The body positivity take was SPOT ON.
I’m very similar to ZT in that I don’t have the “I do steroids” and or sub 15 percent body fat look. I’m also not PHAT (as in over 25 percent body fat either) I play rugby and lift religiously. I eat well. I have an AVERAGE athletic physique that I know is healthy.
As a personal trainer at a well known gym in AZ though I’m surrounded by vain and unrealistic gear heads that think ANYTHING less then a shredded 6 pack of abs physique is FAT.
This is a HUGE problem and I’m glad it was touched on.

It is all about mindset. A lot of people got into fitness because they were really skinny, or really fat. Unfortunately, even if they reach a point where they are ‘fit’, their brains tells them that they are STILL too skinny or too fat so they go to extremes. That is why that the fitness influencer space actually has some of the most unhealthy (eating disorder, overtraining, too much PED use) people out of all groups.

Well, I'd say you can have two sides to that coin. I definitely see far more cases of people considering 30% bf a normal/average physique just bc it is so, statistically speaking. Most people don't understand how little fat already makes you fat and (somewhat) unhealthy. I say that bc I have personally encountered a lot of cognitive dissonance concerning this, over the years.
At the same time, there's the overly critical side. I feel like this is just the pendulum swinging the other way. People in a counter belief system to the former, going well too far and into unhealthy ranges the other way. Although these, again, are more rare in my experience and usually direct that attitude only at themselves. But maybe it's a cultural thing (I'm German).

    • @bensonvong
      @bensonvong 6 місяців тому +4

@@MellonVegan yes, I have seen tons of people push back against BMI because ‘it doesn’t tell the whole story’. And while it is true that people who have tons of muscle can’t really use BMI as a gauge for health (BF is much better but also harder to check for). BMI still works for a majority of the population. When I see people who are 5’ 8” 230lbs who work a desk job who does zero exercise say ‘but BMI isn’t he be all and end all’, I just frown because it is just them not accepting that it isn’t healthy for them. Again, they shouldn’t be shamed but they also need to look after their health and make an effort to eat better and exercise more.

I think you're absolutely right about this subjective perception of whether someone is fat or not. Before switching to olympic lifting a few years ago, I did triathlon for quite some time, and let me tell you: people out of the endurance sport community have a completely different perception of the ideal body than people coming from strength sports. That was a big eye-opener for me, knowing people from both sport scenes. From the point of view of a lot of endurance athletes, basically every single strength athlete is fat. For most weightlifters, triathletes are just skinny and frail. That really showed me how our environment shapes our expectations of "the ideal body shape".

This is the reason I stopped caring for the gym/trying to get big and decided that I'll do calisthenics and just do cardio by biking around. I learned that many "huge" guys die prematurely or completely destroy their bodies, can't properly move, aren't flexible at all, and are just heavy and that's it.
Bikers, guys who do calisthenics, and any other form of activity are happier, fun, positive energy, skinny but very strong (stronger than gym bros), fast, agile, flexible and so on. Overall they look and "feel" more healthier than gym guys that look big and dmb.
I also see no point in getting jacked from a life standpoint, not even for girls as usually they don't care much about it (I've lived in many cities/countries and I know they care more about other stuff than your looks unless you have that lazy/very fat/unhealthy looks)

About the "exercise is 1.5 times more effective than drugs and/or therapy for depression" thing, I know for myself, this is 100% correct. My mom unalived herself 2 years ago and the Dr. said this to me. She really stressed that I MUST exercise for mental health so I listened. Let me be clear: I've never loved exercise. But it truly has helped me get out of the crippling depression that came after that devastating event. However, it took me medication to get enough energy to start exercising. Now I'm no longer depressed, don't go to therapy anymore, still on medication and can truly tell the difference in my general mental health if I don't exercise. If you're struggling, please try it. It doesn't have to be hard, just consistent.

Thank you for sharing and I'm sorry for your loss. My brother is 29 and has had chronic depression for the bigger part of his life, hospitalizations and all. None the less he was very fit and considered very handsome until a few years ago. He sees a therapist and that makes me happy, but when he said he went to the climbing gym last week, I genuinely nearly cried with how proud I was of him and how brave he was being, because I know that in his condition that's a huge effort. On the flip side, if he was a massive gym rat, using substances, obsessing over his diet and struggling with body dismorphia and THEN one day he would say he went to a therapist, I would also be proud of him and probably moved to tears. What we really need is to acknowledge the importance of taking care of both of them, and not assume one can thrive without the other.

I used to live in a dangerous part of town and one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in that part of town. I literally couldn’t walk around without being run up on. • @LodesDipper
      @LodesDipper 6 місяців тому +3

I agree, I LOVE walking and just being outdoors in general, problem is I live in a sketchy area. I would occasionally just walk outside for a few hours on a trail or just walk around my neighborhood but the last year or so has made doing those things feel very unsafe. Not only are there dangerous people and addicts on the streets but walking is not nearly as accessible anymore. I had to stop walking, and got a gym membership so I could do cardio there. I eventually bought an elliptical for my house so I could do cardio at home and have the gym be strictly for strength training. While there was an alternative in my case I sympathize with people who live in bad areas and have no alternatives.

The reason I was obese was because idgaf if I was alive or not
I was hopeless and miserable and felt like an absolute failure at every aspect of my life
I hated myself and felt inadequate in everything
60 hours a week in a horrible job and I still was living at home
I was working so hard to still just be a failure and the only thing that brought any comfort to me at that time was food
So I ate myself into gaining 150lbs in two years
I didn't want to be alive
I didn't need any shaming I already hated myself as much as I could
And only started to get better when I began to become hopeful that maybe I could do something with my life and actually are about the person I am instead of hating myself for not magically waking up one day as someone else
I wanted to be anyone else but me
I didn't ask to be born
But here I am stuck with this bullshit
So I might as well try to do some cool stuff before I die instead of just letting myself rot
I'll probably never own a home and can't even really make enough to afford my own place but I'm working towards getting a camper so I can travel the country and work seasonally
I still hate my life most days but I'm changing and healing because I'm spending more time with people, training and getting stronger so I have objective improvement that I can't twist into another thing tonhate myself over and I'm moving towards a future that's not just overtime purgatory just to afford the bare minimum
I still am indifferent if I die or not
But now it's towards wanting to be a Wildland Firefighter and maybe I'll die trying to save the wilderness instead of dying cause I was binge eating
Idek what I'm getting at anymore.
Obesity is a problem of mental health and what people do to cope. Not a problem of try harder cause you're a lazy bum and you suck.
No amount of shaming and hatred ever made anyone healthier. You need tough love, not tough shaming, not vitriol.
Shouting into the void here if anyone ever actually reads this far in the future maybe check in on me to see if I found something else to live for I'm gonna keep trying because I'll be damned if I let the devil win.

I was also obese and had this same mindset, it really is a psychological battle that you have to fight. My obesity came from me suppressing who I was and from having this same mindset. I am gay, but in my obese mindset I would’ve rather died from eating myself to death rather than tell anyone. When my mom passed away I was at rock bottom and decided to come out of the closet to people who were close to me and got a lot of support. 3) thinking about the value of this goal in relation to my actual values, not just ego or wanting to look better.

      5) respecting my past and current self despite his mistakes, and seeing my growth from this point not as finally shedding myself of weakness but just growing. You are jacked stacked and succulent, work hard, earn good money, have your own place and you reproduce with a beautiful young tradwife. Due to complications in the pregnancy she can't exercise as much as would normally be recommended. She gains a lot of weight and after having the baby she gets very poor and often interrupted sleep. She barely has tine to take a shower or eat a snack throughout the day. Only when you come home and take the baby can she make you your perfectly portioned meal with your macros counted. After she cleabs up you give her back the baby so you can work out. She obliges even though she's exhausted because she knows how important fitness is to you. Do you A. Shame her for being fat and not taking steps to lose weight. Or B. Sacrifice some time from your own work, training, sleep and eating so you can lessen the burden on her and be there for your family, or C. Divorce her and abandon your offspring because you, as a jacked and stacked alpha deserve a high value female and can't stand a run down overweight woman dragging you into the mire of mediocrity?

As someone who is coming up on 2 years clean of drugs and alcohol. My rehab preached “30 mins of cardio, 30 mins of cardio”.
I think exercise is crucial for good mental well being.
Now I also do struggle with binge eating, part of my addictive habits but it’s possible to still make healthier choices. I sympathize with heavier people and can relate to them as I went to rehab 6 feet 305 pounds but also I find society provides far too many excuses for negative behaviors that would cause people to be like I was. At the end of the day it’s hard…it’s hard to eat healthy, it’s hard to make short term sacrifices for long term gains, and that’s why most people don’t do it.

5 months ago, I ended up in the hospital for severe headaches and back pain and didn't have insurance at the time. When I came to work two days later, I was fired (without good reason). I had also experienced a severe traumatic event the week before. It took 2 months before I started getting unemployment (which is poverty wages btw). A month after that, my apartment building caught fire and I lost my apartment and a lot of my personal property. My life for the past few months has been a struggle, but I've made every effort to eat healthy and workout as much as reasonably possible. I've recovered physically, and being active has helped keep me mentally healthy as well. That said, I am also in therapy for PTSD and anxiety. The body and mind work in conjunction. Every day I'm able to workout and cook a healthy meal is a gift. I will never take my body or mind for granted. No matter how bad my circumstances, I still have control over my body and my mind, and it is empowering to use that control in a way that makes me look and feel great. I don't judge people for not taking the same path that I have, but I absolutely think everyone could benefit from the mindset of self-control and self-discipline when it comes to their physical health as well as their mental health. Unconditional acceptance is only a positive if you can also hold yourself accountable for your choices in life and their consequences.

And on the other side, the guy in green was so sweet and is trying. He admitted that he's working on getting better. I think he was great. And the guy in plaid was amazing as well. I think he's the ideal body type or 90% of women. He's not obese (in my opinion) and he's not 5% body fat (also not healthy). This was a good watch. I recommend everyone watch the original but try to tune out and not take Myron seriously. He's a joke

I can confirm that women are absolutely obsessed with Zac- the big dude. You just need to see his comment section and also the comments sections of guys like him. Most women i know aren't attracted to one specific body type but would usually go for a chunky guy over someone who is shredded. In my experience, women don't typically like d*ck skin levels of body fat. But maybe men are more attracted to shredded men and that's totally cool, we all like different things. If people want to know what women like they should ask women. Not a bunch of men.

    • @MihawkTopOne
      @MihawkTopOne 6 місяців тому +1

No, they should not ask women and you just proved why.
The women liked his behavior and mannerism, especially in contrast to the fit villain here. It also helps that he has a decent face. Most people know overly jacked guys aren't attractive, but that doesn't mean chubby guys are. You (also the women you're referring to) are being disingenuous and conflating their attraction to his personality to the fact that he's on the chubby side, and doing so while comparing him to the least attractive version of "fit" by far.
Go try to mislead somewhere else. There's a reason why chubby guys hardly get any play unless they're funny or extremely charismatic. Go ask the average chubby guy how many women approach him (which is rare, especially not attractive ones). That's how you know the reality. What women claim is irrelevant because the results reflect differently. All the lonely chubby guys who can hardly pull girls know what the reality is and they're the only ones with actual credibility because, despite all the claims women make, they actually experience what women do or don't do.

It's sad that Lizzo is the main catalyst for arguments these anti-body-positivity people use. The body-positivity crowd shouldn't have to defend her. She isn't promoting body-positivity, she's promoting an unhealthy lifestyle, it's different. I remember in high school I knew girls who would see these "body inspo" posts on tumblr that were of literal anorexic women, and talk about how they wanted to look like them. It's the exact same kind of post as Lizzo is making, but on the opposite side of the spectrum. It's not body positivity, it's just disordered eating glorification.
There are plenty of fat (and skinny) people online making actual body-positivity content that do it gracefully, and they do it by encouraging healthy habits, accepting the normal body changes that will happen throughout your life, and not hating yourself along the way. that's all it's actually about.

I’m fat. The thing that some hardliners don’t get is that not being fat has different difficulties for different people. That can be due to genetics or psychology. When you look at ozempic, this should be obvious. I weighted over 300 before going on anti-depressants, and weigh over 300 now after anti-depressants. I got down to around 240 while I was on them… it should be obvious that body chemistry and psychology affect how easy it is to lose weight. I am lazy, pathetic, and can't figure out how to want weightloss enough to make it happen... but "lazy" only has meaning relative to difficulty. No one has every been called too lazy to play videogames or watch youtube.
It is okay to say that fat is “unacceptable”, but that requires you believe that no cost is too great to avoid being fat. Maybe that is a valid belief, but I think it seems extreme.
Weightloss is simple and hard. No one has figured out a non-pharmaceutical or non-surgical way to make it not hard.
Let’s imagine a squat max as an example. Most men will squat 100 pounds on day 1. 225 within a few weeks. 315 within a year or two… and most men don’t get to 405…. Somewhere in the low 300’s most men give up because it gets too hard, even though all intact men are capable of 405 after some training. They hit the point where they can’t figure out how to want a 405 more than the cost of getting it(which is consistency and some discomfort). To me “fat is unacceptable” feels like “squatting less than 405 is unacceptable”. For some people, losing weight is harder than squatting 405.
Being fat is still “your fault” but differences in difficulty is never addressed on a basic level. I will never claim that be fat is attractive, heathy, or good in any way. I am not claiming that it is not an addiction. But the point of addictions is that they are extremely challenging to get rid of. U seem super smart but I can see you putting effort into making excuses for why you can't and why it's hard. Who's saying it's easy? Easy is junk food and lounging to much. Staying healthy long term is work. Losing lots of excess body fat is hard. Just realize in the end no one cares do what you want. But intelligent excuses for not hitting personal goals are still just excuses. Embrace accountability and really look at your relationship with food. Best wishes friend.

@@babyreps365 I’m probably going to squat 405 next month. I’m 15 pounds down since february(which is not much but it’s a start). I’m working on reducing food variety and increasing food quality. Im adding cardio 5x per week. I’m working on it.
I stand by what I said. A lot of people ignore or deny the difficulty aspect or treat it in a way that doesn’t make sense.

@@suburiboy Doing excessive cardio like that will just increase your appetite to the point you might be eating above your maintenance calories. Walking 5k-10k steps a day is more than sufficient for a very overweight guy like you. Combined with consistent weightlifting and eating on a 100-300 calorie deficit, diet breaks aka eating maintenance calories for 1 week every 1-2 months or so of dieting there's no way you're not losing a significant amount of body fat after a year.

I think body positivity should be viewed separately from your value as a person. Your body is a vessel. It isn't what your moral compass is or the words you say to people. Your personality and morals is where your value as a human is. Value yourself as a human and have the respect for your body to make healthy choices. Accept your body in this moment but respect it to want to do better for it.

on the topic of body positivity i have found it essential to be able to navigate fitness and fitness circles. due to instant access of the internet where mostly the cream of the crop rise up, its pushed not only our body standard but strength standards as well to ludicrous levels. The fact is many people do not have the genetics or circumstances to do what they see online. Then because you could not reach these said metrics in x amount of time, it because you dont work hard enough, or youre lazy, etc.. That leads not only to insecurity but also leads to people either quitting, or pushing harder when they are already doing TOO MUCH. if they continue they develop chronic injuries, which then becomes an acute one, kind of like a crack in glass, getting worse and worse over time until it shatters. I say this because this happened to me, it took me 5 years to hit the 2,3,4 plates, where people could hit those in 6 months doing a basic 5x5. leading up to that i had chronic shoulder pain getting worse and worse over the course of 3 years, to where i would get intense pain if i got my hand to the the height of my shoulder or higher. luckily i listened to my body and have been seeing a physio for years, learned i had very little scapular function in my left shoulder and was compensating for years. today i can lift weights, but i cannot push past an rpe of 7 on compounds or else i might risk a serious muscle strain. Learning to be comfortable and accepting that i wont be able to lift how i want, or even look how i want, was the heathiest thing i could have done. i might be a dyel forever, and never make another PR, but at the end of the day im in a lot less pain, and happier in my own body, i have decent abs, a poppy chest, nicely shaped glutes, decent forearms, and surprisingly wide shoulders, and thickish neck and traps from training combat sports. im 5'11" 170ish and decently lean, while nothing extraordinary i can take pride in what i have been able to build.
