Would love to think that young bass players are listening to bebop and the jazz monsters who played it as well as the ones who still do. Nice lesson. Thanks!
Just been thinking about this all week, after listening to over 400 songs recorded from 1960 to 1990, in the last 4 weeks, by several of this greats. Going to share the catalog with the younger Cats.
Bird licks on bass can sound a bit like Paul Chambers. Which is no surprise as Bird literally invented the Bebop vocabulary. Great job on the lesson, thanks.
Totally G! Paul C , and other monsters of the upright on those Blue Note and Columba & Prestige albums,- like Jymie Merrit and Reggie Workman too..Even though I am way more an electric player, those guys are a serious inspiration...
Alas, a teacher that gets right into the "meat & potatoes" of the lesson without all the, well,......fluff. Mr. Philpot, I have certainly heard of you and your work, but this would be the first lesson that I have seen you give. Nonetheless, a clever way to expand our musical vocabulary and creativity by or through inspiration of another musicians art. Creation through dissecting and analyzing. Thank you, sir, for the lesson. I will be looking for more.
Thanks Tom-also, possibly of interest, I have been posting some super mini lessons on my Instagram too-60 seconds and under-Very little fluff and a lot of info in a short time, -there's some more bebop, whole tone, chromatic concepts, etc....I'm at @rufusbass on Instagram... Cheers, Rufus www.rufusphilpot.com
Fantastic info and lesson!!!! I love your sound - can you tell pls what is the bass/strings/gear etc. I am “trying” to reproduce that sound but.....mannnn

Jazz bass. Sounds like the bridge volume is rolled off with much of the tone pot rolled off as well. It's the "pretend it's a P bass" EQ...
The tools he talks about are efficient in jazz in general
Good stuff 👊🏿
Try doing the lick slowly first then gradually increase speed, its annoying when u do it too fast, we all know u can play fast
Great stuff thanks Rufus....
Good info, from a good teacher.
