Albums used to be all about side A with side B being the more experimental or weaker songs. So it's not unusual for the weaker track to be at the end. This album is one of the most classic heavy metal albums, and incredible production. Even the weaker songs on this record are better than anything they've done in the last 20 years. As for success...it's one of the biggest selling albums of all time, not just metal albums. Sad But True is great, not a dud. And Of Wolf & Man has a killer riff.
The riff in my friend of misery that is playing on the intro and in the back is bass. The instrumental was actually a record that Jason Newsted(the bassist) brought to the band with this riff but they decided to put lyrics in it. Personally it’s my favourite song in this album. 🔥

"Wherever I may roam" could also be interpreted as a song about the life of a rockstar. They tour all the time and don't actually have their own place, or you could also say that they live everywhere they perform, in their tour bus, etc. They thirve in this kind of environment, are used to it and feel at home while touring, but at the same time they forget what it feels like to live a slower-paced, "normal" life. They are also "free to speak their mind anywhere" while performing their music and sending whatever message they want through their lyrics.
It's technically the self-titled album that has ab all black cover It's inspired by the album of "Smell The Glove" by Spinal Tap (Which is a fictional rock band from England)
I'm not sure where to start... If you like the creation process, there's a film titled "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" chronicling the making of the Black album (which, of course, I love). The part where they grant the with from a kid from the Make a Wish Foundation melts my heart. Another film was made for the St. Anger album titled "Some Kind of Monster." I hope you do more of these! It's been a wild ride watching the changes and progression from Kill 'Em All through the upcoming release of 72 Seasons... So much material to go through. My best wishes on your endeavors, and thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings. Regards, J
Hey, great reaction. The key lyric from in Sad But True is "I'm you" at the end, up till then it's all in 3rd person (and even that statement is). Through the Never is my fave, uncertainty in our universe. Cheers
Would you consider doing reactions to Ghost's albums? They are a VERY accessible, catchy band that leans much, much closer to hard rock, and has a really fun gimmick and stageshow. You could even start with their newest album, which is extremely fun. (Imo every single album of theirs is a ride, but the latest one is just so well produced and catchy that I have to recommend it.)
Fun fact, the solo on Nothing Else Matters is not performed by Kirk, it is played by James. Just like the first solo on Master of Puppets, it is played by James. Its not often that James plays solos on songs, but when he does its always special, very different than Kirk's solos.
Lol @ you trying to stop yourself from cracking up throughout some of the songs. I half expected you to start snapping your fingers and exclaiming "smooth!" at a few points. :D Fun reaction.
Fun fact the first heavy main riff in Enter Sandman that repeats three times than finishes was lead guitarist Kirk Hammet's riff from an older band, but he took it to Lars and James and they liked it, although it was only played once, Lars said it sounds better with 3 repeats and now we have this legendary song. It was also one of my favourites and when i went to see them Live 2 times they played it both times and it was surreal that they were right infront of you after seeing the posters, listening to Enter Sandman a 1000 times.
Kirk didn't take the riff from an old band. He wrote it whilst they were on the Damaged Justice tour, and he says he was inspired by Soundgarden's then recently released Louder Than Love album.
You need to watch the documentary a year-and-a-half in the life of Metallica they show the making of this album and after they make it they show the their tour
Bubba, I love all of your reactions. I love how you research each song afterwards for meaning and context, it really puts all of the songs in a new light. You've got a great ear. Keep doing what you're doing! You should react to more Nightwish next!
My brother and I were 8 in 91 and I was not into metallica yet it took me years to get into them but they toured for 3 years on this album they didn't start the next album until late 94 to early 95
Oh, you should *absolutely* watch the "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" movie. It's a brilliant view into the writing, recording, and touring of the Black Album. This is the album that introduced me to metal, and I love it to this day.
Unbelievable of course this is your favorite, fuc**** kids. Kidding, not surprised it's a great album. When I heard Sandman in '91 @16yrs old I LOVED it. Like I wanted to marry it. And Justice is/was then my favorite buy it's undeniable this album is a sonic masterpiece.
I’m a first 4 purist just like the next guy but the production on this is better than any album of any genre in my opinion. It is as perfect as it gets.
When I first heard this album there were a couple of songs that I thought of as just ok too. However, I put the tape in my car on the way from Vegas to L.A. By the time I got to Baker I was pretty fond of all of them. So far that opinion has stuck and it remains possibly my favorite Metallica album. But it's seriously difficult for me to pick a favorite.
I think I was the perfect age when this was brand new. 12 years old! I kinda wish I was 12 when Kill Em All came out. But there was no album more bad ass to a middle schooler in 1991.
I used to think "Enter Sandman" would have been a perfect addition to one of the Freddy Krueger movies if they hadn't ended (with part six) before this album came out. "New Nightmare" only arrived a few years later.

You really need to listen to Fade to Black. If you like the acoustic and classical instrumentation then you will love “Fade to Black” and also “For Whom the Bell Tolls” Both are on the Ride the Lightning Album. Should probably just listen to the whole Lightning album. You should also give the S&M album a try. They performed a live concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
I do too actually I'm a cliff burton nut and my fave is justice and no cliff after this is touch and go for sure but that's just my opinion my first was ride in 1987 when I was 7 years old hails 🤘😈🤘
Good review great to see someone new listen to this album. My 1st listen was when it came out. It's the only metallica I listen to, that and whiskey in the jar. I think this album is best looked at as a whole, all of the songs generally fit the same mood, some stronger some weaker but really they are all good. My favorite is nothing else.matters, friend of misery. The album came out at the right time when there was a fascination with death/death metal, religion or questioning religion, also classical music being used in metal, and just general expressing yourself with anger/metal. It came out at just the right time and captures all of it. Never get tired of listening to it either after what.. 25 /30 years.....
watching your initial comment on the song "enter sandman", in which you say that you only heard the "master of puppets" was exactly the criticism of many fans of this album on its release. They didn't expect that there would be such a radical difference in their music.
This is good album, no doubt! For myself, maybe most played record from them. it just happened to appear at the right time in my early adolescence, so you couldn't avoid to hear it coz it was played everywhere. The structures of the songs are a little simpler than before, they have more groove and vocal harmonies, all that you can expect from a hit record. There aren't any bad songs on this album, except maybe nothing else matters, which does have a good solo but otherwise has never been my favorite. But as an album its damn solid. You can find your favorites easily and more you listen , more you will find out. One of my favorite compositions has always been my friend of misery, especially the opening melody is soulful. if you've ever suffered from depression or are prone to melancholy, it's easy to find comfort in this (in terms of the melody)..
I hope you react to the Load and Reload albums sometime. In my opinion the most underrated Metallica albums, very different from anything you’ve heard from them so far.

You should check out A year & half in the life of Metallica, a great behind the scenes doc about making the album. The production stuff, the dynamics between the band and Rock, the creative process are very fun to watch
Great review. Well above expectations from only reading the title. You're actually invested in the foundation of the songs and what not. Kudos!
You can sing a Kirk Hammet guitar solo, that's what makes him a great musician and legendary lead guitarist.
This to me is one of their best albums as a whole. Every song is amazing
I remember when this came out they had a ONE time viewing , a 17 minute video they produced with the little kid to an old man in it in a catacomb. the little kid trying to dig out of the block Prison through the video, still trying to dig out as an old man..
Love that album! Still sounds fresh like day one. The production is massive and the music really has balls.
I really love that you understand music and its composition ✌🏽
Baby Metalhead, great reaction. You’re doing great and welcome to the rock side! “It’s got girth.” God bless and Metal on!
The riff in my friend of misery that is playing on the intro and in the back is bass. The instrumental was actually a record that Jason Newsted(the bassist) brought to the band with this riff but they decided to put lyrics in it. Personally it’s my favourite song in this album. 🔥
The week this album released i had to drive round trip from my home in Central Florida to Nashville, Tennessee with only a tape player and this cassette. It was a long trip
Black album, one of MAYBE 5 albums that I genuinely like every song! I bought this when it first got released when I was in high school...one of the first CD's I ever bought!
Really ? in all you life you could find only 5 albums that you genuinely like every song in them ? or were you referring specifically to metallica ?
This was the very first CD I ever bought as a teenager.
@@gal2659 most albums there is at least one song I don’t like
@@swampcrypt I like some albums all the way through. I like and justice for all the entire way through I like master of puppets all the way through and the black album all the way through I’m not a huge fan of kill em all but I love four horsemen and seek and destroy. Ride the lightning is my favourite Metallica album but I don’t like escape. I love nevermind by nirvana but I definitely skip a couple of songs. The Beatles are my favourite band ever but only abbey road and rubber soul are perfect albums that I love every song.
@@swampcrypt it’s my favourite Metallica album because the rest of the songs on that album are theirs strongest songs in my opinion but I always skip escape.
The songs that fade out have alternate endings when performed live. Some of them really badass.
That's because you can't fade out live.
@@moderusprime thank you captain obvious😂
@@billbrasky1288 Yeah, because it's not obvious songs that fade out wouldn't end differently live 🙄
@@moderusprime you just felt like typing words today, huh?
@@billbrasky1288 Hypocrisy at it's finest.
The Unforgiven is my fav song on the album. Dave Mustaine said that too.
Didn't claim to write that too, did he?😏
It's technically the self-titled album that has ab all black cover
It's inspired by the album of "Smell The Glove" by Spinal Tap (Which is a fictional rock band from England)
I thought it was a play on the Beatles “White Album”, which was also a self titled album with a white cover and the band name.
Regards,
J
This was me in like 94-95 :) You earned yourself another subscriber. Keep it up :P
I'm pleased to discover you listened to the heavier stuff before Metallica. You're very privileged to have that perspective lol
This is actually a great album. It plods along, attacking at every turn.
Lots of people trashed this album but it, load, and reloaded are my favorites.
The Unforgiven, Wherever I may Roam, Nothing else Matters and My Friend of Misery, my favorite songs on the album.
Great album , I like a lot of thier stuff, hardcore people embrace the first three albums, they can't accept the bad growing and exploring music
Really loving this full album format you're doing. I wish more reactors did that, but, I guess that cuts into the potential profits LOL
I started metal by this album when i was young
Thanks for doing this and making this day beautiful for me 🥰
Unbelievable of course this is your favorite, fuc**** kids.
Nothing can touch Metallica's first five albums.
You get it darling...
I love it..
Thank u Awesome reaction...
Lars is one of the best drummers to me. His feel is amazing on this album and those before
This album i can play start to finish. Wherever i may roam has a fucking amazing intro.
I think you'd like any of their first 4 also. All bangers. All platinum.
I live in WNC but never heard of of you before discovering this channel. Guess I have to get out more. Many of my friends are in the music scene in Asheville. I work too much, so ,I don't get out on the regular. Do you have a schedule where I can find a upcoming performance.
Any album that has four hit songs on it, in my book, is a masterpiece.
This one and ride the lightning are the only ones I can listen to every song
You would enjoy reacting to an album by a band called BRIDE. The album is called Snakes in the Playground. But make sure it’s the full band, not the acoustic version of the album. Hope to see it on here. Enjoy. God bless and Metal on!
I'm so glad you reacted to this album, don't get me wrong their previous albums were great but so over done by reactors it's just refreshing to see this thanks 👌
duds for me Holier than thou, Don't Tread on Me, The Struggle Within.
I rate all of their albums except for St Anger, and this one in particular was a gateway album for me in the early 90's
Hi kayla, you're so adorable! I'm so glad that I ran into your channel. There's nothing like being a brand new Metalhead. You only going to get to be this once so enjoy the hell out of it!!! ☠🤘👻
Struggle Within is every single bit as much of a banger for a closer as Damage Inc.
Hi ya it's Stuart from Australia
I'm loving your reaction vids also I'm loving your wallpaper behind you, just wondering where you got.
Cheers Stu.
There is also The Nothing else Matters (elevator Version) no drums and louder strings.

Enter Sandman might be their biggest hit song but Master of Puppets is considered their signature song.
Master of Puppets is deffs their signature song but Enter Sandman was massive.
What a fun reaction!!! Well done!!
Feel like you should do the S&M live performed (the first one) - I think you’ll love it…
I do too actually I'm a cliff burton nut and my fave is justice and no cliff after this is touch and go for sure but that's just my opinion my first was ride in 1987 when I was 7 years old hails 🤘😈🤘
Try and justice for all album of metallica. Thats the real bangeeeeeeeeeer
React to the And justice for all album
Hope got to check them out live I went to both LA shows it was fucking great 🤘🤘
watching your initial comment on the song "enter sandman", in which you say that you only heard the "master of puppets" was exactly the criticism of many fans of this album on its release. They didn't expect that there would be such a radical difference in their music.
Applying lip gloss during 'Wherever I May Roam'. I've seen it all now. haha.
There are 3 parts to The Unforgiven.
They documented the reocording and touring of this album you should watch, "Metallica: A year in a half in the life of Metallica"
