Chow Hall Procedures (Class 18-09)

  • Update 14 July 2014: The same questions keep coming up about this so I will try to answer them. First, some people don't have food because they want to eat breakfast elsewhere with their families. This is graduation day from Navy Officer Candidate School, so our families are there watching; this is really only a demonstration for them of how we ate, three times every single day for about 10 weeks. The last two weeks we have more freedom to eat however we want. Also, Navy OCS uses Marine Corps Drill Instructors - it seems there was some confusion about that as well.
    ***
    The daily routine of Chow Hall Procedures, presented on graduation morning for the viewing pleasure of our families. However, Class 25-09 stole the spotlight for a while getting chewed out "for real" right next to us on the other side of the Shark Tank. But it made a good contrast between Outpost and graduation day.
    Here are the 10-counts for properly eating at chow:
    1) snap head down
    2) grab your "war spoon"
    3) scoop food onto your "war spoon"
    4) put the spoon and its contents into your face
    5) return spoon properly grounded to the lower starboard corner of your tray
    6) snap head back up
    7) masticate (chew)
    8) swallow
    9) recover and hold your blue-drink or water with "knife hands"
    10) drink your drink and return the glass to the top port edge of your tray

    @Username4453 this is Navy training, but trained by Marine Corps DI's. this is only done during training, and only for this one program. other training programs do not necessarily eat like this.
    the lady at the corner is not eating anything because she wanted to eat a "real" breakfast with her family that morning. this is the morning of graduation, and this is a "perforamce" for our family to show them how we ate everyday.

    Since this is OCS, I can totally understand: about 90 percent of the crap they do to you in officer-accession schools is to see just how bad you want to be an officer. The Army had "square meals" where not only did you have to raise your fork straight off the dish until it was level with your mouth then bring the fork straight into your mouth (and eat at the position of attention), all the things on your plate had to form an exact square. Army warrant officer school had "deficiency cards" - for instance, your mattress had to be aligned exactly with the rails on your bunk on both sides, but the mattress was wider than the rails so you had to write deficiency cards explaining why the standard wasn't met...and you had to make new ones every day. The Marines...well, the USMC should patent "fucking with the troops" because they've got that shit down to an exact science, but if you go to Marine OCS they really fuck with you. Not sure what the Air Force does but I assure you it's no gentleman's course.

    • @Zerospacedude
      @Zerospacedude Рік тому +1

      In Marine OCS you grab your food from the line bring it to your seat and then go get 2 glasses of drink while leaving your food on the table. I swear sometimes the Sergeant Instructors would take your food while you were gone and throw it away, you’d come back to the table not knowing where your food was. Happened a couple of times to a few people. I swear it was the instructors fucking with us, but I never saw them do it; its up there with Bermuda Triangle and Area 51 for sure

    the navy candidates ate three hot, prepared meals per day for ten weeks while at OCS? at Army OCS, we ate about twenty meals at our 'dining facility' in our four month class. we had to get 200 candidates through there in seven minutes, starting with 12 chin ups at the entry door. i was the first student First Seargent, and when i called it a chow hall, as i was moving the platoons to our first 'meal' there, the TAC officers attacked me for calling it that, and made me low crawl in front of the company as i marched them over to the dining facility. it was across the street, beyond a big field. good times.

    When I served back in the 70's the chow hall was one of two places where you could not be harassed by DI's or anyone. You had to be left alone when you ate. Also, they could not prevent you from attending chapel services on Sunday, or bother you on the way to or from the chapel. I guess things have changed. For the worse.

      John on wives computer. Served in the CG from 1963 to 67. Once you were in the mess hall you were expected to eat all you had put on your plate(mess tins were phased out the week I got there) Now, per CG video, a recruit gets a ration of bs in the chow hall. Completely disagree with this tactic where ever it is done and that would include the academies, OCS, enlisted boot camp etc. Enough training should be sufficient outside the mess hall. This is nonsense no matter who gives an answer to the contrary.

    Must be the Marine way of thinking. I was in the Army and the only thing they gave you was a certain amount of time to eat your meals but as long as you were outside in formation at a certain time, they didn't care if you ate slow or fast or in unison or whatever. This way would drive me insane!!!!

    I think they're trying to "retrain" them, that is, make them unlearn what might cause problems on the field and then learn what the military wants them to. Efficacy is debatable, obviously, but I'm sure that, if someone devises a better system, it'll (eventually) be put into practice.

      Not even that. This is pointless to the extent where you will never ever do this in your entire military career or get someone near that level of blind obedience. I get shove everything in while only having two minutes, believe I was there. But this is just pointless... it teaches to follow orders and traditions without second thought, to not think and adapt to the situation. Hell when I had 5 minutes to shower, shave, make my bunk, shit, and be there 15 minutes early of course. That teaches time management, urgency, tasks you'll probably have to do when you're deployed in a desert with cold ass water and rationing MRE's when on long convoys or patrols. This is just stupid.

    To all of those who say that the purpose of this is futile. Saying that "no other country's military in the world does this" is a poor argument. The United States has the most powerful military on the planet for a good reason. "Every other country" is just an example of what NOT to replicate

    • @JaniceHope
      @JaniceHope 6 років тому +5

      Yeah, the reason is money and politicians who use the military for their donors as world police force and steady income for the involved companies. The most powerful military has mastered how to eat like idiots, but can't win the war against terror since 16 years and counting. In fact the us-style warfare is the guarantee that this "war" will continue for years to come.
      More money will be thrown to the corporate donors while the ppl who can't afford college fees and basic health care will be the minds and bodies used (and hurt) in wars that claim to defend US Freedom in foreign countries in the middle east, aftica, asia and latin america, while at home the surveillance state (and corporate data hogs) undermine that "freedom" at every level of your life. That's US exceptionalism at work.

    LOL! This is hilarious. I don't think we do anything remotely like this in the UK. Yep they do have lessons on silver service etc, but nothing as bad as this. I wonder if the US Army personnel have a history of stomach ulcers, gastric problems, constipation etc. Over here, they soldiers do line up before mess hall but then get dismissed and it's their time when they are within that hall. They can eat with who they like and what they like. It's just like a lunch hour at school, they get a time to get back but the rest of it is their time.
    I think the American way can teach discipline, but it also treats everyone like a complete idiot, thus not really helping on the initiative scale.

Now the drills yelling in your is for a purpose, not for them to cruel. In all actuality the drills are there to give you encouragement and to make sure that when or if friends, family, husband or wife were ever to face combat they'll remember what there drills taught them.

    What's the big deal? That used to be called having a "Square Meal" and was common at the service academies. It's the same as the ten point system but more detailed...You had to bring the food straight up from the plate pause,and then bring it staight to your mouth, all in a square motion. The eater was then required to chew that mouthful of food 27 times before swallowing; if they failed to chew 27 times they would then have to chew for a witness and then request permission to swallow.
