  • Back when I was researching for my book, "How to Make a Plant Love You: Cultivate Green Space in Your Home and Heart", I visited the herbarium at my alma mater at Cornell University and now wanted to take you for a visual tour.

How absolutely enjoyable and interesting. I've had a coconut from 1974 when in elementary a friend brought me from Florida for a souvenir. I've kept it all these years. My friend passed sadly very young. (24) But this has inspired me to make a tag for it.

As a botanist I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and really look forward to having online access to their scanned specimens. I imagine the palm collection contains many of the Hispaniolan endemics that I photograph.

I absolutely love the lost art of pressed flowers. This was so interesting, I really enjoy your channel as it often feels like a documentary of the world of nature, rather than just another plant lover offering advice. So far this was one of my favorite segments. Keep it coming!

LOVE it! As a child I started a 'herbarium', pressing plants (back then, in the early 1970s, small plant-press things for children were popular). I did not really go on with it. I prefer living, growing plants over pressed ones. And making drawings and watercolour paintings of them.
At the moment I'm busy drawing illustrations for a book on easy house-plants (for children, mostly on how to take cuttings). I'm inspired by old botanical illustrations. I hope you can show more of those ...

That's my kind of place, where you find others who are interested in Nature, where they welcome others without labeling them as strange and avoid them, for having these fascinations. (Sometimes school systems and classroom settings are not advantageous for little people who are interested in everything and hope to learn and not just watch disinterested others being disciplined, in a place where they are all forced to go for 12 years.) This guest host is wonderful and a natural Spokeswoman, for sharing all aspects of a pressed leaf, to include stories and histories behind the catalogued specimens. It's fun to see everything in order and ongoing order. Congrats for that amazing work of art. Thanks for the video tour. You guys have all the fun. Meanwhile, the rest of us will have to find reward, in pressing little flowers and leaves between the pages of free, fat, outdated, invalid catalogues of possible career choices. However, this truly gives joy as well, especially when periodically reviewing the avalanche of a collection. It's like family photos. OK, you and Sander get out there picking property plants to press and catalogue for the future of the fascinating Flock. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

Summer, what a wonderful tour and a wonderful tour guide. She is a true ambassador! What struck me most was learning just how fundamental the knowledge of plants once was in a person’s education. And sadly, how disconnected we have become from nature’s bounty.

Several things I love about Herbarium are 1. it's about collecting a lot of variety of plant species of a particular place and time (while things can disappear along with the habitat). It is a vital record. 2. It's about natural history! Not just words or pictures from a textbook but the real specimens collected, carefully handled by historical botanists. A touch of history! 3. Beautiful botanical illustrations and vintage cursive handwriting, these are art. 4. It's about science. The herbarium is necessary for TODAY science as well. Not only morphological study but the place for storing voucher specimens of the plant materials that have undergone molecular study!

I love good botanical illustration, that’s always my first choice for looking up-or just looking!-at plants, especially flowering ones. I think specimens in herbariums are really useful to see actual size, locations where collected, and other details. Good question! 🌱🌿just thought-any herbariums for cactus?! 🤣

From my experience, the specimens help to show variation in a species that drawings often lack. For instance, I work with hawaiian plants most of the time and we have a lot of variation within some species (i.e. Asplenium polyodon, Pipturus albidus, Metrosideros polymorpha, etc.)
