True story... Raced a 3.9 V6 Monte Carlo vs an older 3.8 s/c Monte. Gapped em by a door, both autos, from a dig. Later on that same night, rolled raced a Probe GT 5speed. It gapped me by a little more than a car. Rolled 3 other times and even a dig at a stop light. I even tried to tree it or run a little sooner to try and get an edge. Never got close to that Mazda V-6. Popped the hood and just saw a S.R.I. didn't even tune it . eventhough my Monte was stock I was taking out a lot of Hondas, Mustangs, Miatas, and Eclipses. If I ever get a chance to buy a cheap one with low miles, I'll sell my car and daily that instead.

Slightly late to the comment party. But I bought a 67 Firebird as my first car, and Bladed is completely right. I jumped in over my head, as my immediate family is not a long line of mechanics and drag racers from days of old. I have family members that were into cars when they were my age, but again not mechanics. So I jumped right in and got a classic, and immediately found myself in trouble when the engine spun a bearing 3 months after buying it. The best advice I can provide is to be prepared for the unexpected, and have a back up plan unlike I did. Luckily I was able to borrow a car to get through the months it took me to save up and get a new engine (built Pontiac 400), and I learned a whole lot on the way, but if I were to do it again I'd have definitely handled certain things differently. I love my car, and I wouldn't call it my nightmare car, but it was definitely close.
My first was a 2003 fiat stilo 1.9 diesel, hatchback of course and what i liked about it was that being yellow it stood out since in europe most cars have much more boring colors and i also liked the fact that i managed to learn a lot on it since i wasn't worried about something happening to it(it's still fine).
I feel this. I started with a 2011 Camry. So basically the most basic car you can get. I learned in that car and also learned about engines and maintenance. I eventually recked it but just the feeling of driving was the perfect intro to cars I wanted. So if your looking for a car. Listen to this advice. If you truly love driving then it won’t matter the car.
Honestly I started with a statesman and I had very quickly realised I didn’t know enough about it to do anything, here in aus the CE 2 door lancer was my next choice (yes the ce mirage series you have over there are specified differently here the coupe sedan is the lancer and the coupe hatch is the mirage) and the lancer was a huge help I had learnt so much that it had actually ended up in my getting my FTO (which I blew up and am trying to fix) so naturally I bought a blown CE mirage and because of the knowledge I gained from the lancer it allowed me and a mate to just swap the engine out entirely and I’m forever thankful. I can’t agree more START WITH SMOL!!!!
I'm still using my mother's cars since I have my license for barely a month. My father and I have the same interests and told me a lot of what you said: What I should aim for my first car is something that is reliable if properly maintained, money and insurance friendly and simple. I plan to be a mechanic, so maintenance shouldn't be a big issue. I'm currently saving to buy a Peugeot 106 first gen 3 doors. (Yep, I'm a frenchie) They're cheap, simple to maintain, pretty reliable and look pretty nice imo.
who needs a sports car when you can get a mazda3??? all seriousness tho it’s a fun little car for daily driving and with a stick it’s fun as hell edit: for a 16 year old
ok but, i can't drive because of some things: I'm turning 16 but in my country we can only drive at 18, I'm kinda tall for a Miata, and idek if we have mazda in my country *sad teenage noises*
I have a 2005 Volvo s40 as my first car. I'm 22. It's not the most enthusiastic car. But it has a satisfying sounding 5 cylinder, sporty feeling manual gearbox (at least when comparing it to my friends little city cars ive driven), enough space for all my friends, good safety rating, and enough power to feel a kick into your seat. All that for a car that's going for less than a quarter of a new Renault Kwid here in South Africa.
I liked the Corvette with eyebrows. Here in Romania, back in the days, the best first car was the Dacia 1300 because it was simple, it had all you need, it broke easy but it was easy to repair and that really made good drivers because it made you understand what a car is, how it behaves before it breaks, what to do to not break it, but now, 18 year old boys jump in E46's brought from Germany that probably went trough 3 or 4 accidents and the newbees hit the first tree they get in they're way.
As a 66 year-old who has learned from life experiences and the wisdom of others, unless money is no issue, NEVER buy a new car. Buy one 2 to 3 years old with low mileage and maintenance records.
Tech Explained: You were lucky, I learned this lesson the hard way in my late 20’s. When I was growing up, it wasn’t until the 70’s when carmakers stopped drastically altering exterior designs every year. Before then, a one-year old car could look “dated”...lol. After years of owning Honda’s and Acuras, in 2017 I bought a 2014 Impala LTZ (the great redesign). I have 46k on it and maintain it well. Other than badging, you cannot tell it apart from a 2020 model. Cheers!
The car looks so fun. I'd love to own one myself but probably I'd use it as a drift car project cause it doesn't look too practical. Not enough money for two cars though and no place to legally drift for a cheap price.
I was conflicted on whether to first get a Prius or import a Scirocco, but after seeing this, I probably should go with the Prius. Ptetty reliable car with a high MPG. Thanks Mr. Angel
My first car was a 1985 Chevy suburban perfect first car cause it get you good at driving it’s very simple and easy to work on and it’s a box body Chevy so it can put you in a very good part of the car community
My first vehicle was a 1998 Chevy c1500, It had a 350 and 230k miles when I got it and it was rust free, I got it for $500 after saving up from mowing lawns and I loved it. Unfortunately it blew up after a little under a year, because I couldn’t afford to fix the cracked radiator after a metal rod fell off the back of a scrapper truck and smacked it, it eventually overheated because the temp gauge didn’t work and I forgot to add coolant that morning. It had 232k miles when it blew up and I was actually on the 30 minute drive from my moms house to my dads house/farm where the new radiator I saved up for got delivered when it blew up, i was heartbroken at the time but it was a blessing in disguise because it motivated me to get an actual decent paying job at a factory, and is probably the only I have my 08 mustang and clean manual 95 f150. Also I still have the chevy have the truck Chevy and have swapped in a 4BT Cummins and in NV 4500 manual trans and 4x4 converted it.
I'll definitely recommend my first car: a 2010 Audi A5 Sportback 2.0 TDI Quattro, not too fast; not to slow, it got all the stuff you'll find on most modern cars (automatic start/stop, parking sensors, LOTS of airbags) it is reliable and (mostly) affordable Drive save y'all :)
My first car was a stock 1986 Trans Am and I still own it, they’re not the most reliable car on earth, and parts are hard to come by where I live, but I hardly ever have to work on mine. Hell it sat in a barn for 6 years with the battery hooked up and it still had a charge/started with no problems; I have no explanation for that to this day😂
Saw an S14 with an RB25DETT, tunes to have 519 HP, and it was about $3,000 and in my area. I watched it and it got bought by someone. SAW IT FREAKING DRIVE PAST US ON OUR ROADS
This was the best. I wanted the Ford Focus RS, but I went after the Ford Fiesta ST because of price. I think this was the best car list ever. Lol. The ending made me laugh.
Aight well I feel like my first car choice is pretty solid then (a Nissan Altima 3.5 se from 2003) it's got good horsepower and enough reliability to be good even in today's standards, along with 23mpg that's pretty decent, would definitely recommend it to others
Just got my first car. a 4th Generation Nissan Sentra 1.6L Automatic. There was crash damage to the front passenger side door and fender so i got it for a steal. Had a guy reweld it, remove any rust we found and spray it a nice slightly sparkly silver(not sure bout the proper name). Dad insisted and got the rear fin and side skirts for it and got me some glossy rims to compliment the silver, may change it at some point but digging it rn. Though I have some issues to tackle before its 100%. The car pulls left, even though the wheels are aligned so i think there may be control arm or other steering connected item issue. The car idles in neutral at 1800RPM which is bad for gas mileage, and the passenger side doors were refitted incorrectly destroying the fron tpassenger inner panel and also making the back door scrape the front when it opens. Slowly but surely getting the service parts ready for a full service and tune and then getting the suspension and steering and contorl checked. hopefully by the end of the eyar its 100% and I can finally start looking at what I wann do to the car.
IsDatTomatoJuice only the gtt? Cultured, but I’d imagine I’d have quirks being an old car but other than that I think it would be a pretty good starter
On top of the points you put out which are great. The term stupid simple is one I’d like to add. think of a first car you’re learning to work on that you can fix with simple tools! on the side of the road if necessary. my first car was a 99 ford ranger with a 5 speed trans 2wd. Can’t get much simpler than that and it taught me abt all the basics to work on any car. saved me a ton of money in the long run and now im able to afford another car and a motorcycle. still daily the ranger tho! Cant beat stupid simple

Could do a lot worse than an MX-6, I say explore those, find one that runs great and enjoy. Especially if it's a V-6
You guys get money from parents to buy a car ?
My parents won't even let me get a coupe due to insurance costs
I’ve had loads of cars in my mind for first cars.. but once i really had a think.. i think the miata is the perfect choice for me :)

*You're breathtaking!*

(Yep, I'm a frenchie)
They're cheap, simple to maintain, pretty reliable and look pretty nice imo.
who needs a sports car when you can get a mazda3??? all seriousness tho it’s a fun little car for daily driving and with a stick it’s fun as hell
edit: for a 16 year old
I know that feeling, just about any lighter weight car with decent power and a stick will feel that way.
Yup. I've got a Focus that uses the same platform. Love the thing to death

Well this brings me back to the days of GradeA. Good work Bladed :)
Now, everytime I see a Zed-o-six on the street, I will imagine thick MS Paint eyebrows seemingly questioning the purpose of their existence.
zee-oh-six sounds way cooler.
I would recomend a mustang or a big sedan, like a cadillac, lincoln or even jaguar. But the best tips for a first car is to buy a used car.

Cheers!

In Malaysia there's a brand called Perodua sell brand new car that's called Axia like between RM20000 or $5000 for dollars.
First car was an Escape for the snow, just recently bought an SI cause I wanted to learn manual.

On top of the points you put out which are great.
