how to get the shortcut to bowser's castle just to finish the game on my GBA and Wii's Virtual Console. Perhaps a remake of these classic games could really use a Super Playthough to help those like myself who were loosing more than 20 lives on one level that was proving too hard.
Love SMB 3 & SMW, but I liked Mario in his original red overalls blue shirt, & red hat outfit a lot better! & Luigi in his green overalls & blue shirt, & green hat!! Mario &Luigi looked better & more colorful when the color of their hats matched their color of their overalls!!
But even if the later levels are too hard for me to complete, I always enjoy playing though the first world of Super Mario Bros World, it was just perfection and Nintendo at their best in the 2D platform genre.
4:14... In the movie(which was released before this game) he's portrayed as a Velociraptor and I tend to think he is one in the game as well, abiet in a "Sonic The Hedgehog"(a hedgehog, standing on two feet) or "Tazzie Devil"(a tasmanian devil, but only identifiable by the sound he makes, which is actually the noise they really do make) kind of way.
I was born 5 days after this game out.when i was 10 i found this game in my aunts basement.I spent 3 hours findingall of the parts to my aunts sons super nintendo just to play this game.
all beautifully said again. can you guys help my students out with their writing assignments?but seriously, that small gap between SMB3 and SMW was that small only in the west, I have commented on it before, and I`ll do it again: SMB 3-...3 ... almost three... THREE YEARS to come to Europe?! glad I had the bootleg. bought the OG when it FINALLY came out tho!
Super Mario World was my first console videogame and i still remember it freshly, i played it for hours and hours over and over again, the cartridge didnt work (it was an used game from my unlce and apparently he broke it somehow) so i was never able to save the game so played only the first levels and got as far as i could every time i played. It was awesome PD: Comparing SMW with Galaxy 2 is an insult
this is probably the only side scrolling mario game im good at. well this and yoshis island. mostly cause those are the games i had as a kid. ustu sneak my gameboy into school and play during study hall
That ending made it. Miss you guys. My heart hurts at your absences...
What a great way to start my day; watching a CGR game review. :) Love this game too.
this has better music and sound effects right down to the fire ball than any mario game that ever followed it, this was the high water mark for gaming!
+James Cage i see you everywhere stevens fan. i miss him in the nhl actually, always thought pronger>stevens though!
Grigori Rasputin nobody was greater then stevens haha, we must think alike my friend
I've been waiting for this review since CGR started‼ Not only is this the best Mario game but its also one of the best games of all time
Most definitely in my top ten favourite games of all time. The controls are just perfect and it's pure fun from start to finish.
I first played this game 10 years after it came out, and it still became one of my all time favorites!
this dude is my favorite reviewer from cgr. really knows what he's doing!
My older brother played these games when he was little, i started off with N64 and Super Mario 64. I got into it a couple of mouths ago, and im surprised to say that this game is incredible. One of the Top 5 games ever made on any console !
It’s been seven years since this was published. Time to start feeling nostalgic about UA-cam videos
Fuck, it’s been 5 years since you made this comment… LET THAT SHIT SETTLE
@@nathansyupp1137 seriously lol. 5 to 7 years is like a dead zone for nostalgia. It takes at least 10
The stuff legends are made of....
It just occurred to me that the is game is 20 years old. A masterpiece, and I don't use that word lightly. One of my favourites of all-time.
This vid brings back SO many good memories.. *sigh* Good ole dayz.. Thanks for uploading mate =]

This game is what introduced me to the video-games magic in my chilldhood.
You gotta love the Baby bowser boss fights in this game. They never got boring.
Its truly amazing what Nintendo did with SMW
still, Mario should not hit Yoshi on his head every time in this game
lol
pietje bel
He's more so pointing his hand forward to command Yoshi to throw out his tongue.
Randall Gallegos no, he really hits him on the head with his fist
(just watch in slow mo)
2:00 "Good thing I found a magic balloon!" - Mama Luigi
One thing I love about this game is the soundtrack.

Just bought a Super Nintendo and bought this as the first game. UUGGGGGHHHH YES

it wa so epic at the end when he got all three circles and a 1up mushroom every time in the extra life room at the end of the video
1:52 I'M SO SORRY YOSHI
+EqualsPeach LOL, I'm guessing you got that from SomeCallMeJohnny
Indeed. =P
***** XD

dude nice review!!! i love this game
This was the very first video game I ever played however it took me longer to beat than the classic Mario games for NES for some reason. I played those games on Super Mario All-Stars for SNES.
This game is so good.
good job on the extra men at the end!
im glad i was born in the late 80s and grew up in the 90s ... best video games ever...
@zebure It doesn't have an updated "All-Star" version, and it's already available on the Virtual Console. The other 4 do and, therefore, those versions are included.
FISTS of flame? For almost 27 years I thought that Mario spat them!! Mind BLOWN!
Super mario world is the master of the Super Nintendo classics.
What is the techno-like song at the very beginning of the video?!?! I want it!!
I have the Gameboy Advance version of this, it's got a bunch of improvements like being able to save any time on the map, you can choose your character (Luigi jumps higher) though I find the added voices a little irritating.
I was playing this yesterday, is still awesome!!!, better than much of the modern games out there.
@4:18- That's what she said.
Gutted I missed this one, I even had a snes when I was little. If I see this on the eShop, few quid, I'm buying it
WONDERFUL review young man.
This has always been my favorite mario game.

Great review, flawless game. I think it's the best game of the best game serie. Mario is like Citizen Kane for video games..
You got the Mario koopa heads. You are a champ.
This game and super mario bros 3 are two games that have really made my childhood.
I so can't wait for super mario 3d land.
Was 3d land good?
@kR0B45 No, actually it's not. There's the Title Theme, Credits Theme, Underground Theme, Overworld Theme, and Overworld 2 just to name a few. And they all have a distinct sound.
lol I Wonder how long it took to record that perfect bonus stage run at the end?
This game is classic Mario perfection.
Best mario game of all time !!
My super nintendo is at my auntys house . But she is dubai right now.
But when She get back , im going to get my super nintendo back !
Nice Mario Bros. Movie reference, Derek =)
The debate on which is the better mario game, smb3 or smw is strikingly similar to the debate between ocarina of time and majora's mask and the debate between smg1 and smg2.
Man, I loved this game. I had a port to the Game Boy Advance. Good Times. :D
From the Donut Plains to the Illusive Forest to the VANILLA DOME 4!

@123SIXX123 does that mean the next mario will start a whole new era? that'll be intresting...

I totally agree... stuff retconning. Mario Mario and Luigi Mario FOREVER!

I just bought one! Awesome game
i love this game haha i still play it on my snes
@123SIXX123
So whatever follows Galaxy 2 will be Yoshi's Island and be the most creative 3D mario game.
96 Stars on the Super Nintendo and Gameboy Advanced SP. Greatest game ever!
Good review derek:-)
@Collseth So what? Emulation or not, it's a fun game!
The Ghost house in the 3rd world and the impossible to find the real exit in the forest in the 4th world was what might have killed it for me when it came to Super Mario World.

The feather is my favorite it makes him bigger and also fly
Love SMB 3 & SMW, but I liked Mario in his original red overalls blue shirt, & red hat outfit a lot better! & Luigi in his green overalls & blue shirt, & green hat!! Mario &Luigi looked better & more colorful when the color of their hats matched their color of their overalls!!

Such a great game! Ahhh
its still an awesome system that i feel has yet to show us its full potential.
LOVE THIS GAME!
I was born 5 days after this game out.when i was 10 i found this game in my aunts basement.I spent 3 hours findingall of the parts to my aunts sons super nintendo just to play this game.
I loved playing the game boy adaptation of this
Possibly the best Mario game ever IMO
all beautifully said again. can you guys help my students out with their writing assignments?but seriously, that small gap between SMB3 and SMW was that small only in the west, I have commented on it before, and I`ll do it again: SMB 3-...3 ... almost three... @Caleb1upman how do you sleep at night knowing you have not played a classic
Super Mario World was my first console videogame and i still remember it freshly, i played it for hours and hours over and over again, the cartridge didnt work (it was an used game from my unlce and apparently he broke it somehow) so i was never able to save the game so played only the first levels and got as far as i could every time i played. I see your Starman... and raise you one Yoshi.
Finally Super Mario World played on the real thing and not on an emulator!
I love CGRundertow
The plain names and the numbers after them didn't tip you off?
Oh. The memories. To bad it didn't have 2 player. (simultaneously/co-op)
"This games levels have a distinct flavor all their own among the Super Mario games."
I see what you did there.
Best Mario Game of All Time!!!!!!
They did . For the gba,and virtual console
I always though of Yoshi as a raptor myself.
Pure masterpiece.
@123SIXX123 That's true, but I don't care if a game tries something different, just as long as it does it well.
This is an amazing game! I'll always like this one better than Galaxy.
to me,the best game of all-time
this is probably the only side scrolling mario game im good at. well this and yoshis island. mostly cause those are the games i had as a kid. ustu sneak my gameboy into school and play during study hall
