  • Vince Russo is still in shock as he joins Dr. Chris Featherstone for this edition of Writing with Russo. He joins the wrestling world in paying tribute to Bray Wyatt, who unexpectedly passed away prematurely at the age of 36. Russo considers Wyatt to be the greatest character in the history of WWE, through all his iterations. He goes on to say that he hopes Wyatt knew just how good he was. The man even remembers some DM exchanges with the WWE star just to cheer him up.
It's a sad, somber edition of Writing with Russo.

They couldnt. Bray had pre-existing heart issues that were managed but took time off a lot because he had to. One example they didnt want to have Goldberg squash the Fiend like he did but he had to limit his schedule due to his pre-existing heart condition. When he contracted Covid, like many people with pre-existing conditions would be exacerbated. Unfortunately, Covid really messed him up. Its tragic.

This is such sad news, so sorry for Bray Wyatt's entire family. We have truly lost one of the greats, no doubt! This man was an absolute genius and as Vince says, his creativity and talent was way beyond what WWE knew what to do with. I always thought he should have had a very long run with the WWE title as the fiend until someone could finally mow him down! God rest his soul, there will never be another like him. Growing up on the Undertaker and Kane, I feel that Bray Wyatt indeed is right up there with them, and was possibly better. We will miss you Bray and thank you for the memories Brother! ✨🙏✨

They could have build an entire cinematic style of matches around the Fiend as well, and probably a ton of other ideas. Bray could probably think of a way to connect Bo Dallas and his previous characters that would make sense. Miles ahead of WWE

I dont agree with Russo alot but he's absolutely correct. This whole thing really hurts because he was so damn talented. He was on a different level than anyone I've ever seen, even the undertaker. We all knew taker wasn't really a dead man. Bray's "gimmick" seemed as tho that was really him. I've never seen anything like it. He enthralled himself into being Bray Wyatt. His psychology was nonpareil frfr. Even with him dropping hints in his promo for a long time. He added a word that didn't belong in every one of his promos that created a message. He did that for months! Who does that? This man's mind was incredible. The whole hints with the white rabbit and the qr codes. Just brilliant. I don't normally get emotional when wrestlers/famous people pass away but I dropped a tear when I heard the news. I feel horrible for his family BUT I also feel horrible for the wrestling business. Bray didn't even reach his final form. I hope he knew how beloved he was. I gotta go back and watch his return. That still gives me chills watching the love we gave him. Rest easy, Bray 🙏🏿

There's a lot of great characters that'll be difficult to label Bray as being the greatest - There's the Undertaker, Ultimate Warrior, Mick Foley's or Jericho's characters. But Bray's case is certainly different. In spite of it being WWE's worst era for characters, storylines and overall creative entertainment, Bray was still able to navigate through all those hurdles, continually reinventing himself and being able to hold the audience's interest, which speaks volume to how great he was (just imagine him being able to exist during a different era, where WWE had the talent around for him to excel). For me, he was one of just a few (2 - 3) that was worth watching. Anyone who like me is a "casual" fan, knew Bray was capable of so much more, and it was always frustrating to see a talent you knew could and should have been so much bigger, not being able to be properly utilised because of WWE's creative limitations. Dying either in or before his prime only adds to his aura too.
The Undertaker - arguably the greatest of characters, has come back for that "1 more match", we've beared witness to the 'Phenom' screwing up, and watching his last matches in a state of caution and anxiety because of the known risk of something not going correctly. Mick Foley we've seen him turn into this woke liberal at times online and stand behind some controversial political topics that you'd never expect from a guy who leaped off of a Cell. Bray, fortunately, will never have any of those blemishes. He is the Van Gogh or Tupac of wrestling

The passing of Windham Rotunda/Bray Wyatt hit everybody hard and naturally there's going to be much sentiment about that. W/ that being said, and though it's just wrestling, one ought take emotion out of the equation when attempting to assert and then validate by explanation, on why the Bray Wyatt character goes down as the best character in wrestling and they should do so because many wrestling fans are intilectually honest when it comes to wrestling.
There's only one Undertaker and The Undertaker will always be the greatest character in all of professional wrestling and that's the way it is when you take emotion out of the equation and that's honest. Bray Wyatt was a very rare and unique character but the assertion that that character was the best in all of wrestling quite simply is a dishonest argument imo. We saw 3 versions of Wyatt the same way we saw 3 faces of Foley and Foley's 3 faces had way more range and depth than Wyatt's.
Foley was a better performer than Wyatt and that's truly what this entire talking point is about, performance. Foley had more natural charisma and Foley was also a much better in ring worker than Wyatt who was known for matches more theatrical and in truth not often well received. It's a sad lost indeed and absolutely. However, needless pandering is needless pandering.
    RIP Bray Wyatt

Yes, it's sad and unfortunate that he died prematurely, but to call Bray Wyatt "the greatest character in WWE's history" is a ridiculous, lip service-serving reach! He was polarizing at best. You either liked what he brought or hated it. There's no middle ground. Many found his stuff post-Wyatt Family eye-rolling gobbledygook more suited to a Rob Zombie movie than pro wrestling. He'll never be The Undertaker and he certainly didn't have the universal impact of a Hulk Hogan. He wasn't even on the level of a 'Million Dollar Man' Ted DiBiase. THOSE were the best characters. Wyatt was a Waylon Mercy ripoff turned horror-themed stretch of credibility who had his place amongst a certain set of fan. Windham Rotunda from all accounts was a wonderful guy and yes, he should still be with us. That's as far as it goes.

I'm not watching the video because who really cares what that guy thinks bro, but based on the title of this video I must say he's wrong. No disrespect to Bray because I loved a lot of the stuff he did and I think he could have been the greatest character if the Bray Wyatt/The Fiend characters materialized the way he envisioned them. The main issue is he changed the gimmick too many times in a short period of time and I don't think anyone really knew who Bray Wyatt was or who he was actually trying to be when he had his last run that ended back in January.
For lack of a better word, it became a mess and I think most people would agree. Everyone knows by this point that the original incarnation of Bray Wyatt wasn't so much a rip-off of Waylon Mercy but Bray admitted that Mercy was the main inspiration of the Wyatt character so you can't really say Bray is the greatest character when it's just a newer version of a previous character. Obviously the Bray Wyatt character was different in many ways and Mercy barely existed in the first place but if Mercy never existed then it's very possible that Bray Wyatt as we know him would never have existed either. I do think the Firefly Funhouse stuff was incredibly creative and revolutionary but I feel it didn't mesh 100% with The Fiend character and it eventually became a convoluted mess at the end, especially with the inclusions of Bliss and Uncle Howdy. That was very unfortunate too because I truly believe Bray had a greater vision for his characters but for whatever reason the final product didn't live up to his expectations and his last storyline will probably be remembered for giving LA Knight his big break instead of the Uncle Howdy stuff.
The Undertaker is hands down the greatest character ever because it was completely original and unlike anything we had ever seen before and Kane is the 2nd greatest character ever and the biggest reason is because we got to go through the entire journeys of both characters and unfortunately with Bray Wyatt we will never get to see that.
I compare the Bray Wyatt character to Mankind due to the fact that both guys played their characters perfectly and both got their respective characters over but at the same time both guys outplayed their characters to the extent that they really didn't need the characters anymore, with the main exception being that Bray didn't want to let go of his character/vision and ended up straying too far from the original path. Foley primarily used the Mankind character during his entire run from 96-2000 and was in character during his reign as World Champion but he also added other dynamics to his character like Dude Love and Cactus Jack, just like Bray did with The Fiend character and this comparison to Mick Foley was probably his biggest motivation when he chose the mandible claw as The Fiends finisher.
