Checkmate by En passant

- During one of the livestreams at / chessnetwork a viewer proposed I try to give checkmate via En passant to the computer. So we had just a little fun one day with this challenge, attempting to do such against Stockfish Level 1 with time controls 5|2. When I challenged Stockfish Level 1, I mistakenly challenged it to a game where the side with black was without a queen knight. Whoops! Fun fact: I only realized this error when I was editing for this very video. :) En passant is a special move in chess, one that far too many players do not know about. Maybe with the help of this video more players will learn about this unique pawn capture. In my experience, those unaware of the En passant rule can be found not only baffled when it is observed during a game for the first time, but sometimes also accusatory of an opponent that he/she has cheated!! :)

You don't see a notation like that every day:
86. f4 gxf3# e.p.
Wouldn't it be 86.f4 gxf4 e.p.# ?
I'm pretty sure the destination square of your pawn is the one you write down. I think the idea behind e.p. is that you capture the pawn while it is moving past your pawn. In this case while it is on f3.
Sorry, yes I meant 86.f4 gxf3 e.p.#. My point was shouldn't the checkmate symbol go after the whole move notation, rather than before the e.p.
Oh, yes, sure. My bad.
86... gxf3#.
You dont need to precise e.p.
Do it with level 8 next
He probably can run level 8 on a really slow computer with a tight time control
If you do not know what En passant is and/or do not know why black is starting without a queen knight, read this video's description. :)
I thought you were going to set it up where the White King was being checked by the black F pawn after En passant was conducted. In other words, some hypothetical arrangement where the White King is on E2 or G2. (Basically, I thought the pawn would be the checkmating piece...)
I had thought the same situation. And I thought it could actually been done.
On move 66 where is black to move at 7:08 :
Kc2 Rc4
Kd2 Qf4
If Ke2 Qd4
If Kd3 Qd4
Ke2 then any move that don't give check with rook on b8, queen on h1(it has to stay in the 8th rank, or bishop on g7. And white will be forced to move the pawn.
But the only problem here is that white doesn't need to move the pawn 2 squares ahead... :(
Sorry, queen on h1 needs to be there to defend the pawn.
I almost never play en passant captures in OTB games with casual players because I don't want to explain why it isn't cheating.
psilohead lol
I once played a game where after my pawn move, my opponent stopped and said to me, "You know, there's this obscure rule called the en passant..." I then replied to him, "I know, and you can do that if you want." He looked pretty excited to do it just because it's something you hardly ever see. However, after that en passant it was mate in 4, my game. It was pretty funny.
worthy sacrifice
Now do it by giving final check with the actual pawn!
The problem is you can't force the last pawn to move 2 squares, you just have to make the set up and hope
Joaquin Pirotto well in this case the final pawn did have to move both squares in order to block the bishop.
Fudgyboo Read the comment before replying, saves you looking like an idiot.
Joaquin Pirotto what are you talking about? I said that in this case the final white pawn HAD to move both squares. Why are you so mad?
Fudgyboo Yes, but the original comment asked to give checkmate with the actual pawn. I said this could not be forced.
Stop being a smartass and read what you are disagreeing with, then think about it for 5 seconds, and only then reply.
How about delivering mate by castling queenside?
That's way easier
See the game of lasker vs spassky, white could have won by castling queenside
Ive done that
Eric rosen
@@ivancrescenzi7194 Lasker died just a few years after Spassky was born. Lasker vs George Alan Thomas is the game you were likely referring to
Beautiful! This was such a blast to watch, thank you for putting a smile on my face with every upload!
At 6:20 you had it!
Qd3+ Kc1 Bh6+ f4 gxf3#
yep
I noticed it too
This could turn out to be a start of a fun series where you take on these kinds of crazy challenges. I'd definitely watch it.
I'm actually surprised you were able to do that!
Jack Manuel i did it as well, and im only 1000 rating
WOWOWOW -- man, it felt so rewarding seeing that happen!! Good job Jerry :) @ChessNetwork
Thanks Dan, you're the man! :)
Now kiss
unreal amount of skill to get that down
Especially given the time controls. I would have a lot more trouble with the middle game than the endgame, since the endgame is a similar to 2100-2400 rated Lichess puzzles.
Of all of the hundreds of videos I have watched I have to say, this is one of my favorites.
Wow, that's some serious logic, well done!! Who could possibly dislike this?
38 peaple
people who thought it was hack
Those who thought that move was illegal
I think an interesting challenge would be to try to make your opponent's king visit all 64 squares and checkmate him on the last one.
watched that live, very impressive
Jerry the man, the myth, the legend!
helvegen 27
SCOTT STERLING
Frank de Jongh Legend27....
the coolest thing a nerd could possibly do!
Wow, can't believe you didn't notice that there wasn't a queenside knight. Even i didn't notice until i read the description LOL
Way to Go Jerry! Amazing game , love you!!!
That was amazing! But I think he was ready to do it just before he said "I think I'm ready to do it." At 6:22 there's a forcing (I think) line 64. ... Qd3+ 65. Kc1 Bh6+ 66. f4 gxf3# e.p. The situation in game, where the queen gives check on e4 instead of d3, gives the king the option of going to c3 instead of c1. Stockfish conspired a little bit.
get rekt stockfish level 1
XD
Amazing! Really cool video!
My level of anxiety is going up because its only one move to be checkmate
That's really cool
This was fun to try and to see done, very cool idea.
awesome dude, thank-you for your videos.
Try a pawn promotion to a knight to give mate
I think that was the answer to one of the tactics he did on tactics trainer a while back.
That comes up so much in chess puzzles it's not that unexpected any more.
yep it was
I've seen.a game like that
I had it in a game, mate in three and the mate was like that. I missed it in the game and captured my opponents queen Instead
That really showed off some skill! very well played :)
you went for it! wow pretty amazing
Checkmate using knights only (promote pawns to knights)
Winco Foods I've done that, it's fun xD especially when you get like 8 knights (only against super easy computers, never tried it as a challenge)
Winco Foods Hikaru Nakamura did it with 6 knights.
Took me 5 knights on a lv1 ai
@JediNxf7 i did 9 on a 200 ai...
i did it after a couple attempts and its pretty HARD. but at the end of the match your happy and proud that you did it.
If chess were made today: You cannot make that capture because you do not have the "En Passant" Power Card equipped. (Hint: Purchase loot boxes to acquire Power Cards!)
At Minute 6:14: You could have played Qd3+ and Bh6+ to win earlier and with the same idea.
the knight was so tricky even Jerry forgotten about it
totally worth the watch
Can you do a video of the style of your how to solve chess puzzles where you try and solve the Christmas puzzle from lichess?
That was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in chess
That was sick
this was so cool
Nice Mate!
Your level of coolness has just increased.
Holy hell
Nice one Jerry
very cool, Jerry.
That was beautiful. Thank you.
+Killian Defaoite Thanks Killian :) Your logo really stands out. 😄
Senpai noticed me!
I'm a huge fan, Jerry. Thanks for all the work you put in.
And great performance at the spring marathon! 11 hours is legendary!!!
Let's up the ante by requiring the pawn to be the checkmating piece.
good job Jerry!
You sir. Are doing great mind exercises. You remind me of myself.*cries in proud tears*
I about had a stroke watching that checkmate then I saw the title
WOW!
Worth making a UA-cam series with different type of mates against Stockfish 1?
It's funny because I just watched your "greatest endgame puzzle" with the pawns promoting to knights and what not, and I thought to myself "the only thing crazier would be an en passant checkmate on top of it all".
lol at the commenters calling you CheeseNetwork when you kept moving the Queen around to buy time. But hey.. it was perfectly legal to do so.
Amazing!
Damn that was pretty sweet
That was like watching a cat batting a mouse around for 9 minutes before finally eating it.
my mind just exploded
nice touch with the chat !
That was cool, though I was expecting the en passant pawn to be attacking the king.
is it possible to give a smothered mate through promotion of a pawn to a knight... against stockfish 1?
You should try checkmate via castling
My man didn't even realize he was giving Knight odds to a computer, lol.
@chessnetwork 6:12 shouting at the screen Qb3 ... nice video!
I once seen a game in an old book where a very strong player wagered a weak one that he (the stronger) could force the weaker player to mate him. Stalemate and 50-move rule draws were considered a loss. The entire game was well over 100 moves, but the stronger player forced the weak one to give mate by capturing all but one Bishop, pinning it on b8 with K on a8, when K could only move from a8-a7, eventually lifting the pin at just the right time so a check along the a-file forced the B to interpose and give mate. I've tried to do that a few times against my engine, always either mating, stalemating or drawing by 50-move rule. Even saving back pawns to reset the rule eventually failed. You should try it.
A live human would even be harder, it seems to me, as the computer doesn't understand it can win by giving away or blockading its own pieces, but a human could try those tactics.
So you need the king on corner or last line. Block with rocks the 2 lines and with bishop (or Queen) the last room. Later cheak with bishop forces to block by pawn. Very tricky. Cool strategy
very good!
LEGEND
7:56 A wild Scamaz appears
I didn't even realize that there was no queen knight in the starting position.
Brilliant
You're a clever guy, I'm just a mushroom
Would you play the challenge again with both Knight's?
Now this is something new :D
Amazing
HOLY COW!!
Cool video
now do a checkmate via a castle
They're called rooks, dammit!
I think he means the move and not the piece Mr(s). Blueberrydog
yes I meant the move, any idiot can do a mate via a rook
Tokisaki Kurumi we still think that you are no worries
Tokisaki Kurumi
How about checkmate with queen?
end me now
Had to take every single piece. Woof
do promotion to a knight mate next
Holy Hell!
I remember a game I played where I took en passant and the pawn that took gave checkmate.
Assuming that JohnMatt3000 is JohnMadden, He called the solution in the twitch comments. Great job!
Gg awesome and cool dude
Nice! Beautiful en passant checkmate! I was expecting the capturing pawn to give mate directly, but then, in retrospect, 64... Qd3 65.Kc1 Bh6+ 66. f4 gxf4# (e.p.) forces mate faster. Beautiful anyway!
i feel sleepy with this.
imagine if the bot knew your intention and went Kc3 instead
props for doing it in good speed, though I wouldve used 2nd queen to cover c3 and then did Qe2+ force the king to c1 rather than 50-50 luck on if the king would go to c1 vs c3.
Next challenge: Checkmate with 4 knights, but without using your king (he just stays on the edge of the board).
That one isn't that difficult, is it? Well, except for the fact you can't castle, I guess.
at 6:22 you had qd3 kc1 bh3+ f4 gxf3#, which would've been mate a few moves earlier potentially?
holy hell
Now do it without a discovery check.
I could have got check mate 3 times, few moves you missed buddy but nice game (or was the goal initially en passant?)
Edit: I realise that was the initial goal, that was so cool!
amateur in chess question: why would the rook jump from its home position to D7 in front of king? Where do I find this answer?
In boxing (or probably any combat sport), this would be called 'showboating'.
This was painful to watch. He had the board under control but weaved the king around the board. But maybe it's not as easy as it looks
Jerry on 3:07 you could have taken Pawn on F2 with a check,If king H3,U can take pawn H5 with a check and ur winning. No puns
Is he setting the level and move that he is training to win by in the beginning? I'm a noob
I have a tutorial on how to actually force it, and you only need 2 queens
This video is very pintresting
Me: I Just beat the AI on Intermediate level! (head high, chest out)
This Guy: I manipulated the whole game to checkmate by En Passant...
