Dear people moderating without a lot knowledge of game mechanics: the clip in 4-2 is a glitch, you can do it yourself even. This version looks weird cause it is the arcade version. The plants have weird hitboxes witch is why nifski goes thru them without dying. Get a rom and try this out yoruself before making guesses.
crazy fingers did a bunch of backwards bumps to trigger the 4-2 glitch. I tried so many times to replicate it but it was too hard. Of course what Niftski did is in my opinion ever more difficult.
GGs Niftski! Glad to see this category I saw potential in become absolutely destroyed from new strategies, techniques, and overall amazing execution. Don't know if I care to beat this time myself but would love to see more runners give this game a shot (-Spiker, FWR holder)
Idk if me and spiker ever shared this with anyone but we discovered that doing Johnny boy saves a framerule in 1-1. You probably have figured this out yourself but I thought I would mention it
@@Kosmicd12But Niftski’s splits only go to the tenth, meaning only 1/10 of a second. Also, precise runs have multiple frame perfect inputs back to back (as you obviously know)
Hmmm. I had to look this up. I remember the official Vs. Super Mario Bros. arcade release (yeah, I'm that old!), but wasn't familiar with "Home Edition." So it's some kind of ROM Hack to closely emulate Vs. SMB on NES, and appears to have been originally shared in 2012. Here, I guess Niftski is using a later 2014 version. I'd be curious to know if anyone can explain whether the gameplay is exactly the same as NES SMB1, or if there are some subtle differences. And does anyone know the source material for this ROM Hack? Is it a level by level rebuild using an SMB1 ROM? Or is it a Vs. SMB arcade rom that's been hacked to support playback on different platforms / emulators? Would also like to know what was different been the 2012 & 2014 versions of this Hack, and if there have been any expert appraisals as to how closely this adhears to the original Vs. SMB arcade game, in terms of gameplay & level copies.
@tubezone666 yeah, I saw the wikipedia page mention that the arcade version featured some "new levels" that were later used for The Lost Levels. I'm wondering which levels those were, because I didn't see anything other than typical SMB1 levels in this speedrun, with the exception of the different Warp Pipe in 4-2.
@@AkumaAPN Mariowiki has a page outlining a number of specific changes made from SMB1. The biggest changes relevant to this speedrun are bricks in 1-2 that prevent an easier version of the clip, a change in the location of the pipe to the 4-2 warp zone, the removal of the pipes to worlds 7 and 8 in the 4-2 warp zone, completely new levels for 6-3, 6-4, 7-2, and 7-3 (which were later used in TLL), a change to the maze solution in 7-4, and small changes to the coin block next to the walljump pipe and to Bowser's bridge in 8-4. There are a lot of other changes too, and I doubt Mariowiki lists all of them. But it's worth pointing out that people have ROM dumps of Vs. SMB. The CPU and I think memory map on the conversion kit were roughly the same as in the NES, but the PPU was different. So some changes would have to be made to the Vs. dump to make it run on an NES emulator, but probably not much. One very likely difference is a change in the color of fire mario. EDIT: One potentially important difference is that the speed that the game timer runs can be changed by the arcade operator with a DIP switch, which could change fireworks. So it depends what setting this ROM hack uses. Moreover, there are two versions of this game: the conversion kit and a standalone arcade cabinet. I don't know if their ROMs differ at all.
Congratulations on a great WR! This is a terrific run, I love seeing stages that don't show up in most Any % formats. Out of curiosity - there are obviously glitches in the SMB1 Any % run that weren't part of this (flagpole glitch, pipe clip in 1-2, Bullet Bill in 8-2). Are these not possible in this version of the game, or have they just not been worked into this run yet?
Hi, former vs smb1 wr holder here, all the glitches you mentioned are indeed possible in this game AND 1-2G pipe clip has already been done and proven to save time (same with FPG but depends on the level). However 8-2 BBG, while possible, is completely RNG in this game because unlike regular smb1, there is no way to manipulate enemy patterns from framerules to have the bullet shoot on time to gain timesave. Hope this helps!
@@spikerSR thanks, that's really interesting. I find the technical details that SMB speedrunners get into fascinating, and it's good to know that there's still a lot of room for a category that's cool to watch.
Actually no, the main problem is that traditional sockfolder FPG would not save time in 1-1 in this game due to the framerule remainder being different from regular smb1. However you CAN save time in 1-1 with a method of FPG known as jonnyboy setup, which saves more time than a regular FPG setup and allows an extra framerule to be saved
wow dude.. i remember the good old days when my measily 10:33.xx was world record.. this run is just a whole different level of frame rule madness.. are you fixing to improve upon your time some more.. like 7-4 improvement and flag pole glitches? anyway awesome run dude. you are truly the master... that pb and gold splits though lol.. btw.. my win with small Mario only while on an arcade category is still undefeated... oops... shouldn't have said anything... never mind
Yo is it not possible to crouch slide under bowser at the end? or kill him with fire faster than it takes to depower? i assume not since niftski didn’t lose time and also popped tf off, but just curious why things are the way they are
Going under bowser from a backwards and turn pattern are both impossible without taking damage. You could theoretically go under a turn if you have mario positioned more to the right via backwards bumping something, but there isn't a way to currently do that in the last room of 8-4
Nice run! I got 0.20.00 on the first level on Nintendo championship on the switch after 30 times trying something like that. I only speedrunnend super mario 64 a few times before. Lol i thought it was 0.20.00 but it was 0.22.00. but i can't use the pipe i tried now on the switch on nintendo championships
There was recently a TAS released where Bad Apple was played in Super Mario Bros using arbitrary code execution. That makes me hopeful that a credits warp glitch is found in the future where you can warp to 8-4 from 1-1. What do you think?

Doing the 1up trick at the end of 6-1 is always fun. Why do you get the mushroom on 6-1? Isn't it easier to be small Mario for speedruns?

What does the minus world look like in this version of SMB?
At this point I'm desensitized.

I seriously don't know how you split so precisely haha
Splitting is a way less precise trick than most of the tricks in this run 😂😂😂
@@magician531 no it's MORE precise. 100 decimals per second vs. 60 frames per second
