Absolutely. For me, Inamorata sounds like a homage to Astronomy, except it’s not as good. The bass tone and the descending bass riff part in particular.
Patrick's ability to make jokes and be so positive out of such a difficult situation is truly inspiring! means a lot to me especially as I have lost several loved ones to cancer and another relative is also currently fighting the disease. Thanks for being amazing!
3:01:30 They have many acoustic versions of their songs. They performed acoustic sets at the "Bridge school benefit" concerts in the 90's. Now they have their own benefit concert, "All within my helping hands foundation," where they perform acoustically. They have also released acoustic versions of "All within my hands" and "Blackened" during the covid lock downs.
During a concert in Brisbane back in early 2000's they did a acoustic version of....The Four Horsemen! Yeh....the crowd there went strangly silent until Jason fired them up!
i'm only 10 minutes in, you asked if they ever did other covers; They did a covel medley of Dio/Heaven&hell/Rainbow - And its fantastic. It's called Ronnie Rising. They also did an Iron Maiden cover "Remember tomorrow".
They sound so tight in the Ronnie Rising medley. I remember when it came out, and I was praying and hoping that this sound was going to be on the album they were working on.
An interesting thing is that this album sold a shit ton for a cover album, and several of the artists covered on it made way more money just from royalties on this album than any of their own records.
Yep the irony is that with the way that recording contracts historically work, artists who don't sell tons of records actually made mediocre money if any money at all off their own recordings... Including a lot of the bands covered by Metallica. Every band covered by Metallica has been very grateful.
@@sercan068 I posted multiple comments on this video (I add them as the topics come up), and I did mention these as well. Those are some of my favorite covers.
3:30:10 To be honest Chris, it's because you guys are the only guys I have found on UA-cam that actually make this kind of content. Long-form, in-depth, chill-vibe music reviews for my favorite artist of all time (Metallica). I started watching your guys's videos back in August, and I've watched every Metallica one since, as well as some other ones. I love this channel, and I love the long-form content. Like the other Chris said, it's good for getting through stuff too. I'll have the video up and listen to it while I do homework (about to graduate college) or when I am playing a casual video game at night. It's nice to hear the technical perspective when it comes to these albums that I've heard dozens of times. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, I just wanted to respond to the question. Great video, guys! Keep up the good work! Even though I rarely ever agree with Patrick's opinions, I can't wait for more!
When it comes to Metallica, cover songs are a big part of their roots and identity. And tbh they take other bands' songs and make them their own better than any other band in my opinion. Both disc1 and disc2 are great. They are Metallica like they are in essence. Gritty, groovy and aggressive (even though the first disc is much more chill because of the phase they were in their style of music).
They have done a ton of covers since Garage Inc...Remember Tomorrow by Iron Maiden, When A Blind Man Cries by Deep Purple, a Rainbow Rising Medley, a BUNCH of Ramones covers in the St. Anger era, and they've done All Your Lies and Head Injury by Soundgarden, Borderline by Thin Lizzy, In My Life by the Beatles, Hole In The Sky by Black Sabbath, It's Killing Me by UFO,
About the "selling a lot of CD's" at 10'50" argument, the thing is that with this album they foremost made rich all the original composers of the songs. I remember an interview from - of course - guy from Diamond Head saying they can live with just the metallica covers royalties, but also Lemmy on "his" movie discussing with actor Billy Bob Thornton in a bar and saying him he received the biggest check of his carreer not from Ace of Spades or any of Motorhead's biggest success, but from the selling of Garage Inc or from the EP "Motorheadache".
They’ve done heaps of covers since this release. They usually do covers before they record a new album, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a few unreleased covers from recent years. They did all the Ramones covers in 2003, and since then it’s been sporadic but in studio they’ve covered Iron Maiden, Ennio Morricone, Rainbow, Deep Purple and Kinks. They also recorded some live acoustic covers at numerous Bridge School Benefit gigs and others.
I want to say something about the conversation in 10:00 minutes, they did even more cover songs after Garage Inc. and they are all on the bonus limited 3 disc Hardwired To Self Destruct album you haven't listened to
Love the part at 8:43 when Mr. Parker says ''I stink''. Made my day. Also, he's wrong about them not doing covers anymore. There's 2 covers and 1 medley on the bonus disc of Hardwired.
@@TeamWolfySoupyDio medley was released in 2014, but I think I saw it once somewhere that it was recorded back to back with When A Blind Man Cries and that one was recorded in 2012. But I don’t know for sure
I once heard James in an interview say that Garage Inc was to “pay back” all the bands they were covering early on that helped them get their start. I guess the idea is Metallica knew they were going to have to pay out royalties to the original bands on this album - some of whom had really short or unsuccessful careers - so they made they album knowing that if it sold well it may have been some of these band’s biggest pay checks of their careers. The writers of the two big singles from it by Bob Segar and Thin Lizzy probably didn’t need any help but I bet the bands that wrote songs like Last Caress and Am I Evil never saw record sales close to what they knew Garage Inc would do.
True! The dude from Kind Diamond once said in a documentary that because of Garage Inc he was able to buy a house in the UK and has been kind of living off the royalties ever since
Another banger of a video guys! I normally watch the metallica reactions but since your reaction skills have improved drastically i think all of your videos deserve a watch
They also did a cover of House of the rising sun in a 2020 streaming show, and a lot more during their acoustic shows (Borderline and It's killing me are the most recent ones) And, yes, you should definitely listen to We did it again, it's absolutely horrible and hilarious.
For perspective, Lars mentioned in the interview, to get out of Elektra contract and re claim their masters, they need to release 4 remaining albums before 2000. Load Reload, Garage Inc and S&M.
~2:46:00 how about covers that are almost note for note identical? Anthrax covered Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son" and you could literally play the two tracks at the same time and they're perfectly in sync
I think the key to giving an overall review/opinion of Garage Inc. is right in front of us - at the bottom of your video background - SOMEWHAT PRODUCED ... and being that this album is a throwback or even followup to (and including the tracks of) 1987's Garage Days Re-revisited, it's noted as NOT VERY PRODUCED
The "beep beep beep" on Die Die My Darling is feedback through a guitar with a pickup turned down and then flicking the toggle switch. Old Ace Frehley trick. I've played this live and know how it was done because I saw the Misfits perform it when they had 2 guitarists in later days
They do have MANY unplugged shows over the years with the "Bridge School Benfit" shows and the "All Within My Hands" Benefit concerts. It is wild. they COMPLETELY re-tooled heavy tunes like "Disposable Heroes", and covered a BUNCH of great tunes. They never stopped doing covers. Hope you're doing well! I enjoy your reactions because none of my friends have anything like the same musical interests as me, so our music chats are all very superficial and this scratches an itch.
There was some making-of videos recorded for Garage Inc, and there are two things that I definitively remember from them: one is the whiteboard chart where they listed all of the intended songs in rows and had the instrument tracks/stems listed as columns to be checked off for each track as they were recorded. The other is that the guys got together to record gang vocals at some point, though I don't remember for which song. With that said, I can pick up Jason's vocals in the "die die die my darling" part!
Disc 1 definitely fits in the "Load era" of Metallica. Along with the singles "I disappear" from the MI2 soundtrack, and "No leaf Clover" and "-Human" from S&M. Load era was my favorite era of Metallica...
They’ve done a bunch of acoustic covers as well, including Brothers in Arms (Dire Straits), Borderline (Thin Lizzy), Please Don’t Judas Me (Nazareth), Blackened (er, Metallica…), It’s Killing Me (UFO) and others.

Metallica covered When a Blind Man Cries by Deep Purple and Remember Tomorrow by Iron Maiden on the deluxe version of Hardwired. That’s the most recent covers Metallica has done to my knowledge
I like the nostelgic lowfi aspect of cassette. It takes me back to the 80s and 90s when CD weren't yet mainstream and you got all the glorious imperfections that comes with tape. It's basically for those of us who want to go back in time, and hear modern music sounding a little more vintage.
Speaking of covers, and Metallica... It might be interesting for you guys to react to the Metallica songs performed by other huge artists during their MTV Icon spotlight from 2003 awards show. And briefly if you dont know, Icon was a show on MTV that honored musicians who were selected as "cultural icons".
Listen to “No Life till Leather” That’s their first actual album. But it was there demo. Good Songs and they are all just Kill em All songs but kinda different
Diamond Head was a major influence on Metallica, their earliest shows they only had a couple of original songs and would play 4-5 Diamond Head covers along with other NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) cover songs, many of which are on Disc 2 of Garage Inc
Yeah, and listen to Metallica's "Seek & Destroy" next to Diamond Head's "Sucking My Love" and you can soooo hear the influence they had on them at the time. They adored Diamond Head. :-) Rightfully so... Diamond Head was an amazing band.
Patrick, you look well. All the best for you, man. Btw, there is a new fan-version of St Anger, "St [b]Anger", which has new instrumentation, small changes to arrangement, some editing (album is 30mins shorter) but Hetfield's vocals. I find it, frankly, incredible.
This! And the st. (b)Anger fn rules! I'd love to hear their thoughts on it, but I guess the album reaction is over and done and there are no revisiting. Who knows
Actually one of the main reasons Metallica did this album (as well as ReLoad and S&M) in such a short span was because they owed record company like 6 more albums after Load and wanted to get out of the contract as quickly as possible. So they put out these three in three years, then they wanted to do another quick one (which turned out to be St. Anger), and the last two were Death Magnetic and Lulu, which obviously took a ton of time.
03:01:55 sounds like you wanna listen to Metallica: Disposable Heroes (AWMH Helping Hands Concert - November 3, 2018) 03:11:11 they released the full version on The Memory Remains single in the UK, The Outlaw Torn (Unencumbered by Manufacturing Restrictions Version)
They did gang vocals on Die Die my darling. Its in the making of garage inc. Kirk, Lars and Jason. And then Jason did some extra solo backing tracks to it.
Regarding the Metallica + rap part of the conversation, there was a Swizz Beatz track called "We Did It Again" featuring Ja Rule and Metallica. Kirk's wah and James' vocals are present. IIRC the track came out when James was in rehab and not long after Jason quit. To me, it sounded like they took some of James' vocals from their vault and just threw it in the track. It was on the "Biker Boyz" movie soundtrack.
They still do covers to this day. Like other posters have stated, the deluxe version of Harwired, disc 3 has some covers. There's a medley of Dio songs that they did for that trivute album. When A Blind Man Cries, a Deep Purple song is from that tribute album, and the Iron Maiden song Remember Tomorrow. Also Metallica still does plays covers live at their shows still. During the World Magnetic tour in the late 2000's, during their encore, they played various cover songs. Also, they've included Turn The Page and Whiskey In The Jar in their live set to this day
watch it later, just came to click on the thumb and comment ! thanks guys, I love this album. First of their album I listen multiple times until I know every single note
They made a few covers after this. The b-sides on many of the St Anger singles have a bunch of Ramones covers and there are a few covers on the 3rd disc of Hardwired.
3:30:09 Cause we we like you guys! Personally I don't see any great reason to break up Garage Inc. disc 2 but if you wanna split it up -- fine. Not sure why anyone would have a problem with that, especially considering they were all recorded at different times.
You guys should definitely react to Black Sabbath first five albums. The fact Patrick associated their sound to doom only isn’t wrong, but each of their album up until Sabotage included have so much variety. Maybe they already covered Black Sabbath, I’ve not verified yet, but it definitely deserved the shot.
I’ve been a diehard Metallica fan since 2007 (which at this point is well over half my life), and I just want to say Patrick is 100% correct: Ronnie is an absolute banger of a song.
I didn’t know about the song Mercyful fate until I played it on guitar hero Metallica and it wasn’t until way after I found out it was a medley of 5 songs made by a different band. I love the song. It’s my favorite cover song Metallica has done and it’s their longest song they ever recorded.
This album was a way for Metallica to pay back the artists who influenced them. Many of the bands like Diamond Head have stated they never have to work again based on the money they made from this. Even Lemmy talked about how lucrative this was for him.
Guys, you're the only reaction videos I've seen that are worth watching. I have two video ideas for you: 1. take some song you like from the Black Album (because it has the best extras in Deluxe editions) and analyse the changes that were made to that song since riff tape, through demos (Black album Deluxe editions have even multiple demo versions of same songs) rough mixes, alternate takes until final version. 2. same thing but maybe something from older album and see differences in sound of the band over different eras of live performances, i.e Moscow 1991, Cunning Stunts 1996, Through the never 2013(?) Take care, escpecially Patrick!
Metallica still does cover songs now and again, especially during their acoustic AWMH charity concerts - they released the 2019 concert in limited vinyl and pretty sure its on spotify. During Chris Cornell Tribute concert they did two SoundGarden covers, also released on limited 7inch via Metallica vinyl club, not sure if those are on spotify or not?
Check out the bonus disc of Hardwired as there are three more recent covers from late 2000s-2010s that you should definitely check out: the aforementioned Ronnie Rising Medley covering Rainbow and Dio, Remember Tomorrow that belongs to Iron Maiden and an amazing rendition of When A Blind Man Cries by Deep Purple. Thank you for the video! Great to see all the three of you together again :)
Some of my favorite covers NOT on this album: 3. "Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World" by The Ramones 2. "When a Blind Man Cries" by Deep Purple 1. "Remember Tomorrow" by Iron Maiden Note: In the St. Anger era, they recorded a whole EP's worth of Ramones covers as possible releases on a Ramones tribute album. "53rd and 3rd" was the song chosen, I believe. But they also did "Commando," "Cretin Hop," We're a Happy Family," and "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue."
This was the last album where they put in real work around getting an incredible guitar tone, bass, and drum sound. Vocals were also recorded perfectly.......they are incapable of putting together or working hard to present a cohesive sound. The most baffling band of all time IMO.
Hardwired and 72 seasons both sound very digital especially the guitars. It’s a letdown after hearing this album. Garage Inc was their best sounding release besides the black album. Which is a shame since these aren’t original Metallica songs lol
That was recorded in like 2011 when Dio died. It wasn’t even new when hardwired came out. I don’t think they’ve studio recorded any covers since then. Only live acoustic covers
1:31:30 They did in fact record the gang vocal with Lars, Kirk, and Jason dubbing over James' vocal. There are a couple videos floating around showing the behind the scenes of recording Garage, Inc. as a promotional for it's release. ua-cam.com/video/MYXlbfxxbkk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/lVCgA1wMJrg/v-deo.html
The chorus on "Die Die my Darling" are indeed the 3 other members singing the chorus contrary to what you think lol, there's a video about the making of. And Jason just gives the damn vibe of the chorus of the song
WHISKEY IN THE JAR was a cover of a cover ... of a cover, meaning Thin Lizzy did it in 1972 (and made it a rock song - therefore Metallica's follow up version) It's a traditional Irish drinking song dated so far back, the orgin is tough to pinpoint. Several artists have done several versions of it ... a huge part of St. Patrick's day celebrations
Astronomy is the absolute hidden gem on this first disc
Yup. Astronomy is one of the top 5 songs they’ve ever done.
Absolutely. For me, Inamorata sounds like a homage to Astronomy, except it’s not as good. The bass tone and the descending bass riff part in particular.

I like the nostelgic lowfi aspect of cassette. It takes me back to the 80s and 90s when CD weren't yet mainstream and you got all the glorious imperfections that comes with tape. It's basically for those of us who want to go back in time, and hear modern music sounding a little more vintage.
Glad to see you're looking and feeling healthier and healthier as the days go by. Always appreciate the content and reactions!
Metallica played a show in 98 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. It's filmed and so much fun to watch.
@1:31:30 There's a Garage Inc. making of video that shows them all (if I remember correctly) shouting DIE, DIE, DIE.
Listen to “No Life till Leather” That’s their first actual album. But it was there demo. Good Songs and they are all just Kill em All songs but kinda different
Loverman…
Patrick: “I’m loving this song!”
Me “Have you even heard any of it?!?” 🤣🤣
Load better than Death Magnetic.
I find it more sincere and natural. it more than as musically
will you guys still do disc 2? you guys are fucking legends
@@UlrichAlvarez yes, weve just been doing other things until the three of us can get together again!
@@KabukiKid Even Too Far Gone? from 72S sounds like Sucking My Love..
@@marcreichman Oh yes... you can definitely hear it there, as well.
Patrick and an energy drink is a wild combo
Great reaction! We will be waiting for the second disc!!
03:01:55 sounds like you wanna listen to Metallica: Disposable Heroes (AWMH Helping Hands Concert - November 3, 2018)
03:11:11 they released the full version on The Memory Remains single in the UK, The Outlaw Torn (Unencumbered by Manufacturing Restrictions Version)
They did gang vocals on Die Die my darling. Its in the making of garage inc. Kirk, Lars and Jason. And then Jason did some extra solo backing tracks to it.
Patrick my brother. I hope you recover soon, all the best to you
"We're going to get right in it" 33 minutes later...🤣
There's actually some acoustic shows by Metallica. Gems like Disposable heroes, creeping death, blackened, very cool acoustic versions played live.
Yeah, you can see a small clip of them working on it on Some Kind of Monster.
You should definitelly look into Down. Such a cool band :)
I really like the disc 2 track Stone Cold Crazy which is original a Queen song. I think that one is done well
I’ve been a diehard Metallica fan since 2007 (which at this point is well over half my life), and I just want to say Patrick is 100% correct: Ronnie is an absolute banger of a song.
YOOOOOOO! LETS GO!! Sorta sad we didnt get the premiere, but fuck yeah. Looking forward to this!
I didn’t know about the song Mercyful fate until I played it on guitar hero Metallica and it wasn’t until way after I found out it was a medley of 5 songs made by a different band.
I love the song. It’s my favorite cover song Metallica has done and it’s their longest song they ever recorded.
Didn't Inamorata beat it by a little bit?
@@paulcasolari1424 nope. Mercyful fate is 11:12 and inamorata is 11:10.
This album was a way for Metallica to pay back the artists who influenced them. Many of the bands like Diamond Head have stated they never have to work again based on the money they made from this. Even Lemmy talked about how lucrative this was for him.
i almost know every dental filling Yawning not-remote-Chris has at this point XD
Hardwired Deluxe Edition have cover songs on it. Ronnie Rising Medley (Dio), When A Blind Man Cries (Deep Purple) and Remember Tomorrow (Iron Maiden)
I actually liked those songs better, especially the Dio medley.
Guys, you're the only reaction videos I've seen that are worth watching.
I have two video ideas for you:
1. take some song you like from the Black Album (because it has the best extras in Deluxe editions) and analyse the changes that were made to that song since riff tape, through demos (Black album Deluxe editions have even multiple demo versions of same songs) rough mixes, alternate takes until final version.
2. same thing but maybe something from older album and see differences in sound of the band over different eras of live performances, i.e Moscow 1991, Cunning Stunts 1996, Through the never 2013(?)
Take care, escpecially Patrick!
They’ve done lots of acoustic versions of their songs, including Blackened and Disposable Heroes.
Look up their Bridge School concerts.
Wow you look so much healthier! Glad to see it
Dudes, listen to the first Down album. It’s amazing.
“We’ll probably appreciate this better if we didn’t stop between songs to talk.”
Or, if you didn’t talk throughout the song would help, too.
the 6 Ramones covers they did are fun, Kirk, Lars and Bob Rock all have vocals on 1 song and Lars does a verse in another.
Some of my favorite covers NOT on this album:
3. "Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World" by The Ramones
2. "When a Blind Man Cries" by Deep Purple
1. "Remember Tomorrow" by Iron Maiden
Note: In the St.
“When a blind man cries” on 2019 AWMH concert is so freaking good
Great video guys! I was waiting for this. They already played fade to black and other songs unplugged
Charismatic voice gives the best breakdowns of vocals and orchestration on UA-cam. I love her reactions.
FINALLY, THANK YOU!!!
I believe the last "cover" song they did was the Dio medley on Hardwired.

To answer chris’ question on why we watch for so long, it’s because I’m the living embodiment of adhd and gotta clean my room
The chorus on "Die Die my Darling" are indeed the 3 other members singing the chorus contrary to what you think lol, there's a video about the making of. And Jason just gives the damn vibe of the chorus of the song
Didn't they decide to make James only after it ?
WHISKEY IN THE JAR was a cover of a cover ... of a cover, meaning Thin Lizzy did it in 1972 (and made it a rock song - therefore Metallica's follow up version) It's a traditional Irish drinking song dated so far back, the orgin is tough to pinpoint.
Several artists have done several versions of it ... a huge part of St. Patrick's day celebrations
