      While I’ve got your attention, Bro, you really got to check out LPD Pedal’s Eighty7 JCM800/ Hot Rod Plexi stomp box; it ‘bubbles’ like a real JCM800, has that ‘phantom bass response’ & is so very close to the real thing, it even reminds me of the things I’ve always hated about JCM800 100w Back-Breaker Boxes! 😆👍

    I still maintain that the Marshall JCM 800 (with the right distortion pedal) is the undisputed King metal amp...and I've had 'em all. Bogner, Super Kraken, Boogies, modeling amps, rack stuff etc. Don't get me wrong. Many of the aforementioned amps are great, however If you're searching for a straight-forward METAL sound at a NON-boutique price, you cannot go wrong with the JCM 800 100 watt boosted with the right pedal. The rest is up to you.

    I had one of these badboys in the early nineties. Slightly modded to give a little more front end oversteer. It still had to be played pretty loud to get some decent tone. Playing loud wasn't a real problem in those days anyway. Always a nice little open spot in front of the podium where the amp was!! :-) It was a vicious beast and the best sounding metal amp I ever owned. I sold it to switch to all 19 inch rack amps. That was "the thing" in those days!

    I bought my JCM800 2203 reissue a few months ago. It wasn’t my first choice as I prefer a smoother tone like dual rec or a vh4 and always found the sound of the 800 a bit too bright and harsh. There was a crazy good deal and I just took a gamble. I immediately had buyers regret while it was still in the box but once I plugged it in ….. wow what a beast. And also some warm clean tones with the volume knob pulled back and on the neck. BUT, its very bright, and I have an SD-1 with the drive and level on full to get a good amount of gain. I can’t play it above about 2 on the master and at that level the treble is ripping my face off and really hurting my ears. The pre-amp if its above 7 seems to also make the sound messy and harsh (ice pick). I read others say that the brightness goes away once the amp master volume is above about 3, so perhaps I just need to attenuate it to get a better tone. Those comments are perhaps a little extreme because I do really like the amp and the more I play it the more I connect with it, its amazing how it reacts to your hands and its made me a much better player. It’s not an amp for a soft touch but that’s what a like about it, it rewards confidence and dynamics in playing. Any tips on smoothing the harshness?

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  5 місяців тому +1

      Pre amp to 10. SD-1: level almost max, drive barely open, tone a bit over noon. Master past 3 💪. Tone stack according to taste. I like Marshall Vintage or Celestion V30 speakers the most with 800.
      And yes 800 2203 is very in your face and might sound bright but in the context of a full band / mix it cuts through like a knife.
      Here’s a video I did about the re-issue: ua-cam.com/video/LIn5YuDsuwI/v-deo.htmlsi=Lnr5U0C_fOsjN1AF

    It was Sweetwater. TheJvm410 is built on the JCM 800 2203 circuit design. That is why that one channel nearly twins the 2203. Also the 2555 is based on the 2203 circuit design for sure... but no cigar. I ordered the 2555 it is diverse from other Marshalls to a point that I think it slightly doesn't sound like a full blooded Marshall.

Although I love your style - you definitely have more than one flavor but of course I love your Zakk tributes. Like you, i love my sd1 and Marshall 2203 with 6550 tubes. Was thinking of loading a Marshall cabinet with ev12L 16ohm - put on top ( like Eddie ) and either v30 or t75 on bottom for early 80s Zakk tone ( pride n glory and prior ) and then a 2x12 semi open back with ev12 8ohm run by a jose modded jcm 800 with el34 so I can use the chorus ( wide ) pedal for that big sound. Possibly another 4x12.wanted to get your thoughts.

      Cool! Crank the bass & preamp, master enough so that the amp wakes up and produces a bit of power tube saturation (this totally depends about the ”individual” amp - one of my 800 this is 6, on one it’s 3 and with this one it’s 2 - it’s off (0) or full blast (3) with this one 😎. Treble around 5-6 and presence I keep usually somewhere between 5-7 depending how much bite I want to have.
      My advice is don’t look at the knobs but just use your ears to find the sweet spots ’cos every amp (especially 800s) are different. I dial any amp like this: ua-cam.com/video/vCxlsdErftk/v-deo.html
      And boost the amp with OD. My favourite is BOSS SD-1 👌.

Although there are many different high gain amps out there where the differences may seem subtle to the external ear, but the HINTS and nuances can definately affect the creativity in music, I hear a vintage MARSHALL and think to myself , "Where DID that sound go??????" Meaning the end of the 1980s we lose something, even though the relevant Rectifier and 5150 tones saved the day for heavy music in the 1990s but the classic JCM 800 is thee holy grail and there's no substitute!!!! Great video Euge.

    Hi Euge, great riffs there! :) I was surprised with your settings of the amp, especially with the master volume on 1, which is unussual to me. Such low settings do not overdrive that much the power tubes and in comparison to master volume around 7, which is more common for this amp as well as for plexi (same power section), it sounds normally thin. That's probably why you put bass above 9 to compensate it. I'm curious what was the reason of such low master volume settings? Was it because of the sound or due to some other reasons? I recently came across a problem with this amp and a reactive load and you gave me a hint how to solve it. Thank you by the way! :) Let me explain. I've built a clone of a 1959 plexi with a passive effects loop (the return jack is directly connected to the power section) and i've also built an external jcm800 preamp, which i sometimes plug in to the plexi power section giving me the 2203 amp of it. Then the amp is connected to Fryette PS-100 (reactive load & power amp) and to two 4x12 cabs. My problem was a high-pitched squeal, when I pushed the master volume of the "2203" (around 6-7) and boosted it (sd-1 or microamp or mxr eq). I noticed, that it was dependent on the proximity of guitar pickups to the reactive load. I've seen this video, your MV on 1 with a huge sound, so I gave it a try and my problem dissapeared. There's no more squeal, even if i'm very close to the reactive load. It seems like the more you push the amp, the stronger electro-magnetic field is generated around the attenuator and at some point and distance it goes to a squealing high pitched feedback through pickups and cabs. I'm curious whether you faced the same problem and that's why you do not push the power section such far, because you have also a 100W tube amp connected into a reactive attenuator and you stand very close to it. Sorry for such a long post. Cheers!

    This amp sounds like a true dream amp! The desire to buy one is growing fast...is it possible to also use this amp at a lower volume at home? Or does it only have two modes: "leave it off" or "blow your windows out"? Would love to hear from you! Really like your content! 🤘

      It does!
      It’s like with tube amps in general: they sound like sh*#t on low volumes master turned low but luckily nowadays the reactive loads & attenuators allow us to play just with headphones, if needed, and crank the master to get that full power tube crunch 💪.
      So yeah three modes: nothing at all, loud & extremely loud 😎.
      Thanks! Really glad to hear that! 🙏

    Hi Sir, a question from a newbie. How do you boost the volume from riffs to solo in a live show withe these single channel amps? A boost in front only changes the tone but not much of volume right?

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  Рік тому

      Our FOH takes care of that 👌. Yeah a boost in front just pushes the preamp tubes harder = more gain but not volume. A boost in the fx loop (which these old ones doesn’t have) boosts the volume ’cos it’s after preamp section but before power amp 👌.

    I own 2 of them too... I love em even with pedalboards in front on the low input.
    I have owned many High gain amps (from Peavey to Mesa)... But a jcm800 with a SD1 in front, IT'S THE TONE ! Can't go wrong and you will ALWAYS cut through the mix.

    I have a 800 2203 1982 (vertical and not modded except metropoulos fx loop). It is almost the same with this one (I guess all 800s have differences) but I simply cannot get the tone on 5:33 and onwards. This is exactly the tone/gain I am struggling years to achieve from this amp and this is why it stays in the shelf while I have been playing with many other amps even handwired custom made. Note that I am using passive pickups but I do not think this is my problem!
    Any ides what I am doing wrong?

    Hey man. I have a 1983 2203, from what I can hear your amp might have been modded, because it has a lot more pre amp gain than mine. It sounds awesome. I usually set my preamp knob at 9 and it doesn't have all that gain just by itself.

  • @AlexRamosDrTaz
    @AlexRamosDrTaz 3 роки тому

    Awesome! If you max the amp gain, scoop the mids a little and put the SD-1 gain at 9-10 o clock, it's pretty much in the thrash/early death metal tone ball park.
