It's always interesting to me seeing people's competitive journeys, be it in a single event or a whole grind. But this just goes to show how IMPORTANT having a good mental is I always try to remind people that at the end of the day, you're doing this because you enjoy it. Amazingly made video as always I am very experienced with the stresses of competitive specially when I was put into a very lofty position (though admittedly, definitely self-inflicted!). Hell, I "retired" TWICE just because I couldn't really handle it and even now I haven't been able to make a full comeback to puyo in general, nevermind competitively. Hell I can't even remember the last tournament I played, maybe Celtic Throwdown 2020? (Not counting regional crew battles I've done after that). I found that I, personally, couldn't really push any game competitively since my poor mental game would suck away all the fun I would have with it. But that bit for "having fun" I've realised as well, when I played some small sets with other players or even jumped into puzzle league (if you ever find anyone there), I had fun! I still enjoy this game, but I can't bring myself to play competitively again Also, a very late welcome to the "defeating Syn" club :PPPPP
Watching that Syn match was something else. I was completely entranced by both of your performances. Syn is such a formidable opponent and you were able to do it so well, both of you played amazingly. And considering how long ago this was I know you both have improved so much since then. I hope there's more opportunities for puyo events in the future... It's always so fun to watch and play
Yo what an insane and amazing video Schoell! I knew that time in that first match that something was wrong. First I thought it was just internet or controller issues, but after that video, it became clear. I can really emphasize with the mental situation you faced. I experienced it in the Tetris league. Especially against Patzi, one of my biggest rivals. When it was 14-12 or smth like that and I was at the verge to win this game, I suddenly just shook and missdropped a bunch of pieces, but still expecting to win. I was upset and asked myself: Whats up with me? Just calm down, play and enjoy. Then it got better. I think the inner self was like (also subconsciously): if you win NOW you prove to other that youre good at this game, so you HAVE to win, you MUST. Prove that youre worthy for the game! And that was the moment I felt the pressure from myself. But luckily I could calm down a bit. Im glad that your mental problems in swapdown got better and that you got to take the win there! Congratulations again! This is a video I could just recommend everyone who faces mental issues in competitions! I hope we can remember that even if it is a conpetition, just to have fun playing the game with other people. Funnily enough this applies to me right now, I am going to CTEC and compete there so I hope I remember this video! Great work Schoell buddy! (Also the edits and graphics were top notch!👌)
Hey thank you so much Shu! Regarding the match we played in the event, I honestly think it was a combination of all 3 you mentioned or something. There were moments in the match where I could see a way out to get me back into the game, only to be met with the game feeling suddenly very stiff, then my mentality back then deteriorating causing me to play worse and worse leading to more misdrops, that sort of vicious cycle. There was actually a segment which I cut from the script for largely pacing reasons: "In all fairness to Shuichi, he’s a highly capable player that pretty much deserved the win, and in any other circumstance, I would have been fine to take the loss from him… it’s just… I shouldn’t have made those misdrops, I shouldn’t have made those mistakes, I just shouldn’t have… [Deep Breaths]". The point I wanted to make there was that I would have been fine losing to you at that moment, just that I felt my poor performance through one reason or another shouldn't have happened, causing me to really doubt myself. I was fine losing that, just the way in which it happened I wasn't so fine with. Heck even in Tetris League when I lost to you there, I wasn't upset, I had fun I thought I played fine enough, and we played a Puyo set immediately afterwards and all in all it was a good time! You're pretty much right on the money when it comes to the mental pressure you can apply to yourself. Having a high expectation of yourself to perform well and then ultimately get frustrated or upset when things "shouldn't" be happening but they are, and that you have to prove yourself otherwise. Something that honestly still applies to myself even now and I imagine it does for many others. In any case, really nice to hear from you Shu here, glad you got something out of it and good luck in CTEC! Knock 'em dead man!
Sus wap down edit: oh god me and ren are commentating in this video I hope I don't embarass myself to schoell's subs o_o 2nd edit: yooo what a real one showing the footage of me 16 chaining you, respectfully of course 3rd edit: Schoell is going swapy guy mode o_o what a menace! good video schoell, impressed you've been able to crank out another high quality video in a short time frame, just what you'd expect from a seasoned video editor
This was an incredably climatic video! That last match just kept me on the edge of my seat. Thanks for an excellent video with such an amazing arc! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I can feel the struggles of doubting yourself with every mistake you make. I do that every day, and honeslty, I should take your word for just having fun. Also, congrats on winning, Swap Guy.
"I was too caught up in trying to be the best that I forgot to have fun..." I'm pretty sure Marle herself was speaking to you during those practice matches...
Always take your losses as a chance to work on. Regardless of your skill or knowledge on the game. Should you continue fighting on you can over come it. Congrats Schoell the preliminary wasn’t the best but you truly held on and even overcame a giant wall.
Swap Guy strikes again!! That was so freaking good! Hell, I felt incredibly nervous sometimes while watching, as if I was the one playing. I was at the edge of my seat! 28:50 - That sync of the chain with the music tho! That was sick!
I'm supposed to be getting ready for bed for a big thing tomorrow but everything goes out the window when a Schoell upload comes out ; P That was an incredible video, what an amazing set of events. It really is easy just to see a winner and think "they did well", it was deeply enlightening to watch your mental process throughout. Your editing was stellar and truly helped convey the epic story. I think you deserve to call yourself a storyteller if you haven't already! I knew I was sorely missing commentary during the preliminaries, was super glad to have it during the semi and finals. As I watched, I was thinking about how niche this little game was in the span of big sporting events like AFL (Aussie here) and Soccer, and how much the commentary sounded just like it came straight out of those events, so when BlueHairKei said "This is just like Wimbledon!" after the volley, I absolutely agreed! It's wonderful to see games like this given the amazing enthusiasm and commentary it deserves. Well done to everyone who participated in the tournament, I was so happy to feel like I was really 'there' at a 2 year old event.
this probably is the best video about some kind of tournament, and I'm not even talking about puyo pyuo tetris specifically. Most of the videos like these are just clips of the tournament, but you managed to touch other subject too, like mental health in competition.
Haha, high praise! Most tournament runs I've seen (largely from like Smash) are basically just what you describe, just stream highlights and clips or what have you, though for a lot of competitive players that also double as content creators, it's just another event and probably don't see a good reason to deep dive into their tournament runs. If I were to give like a huge inspiration for my style of tourney run videos... it'd probably be like WolfeyVGC's tournament run videos, informative, gives good play by plays and everything like that.
Damn, this was genuinely intense! Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Amazing how the concept of having fun would boost morale enough to win :)
Alternative Title: Schoell Has Impostor Syndrome Arc Again, I really need to watch/analyze your videos more so I can get better at Puyo and Tetris. Thanks for the GTR short btw (* ̄∇ ̄)ノ
I absolutely love these kinds of videos!! ^^ The way you edit them, how I even become super anxious for you with how intense these games can get. 44 minutes is quite long but I was so observed by it that I just had to see it all to the end! Really awesome that you ended up winning! Against someone you've always lost to, which some may call a bracket demon. Watching this really motivates me to want to learn puyo puyo and tetris at a high level, or at least master a lot of great techniques someday. Very entertaining stuff overall (also I'm the 69th commenter nice lol)

DON'T LET THEIR LOVE FOR YOU BE WASTED!!! draco: the love... lidelle: between us?
Schoell, I didn't know you were still active... I'm a big fan, got the game 'cause of your videos. Any recommendations for how I should learn the game?
Aw that's really nice to hear! Always been here, I just take 2 billion decades to make anything haha. As for learning the game well for PPT you're essentially learning 2 different games and a unique mode in Swap so I'll try to break it down in segments: For Puyo I recommend searching up the website "puyo.guide". It gives you a step by step guide on what you should be learning in Puyo starting out. It's a lesson plan. The best resource there would be a video by Hernan about the concept of making chains, which imo is the best resource to learning how to make chains in Puyo (at least in the west) to date. Otherwise once you got basic chaining done, maybe try taking a look at more structured forms and patterns, like GTR (some say my video on the form is pretty good for learning it c: ), Stairs, Sandwich, but learn it at your own pace. You should be having fun with it at the end of the day, it's not a test you need to cram for. For Tetris, try looking into T-Spins. If you search up something like "Garbo's T-Spin Guide" or something along those lines you should find a very good video for learning them. Also maybe look into openers as well. I'd recommend TKI as a good starting point, but again learn what you want to and take it at your own pace. For Swap, resources on that are limited to basically the official SEGA tutorial on it. It overs the basics and what you can do in the mode, but it doesn't really go in depth into strategies you can do that's unique to the mode, something which I may be interested to do myself in the future. Overall though, just play the game, take your time and have fun with it. That's the main thing, you'll get better and more used to the things you practise over time.

You had the same problem when I first played ppt and that’s trouble shooting. Your mental state at the beginning was off at first but when your doubts came in you had a luck counter and I experienced it before when I play offline playing against characters with hard ai. A luck counter is a mental way of getting back into the game. Your mind is set to be smart mode and you play well at the end.
Okay I knew I had to watch the whole vid b4 comenting again, Omori must have hit you hard for you to go out of your way to get that Calm Down scene done heheh This was exciting and tense all the way through, but I can't muster up anything proper, you simply always know how to make the most out of everything for your vids, it was a fun and tense ride Common Schoell W
Thank you haha! Omori was a dang good time, although it wasn't necessarily my intention to incorporate anything from it when I first wrote up the script for this. It was like: - I wrote up the first draft of the script and then edited the draft a bit - I play Omori - I record my lines - Notice that I already have a bit where I try to calm myself down and I was struggling to come up with an interesting visual other than soley relying on vignettes, greyscales and other effects to get the point across. - I thought the original animation looked really cool - I tried animating something myself for the first time - It got added in.
Yeah... There was a cut moment in here for pacing reasons (yes pacing in an almost 45 minute YT video xP) about me trying to explain that normally I would be fine to accept a loss from Shuichi, just in the way that I let myself down... it really took a toll on my current competitive mental at the time. Shu's great! We played in Tetris League 2 in the top bracket together and I ended up losing to him, but we both played pretty alright and there was no harm done, so much so that we basically just played some Puyo together immediately afterwards and it was all in good fun. He was really good at the mode at that time, and I do respect him a lot as a player.
Honestly, this is a really good explanation of how it feels to mess up at something you’ve put a lot of time into. You just get this insane feeling that you aren’t good enough, even though you’ve tried so hard. remember kids(AND YOU SCHOELL) your best is always enough. 🩵

There was actually a segment which I cut from the script for largely pacing reasons:
"In all fairness to Shuichi, he’s a highly capable player that pretty much deserved the win, and in any other circumstance, I would have been fine to take the loss from him…
it’s just…
I shouldn’t have made those misdrops, I shouldn’t have made those mistakes, I just shouldn’t have…
[Deep Breaths]".
Sus wap down
edit: oh god me and ren are commentating in this video I hope I don't embarass myself to schoell's subs o_o
2nd edit: yooo what a real one showing the footage of me 16 chaining you, respectfully of course
3rd edit: Schoell is going swapy guy mode o_o what a menace!
good video schoell, impressed you've been able to crank out another high quality video in a short time frame, just what you'd expect from a seasoned video editor
yo the omori reference goes hard. Absolutely beautiful editing
This was an incredably climatic video! That last match just kept me on the edge of my seat. Thanks for an excellent video with such an amazing arc! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow I really felt that, I am proud you over came that feeling 2 years ago way to go Sch0el.
Your editing is so good, I love these tournament run videos they're always so gripping.
I was so happy wheb you won against Syn. I'm impatient to play with you again!
I feel like I'm watching a climactic action anime and I'm here for it
i would never doubt swap guy 😊
Klug figting himself in the finals is super fitting for this tournament run storyline LOL
swap guy but ace attorney?!?!!!!!
I can feel the struggles of doubting yourself with every mistake you make. I do that every day, and honeslty, I should take your word for just having fun.
Also, congrats on winning, Swap Guy.
Everyone messes up sometimes, the most important thing you can do in that scenario is to not be too hard on yourself.
Schoell, another awesome and well made video! Truly out did yourself with this one ❤
watching the video until the end was worth it
"I was too caught up in trying to be the best that I forgot to have fun..."
I'm pretty sure Marle herself was speaking to you during those practice matches...
This video deserves more than 13k views
Always nice to have a friend to help you through hard times.
ok my degenerate mind saw the thumbnail and told my mouth to grumble like a caveman "aya gaming, aya gaming" over and over again
God, I love the Omori references so much
Always take your losses as a chance to work on. Regardless of your skill or knowledge on the game. Should you continue fighting on you can over come it. Congrats Schoell the preliminary wasn’t the best but you truly held on and even overcame a giant wall.
SWAP GUY IS BACK
Swap Guy strikes again!! That was so freaking good!
Hell, I felt incredibly nervous sometimes while watching, as if I was the one playing. I was at the edge of my seat!
28:50 - That sync of the chain with the music tho! That was sick!
just... woah
incredible comeback...
even against impossible odds, ya never faltered...
ya earned this lad's respect
i don't see myself running in tournaments, but your videos really motivate me to get good at puyo!!!
I'm supposed to be getting ready for bed for a big thing tomorrow but everything goes out the window when a Schoell upload comes out ; P
That was an incredible video, what an amazing set of events.
Another emotional rollercoaster from Swap Guy, this time featuring some Ace Attorney bangers. 10/10 video as always
this probably is the best video about some kind of tournament, and I'm not even talking about puyo pyuo tetris specifically.
If I were to give like a huge inspiration for my style of tourney run videos... it'd probably be like WolfeyVGC's tournament run videos, informative, gives good play by plays and everything like that.
hey Schoell i love your content! btw, just got ppt2 last night. your content has made me pretty decent at the game. Thanks alot man!
Late congrats on the win! This was a very fun watch!
Damn, this was genuinely intense! Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Amazing how the concept of having fun would boost morale enough to win :)
Alternative Title: Schoell Has Impostor Syndrome Arc
Again, I really need to watch/analyze your videos more so I can get better at Puyo and Tetris. Thanks for the GTR short btw (* ̄∇ ̄)ノ
39:24 Oh this is good from, this is REALLY good from Sss...
*T E C T O N I C S*
...From Schoell
8 months late but amazing tournament run dude
I absolutely love these kinds of videos!! ^^ The way you edit them, how I even become super anxious for you with how intense these games can get. 44 minutes is quite long but I was so observed by it that I just had to see it all to the end! Really awesome that you ended up winning! Against someone you've always lost to, which some may call a bracket demon. Watching this really motivates me to want to learn puyo puyo and tetris at a high level, or at least master a lot of great techniques someday. Very entertaining stuff overall
(also I'm the 69th commenter nice lol)
also, more ideas for an hipothetical puyo puyo x persona scenario:
sinners of the same chains, victims of the same fate
ringo: welcome to primp town, everyone
ryuji: woah!!
ann: it's amazing
haru: beautiful and serene...
draco: there you are ringo, we where gonna begin a puyo match... and... ARE THESE THE PHANTOM THIEVES!?!?
mona: the living legends, if you might agree at that, nice to meet ya
draco: oh... the honor is mine
lidelle: there you are sis!!
lidelle hugs draco, to her annoyance
draco: HEY!! how many times we have gone through this... i'm NOT your sister (her shadow: pathetic... and she calls herself a mighty guardian, even after forgetting about her bond with young lidelle... and the death of our fathers...)
lidelle: sorry... and who are they ringo?
ringo: just some otherworldly friends.. which saved me from the darkest abyss...
lidelle: nice to meet ya... i'm lidelle.
ryuji: skull, glad to meet you. and it's nice to enter a peaceful land for a scenery change...
but... let me ask you this, from someone which suffered the same issue: Do you actually have a family... which is still here?
-the glass of conviction has shattered... as lidelle and draco's memories, their parents's death, and her moving with dark prince to another world to be able to keep herself, her tragic farewell to lidelle, who was sent to primp magic academy as a foster child, to which their bond as sisters was forgotten, the moment their family was shattered.
draco was suffering a painful headache as she found herself facing... herself, but rather than wearing her signature dress, she was wearing a broken armor, mixed with the sweater she gifted lidelle before parting ways.
lidelle didn't fare better, as her shadow manifested in similar appearance, but wearing a torn princess dress, while having pieces of draco's dress, and broken the shoes which she gifted to draco.
on both shadows, golden eyes where born... andd a disapointed look stared at them
to see themselves from a past long forgotten to defend their psyche... lidelle and draco mutually collapsed into depression
ringo: draco, lidelle... WHAT'S WRONG?? PLEASE ANSWER ME?!?!
oldfrey: thanks for doing my job... ren
oldfrey captures the thieves, kirby and co. (which the puyo crew have met beforehand on a separate journey, and ringo
all: WHAT?!??
oldfrey: ya broke the dragon warrior and the innocent child, now, nothing but broken husks walk in their flesh... now to seal the DEAL!!
dedede: what's the endgame, sinner of the old world?
oldfrey: to conquer this land, and show it the TRUE meaning of sin, draco, envious sinner burnend in ashes, and lidelle, whose antics of family where born through eternal sorrow, now watch as they fall to despair, and personally make them spectators of your end...
draco: to think i was with my sister all along... but forgotten her? WHAT KIND OF WARRIOR I AM TO FORGET MY BLOOD AND KIND???!?!
lidelle: had i not been there, had i not watched and trained with her... would they be here, and our bond wouldn't be shattered??? who am i kidding, i don't even deserve to live...
ryuji: NO YOU WON'T!!
lidelle and draco: WHAT?!?
ryuji: you might consider yourselves worthless by failing to save your family... but you carry their legacy within you, your bonds might have been forgotten, but you STILL keep fighting for your dreams... DON'T LET THE PAIN BROUGHT BY THE TRUTH BLIND YOU!! you still deserve to live, regardless of how much i lack in the bond between us, or how little i know you two...
ringo: that's right!! your hearts never forgotten your love between each other, do NOT let oldfrey win, fight, not for yourselves, but for the legacy of your family... DON'T LET THEIR LOVE FOR YOU BE WASTED!!!
draco: the love...
lidelle: between us?
Schoell played OMORI either before or while being in the process of making this video. I can tell, i know what that game does to people.
About like 3 or so months before I made this haha.
A lot of my music choices come from games I recently played or just really like in general.
@@SchoellScrub Close enough, can't say i expected the SUNNY-like Klug animations, those caught me off-guard
Congratulations!
Great video as allways! ❤ congrats on winning a tournament
SCHOELL ??? WHAT WAS THAT EDITING
THAT WAS SO GOOD
Hey nice video 😎
2:06 puyo puyo tetris 5: the misdrops strike back
He seriously pulled out the omori klug! Wow! :p
Schoell, I didn't know you were still active... I'm a big fan, got the game 'cause of your videos. Any recommendations for how I should learn the game?
Aw that's really nice to hear! Always been here, I just take 2 billion decades to make anything haha.
As for learning the game well for PPT you're essentially learning 2 different games and a unique mode in Swap so I'll try to break it down in segments:
For Puyo I recommend searching up the website "puyo.guide".
@@SchoellScrub Thanks... it's an honor, getting advice from my favorite Puyo Puyo Tetris UA-camr. I wish you good luck on your next tournament, or merely your next couple of Puyo Puyo Tetris games if you never do enter another tournament.
First game: Noooooooooo Schoell you fell off!!! :(
Literally next few games: ... DON'T SCARE ME LIKE THAT -////-
(Anyway yeah, fantastic job Schoell you are in my eyes not Swap Guy...but Swap Master ^^)
It's hard. For me, I study to play puzzle games like Puyo Puyo Tetris because it needs to be careful that you just only solve faster. It will accidentally drop fast
21:26 bro double died lol 😂
Well dang, I guess I am gonna need to get way better if I want to be able to become my own pro player to be able to give those who are my opponent a fun fight
People saying that schoell are noob when they seeing him losing, but they doesnt know is that he just didnt using his scrubby magic power yet (soz for my bad english)
LETS GOOOOOOOO
beautiful
part two: flares of rebellion reawaken:
???: so, the truth you finally see... young maiden?
lidelle suddenly suffers great pain in her head
lidelle: GHAAAAAAAAAH!!! who... are you?
???: a living mistery, one never discovered... because your resolve faltered.
lidelle: what... do you mean?
???: your father's love and care guided you here... yet will you let their deaths dether you from saving your friend... do you rather have not been there, and lose the love and passion for your sister?... and the bonds with your friends here to a foolish thought?!
lidelle: no...
???: will you finally shatter the mask you wear, and stand for those you hold dear... even at your own risk and suffering?? trade your safety for freedom in pain? stand finally to bring your dream to FRUITION!!
lidelle: i won't just will... I'LL MAKE SURE YOU PAY IF YOU DARE HURT THEM!!!
s. lidelle: then a contract must be made, between yourself and your heart, bind yourself to the flames of rebellion... and BURN those who harm those we hold dear
- a mask appears, dragon shaped, on lidelle's face
s. lidelle: i am thou, thou art i... unleash the furious dragon, whose justice will be your CALL!!!
lidelle: you can bet i won't hold back in the pursuit of truth, so... unveil yourself... MULAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!
in a bloody upstream before transforming into blue flames, lidelle transformed, a princess with traces of a samurai, and the dragon mask, semblant of her resolve... firmly held in her hand, revealing a deadly grin with crimson eyes, as a female samurai, with blood-red shoes, a curved sword, a chinese dress alongside leather armor, and a dragon serving as spectral scarf appeared...
lidelle: ain't it nice that you dare separe me from my friends and dear sister, and use my family's death to break me... tainting their noble name in fiendish blasfemy... well, to bad for you... because this maiden will bring by her bloodly arm, the justice you have mocked, in the name of those who have fallen in noble cause, lend me your strength... AS I SHATTER this fiend's pride...
you ain't chaining this dragon no longer.

I feel like I just watched a tournament anime
You had the same problem when I first played ppt and that’s trouble shooting. Your mental state at the beginning was off at first but when your doubts came in you had a luck counter and I experienced it before when I play offline playing against characters with hard ai. A luck counter is a mental way of getting back into the game. Your mind is set to be smart mode and you play well at the end.
Damn he's good.
WE’RE SO BACK

Okay I knew I had to watch the whole vid b4 comenting again, Omori must have hit you hard for you to go out of your way to get that Calm Down scene done heheh
This was exciting and tense all the way through, but I can't muster up anything proper, you simply always know how to make the most out of everything for your vids, it was a fun and tense ride
Common Schoell W
Thank you haha!
Omori was a dang good time, although it wasn't necessarily my intention to incorporate anything from it when I first wrote up the script for this.
It was like:
- I wrote up the first draft of the script and then edited the draft a bit
- I play Omori
- I record my lines
- Notice that I already have a bit where I try to calm myself down and I was struggling to come up with an interesting visual other than soley relying on vignettes, greyscales and other effects to get the point across.
- I thought the original animation looked really cool
- I tried animating something myself for the first time
- It got added in.
I'm still watching the vid, god that first round hurt so bad
