This is super helpful! I'm an architecture student and have to use matboard for my models and it's been an absolute pain to cut to the right shapes for my models! I've been considering getting a cricut to help with that and so far I'm convinced!
I love this, Angie! My husband volunteers at an art gallery, and I know that matting and framing is always so expensive. I love that you can be creative with this and customize your mat designs.
I succeeded at my first project, thank you! oh, greeting card I failed. Vinyl I failed. I actually could not get the transfer tape to peel off. I was so frustrated. Oh, and I have never commented on a video before and I watch tons. I'm very experienced with photoshop and I fell like the cricut is bringing it all together for me.. Thank you
I love the tip about checking the cut before clicking to "eject" the mat. I will definitely be using that trick because reinserting it to re-cut never quite works
Great video! I’ve haven’t used my knife blade yet, maybe I’ll give this a try. Also in a future video could you explain how and when to use the X Y feature in design space?
I had this idea this morning that i can cut matboards for my artworks with my cricut, low an behold i found this gem of a video thank you so much Angie...lol I do have a question, what would you say that the largest single mat opening (inside cut) would be? There are lots of information about how to die-cut outside of the perameters of the cricut..though I do think this has gotten easier with new updates ive noticed. Id like to be able to cut mats for a 11x14 would this be possible??..I keep trying to envision it but I can't quite get there...thank you so much for any help you can offer!
Angie, Thanks for your videos, I've found them very helpful. How often (if ever) do you calibrate your knife blade, and have you found that to be beneficial? There is considerable slop between the edges of a mat at the mat guides on a Maker. Do you try to position your mat halfway between the guides, or hold the mat all the way to the left? It's not that important for large projects, but little things like dog tags can be way off. Unfortunately, there's no calibration for an engraving attachment. I'm surprised that Cricut doesn't have a pre-cut calibration step.
I've been looking for something to cut mat board. Question, which machines can do this, and can I also use it to cut letters, or a custom graphic on mat board? Thanks!
its great that it can cut through, but matboard typically is cut at 45 degree angle. is it possible to do that on this machine or is 90 degrees all it can do?
So I followed the instructions for cutting a matte board. I calibrated my blade knife twice before using for the first time. I made two mattes, exactly the same. the first one, I had precut the outside but noticed that it was slightly smaller (by like a very tiny margin) than the grids on my mat so I used a slightly bigger piece for the second matte. The first matte made no damage to my mat but the second matte cut all the way through my $30 standard grip mat on the second matte and I don't understand why! Am I going to need to buy a brand new mat every time I want to cut a matte?!
Hi, I have my machine coming tomorrow! I bought it for mat board and fabric. I needle point and was hoping I can outline the shape of project to cut mat. Is there a way I can do my own design? Thank you! I really enjoyed the video as I never seen or hsed one before.
Definitely! Do you have the design digitally? Or can you take a picture? Then you can upload it and you should be able to use the tools there to just get an outline basically.
Can I ask how long it took to cut the 4 ply mat board? I wasn't sure if you had sped up the video to conserve time or not. I have a project with many pieces and am trying figure out how much time it takes to cut the pieces. I was going to do the project in wood but I would have taken me months to cut it out.
Is it possible to cut a double opening mat where each window is a different size I want a scenic image in one window and a quote or saying in the lower smaller opening Thanks
Hi Angie! I was wondering if you wanted to cut a bigger size mat board for a picture, I would need a size 11.75 by 15.75 and was wondering how to do that on cricut and do you know if they make mat board that big to purchase? Thanks.
I wouldn't go over 11.5 inches wide on the Cricut as you will need an area for your star wheels to run. They make mat board in HUGE sheets that you can cut yourself.
Hi , love the video , but I was wondering what I could use to make a photo frame mat with the explore air 2 plz, (getting one for christmas :-) ) , one of my projects is a 18th frame mat for my daughter , would thick card work ? Thank you x
I am wanting to cut out words in a mat to frame vacation pictures. Any suggestions of which font would work best and which machine would be the best to use?.
Hello Angie, may I know how thick is this Mat board -4 ply in your video? because I have problem cutting the 1.4mm-1.5mm board, failed many times, not sure to use Art board setting or chip board setting. I can't find Mat Board 4-ply in my material setting (Cricut maker). Thanks!!
Hi Angie, I a, brand new and just for the Explore Air 2 for Christmas. Can this be done on the Explore Air 2? If so, what type of blade do I need to purchase. I only got one blade with my cricut
This video is several years old so they may have renamed it. Or if you have other things in your design that are not cut lines, the Cricut will remove materials that it thinks are not compatible.
Cricut claims the maker can cut up to 4 mm matboard. I would stick with 2. 2mm is 12 passes, 1.5 mm is 8. The duration is going to depend on the size and complexity of the cut. Also 3/4" is the smallest shape it can cut with this blade, and try to keep the width at a minimum of 1/4" or a pencil.
Hi Angie, I’m using maker 3 and matboard 4 ply doesn’t appear in the list, only matboard but this option don’t cut trough. I need to make holes. Help!!
It could be a wide variety of reasons from your design to Cricut changing the names of certain materials. I would just find something close. Art/illustration board is a good one for this.
I've been looking for something to cut mat board. Question, which machines can do this, and can I also use it to cut letters, or a custom graphic on mat board? Thanks!

This is awesome! Make sure you are not using strong grip transfer tape. That stuff is only for glitter vinyl and won't come off of regular vinyl!
I love the tip about checking the cut before clicking to "eject" the mat. I will definitely be using that trick because reinserting it to re-cut never quite works
Yes! Definitely recut BEFORE you eject!
I love the frame. You can use those scraps for cake or cupcake toppers.
Great idea!!
This is a great idea, and appreciate the video showing us how to do it!
Glad it was helpful!
Always brilliant thank you Angie!
So helpful thank you! 🙏
Wish there was a way to cut a beveled mat cutout using our makers. Thank you!!!
Me toooo!
Yeah i’m the first who likes 😂. Greetz from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Very helpful, thanks!

You should be able to go up to a 12 x 24 board with a cut size of 11.5 x 23.5 inches.
I like your video, but I was wondering if you have a video on printing patterns onto the matboard?
Matboard is too thick to print on - at least for my printer.

I never do actually. Just when I purchased it. Yes the engraving is tough! I would hold all the way to the left for optimal alignment!
Hello, Thank you for those great tutorials !! But can we cut foam board (3mm) with Cricut and knife blade ? Thanks 🥰🥰
No. It is too thick.
@@AngieHolden Thank you for your answer
I've been looking for something to cut mat board. Question, which machines can do this, and can I also use it to cut letters, or a custom graphic on mat board? Thanks!
This is with the Maker or Maker 3. It can cut any graphic however small details or intricate designs will be tough to do.
When you said it did 8 passes..do you have to run it 8times??? Or were you saying the Cricut decided to run through 8 times around.
The Cricut will do that for you.
its great that it can cut through, but matboard typically is cut at 45 degree angle. is it possible to do that on this machine or is 90 degrees all it can do?
You can only do 90 degree.

When you use the knife blade, always check your cuts. I start pausing my machine about half way through just to see if the cut is all the way through.
Hi, I have my machine coming tomorrow! I bought it for mat board and fabric.

And what’s the biggest piece of mat board you can cut in that one?
The mat is just regular 4 ply from Michaels or something? Thanks!!
Yes this mat board is just standard. And it would be a 12 x 24 max cut size.
@@AngieHolden thank you so much!!!!!
Nice video, Is there a knife we can use to cut at 45 degrees angle like professional framers?
NO there is not.
Does this give a beveled edge?
No it does not.
Can I ask how long it took to cut the 4 ply mat board? I wasn't sure if you had sped up the video to conserve time or not. I have a project with many pieces and am trying figure out how much time it takes to cut the pieces. I was going to do the project in wood but I would have taken me months to cut it out.
It doesn't take too long but I don't leave the entire time in the video just for the sake of your time watching it.
May I ask where you got the template for the cutouts? I love the traditional look to them.
I just used shapes in Design Space.
Thanks so much... Just saw this, lol. BTW, could one use the machine to draw (or etch?) a border around the cut out?
Does the cricut 3 have the capability to print with markets on a cut matboard?
You can draw with markers yes.
Is it possible to cut a double opening mat where each window is a different size
I want a scenic image in one window and a quote or saying in the lower smaller opening
Thanks
Can you cut each opening from a different sheet? Then it would work.
Can I cut this using my Cricut Explore Air 2?
Not that I know of.
When I cut mat board on my Maker with the knife blade, it shreds the mat board. Why might this happen?
It may be that the matboard is moving slightly on your mat. I would stick it down well. Also it will not work with really intricate cuts!
I dont have the mat board option in the materials list
Make sure you only have cut lines in your project, you are on a computer and not a mobile device, and you have a Maker or Maker 3 machine.
Hi Angie! I was wondering if you wanted to cut a bigger size mat board for a picture, I would need a size 11.75 by 15.75 and was wondering how to do that on cricut and do you know if they make mat board that big to purchase? Thanks.

Try kraft board. It is a bit thicker and will cut file with the Explore Air 2.
@@AngieHolden Thank you x
IS THE BALSA WOOD CUTTING BLADE THE SAME AS THE ONE YOU USED FOR THIS PROJECT?
Yes it is!
Is there a way to cut a mat that’s 11x15?
There are 12x24 mats for the Cricut that would work for this.
I am wanting to cut out words in a mat to frame vacation pictures. Any suggestions of which font would work best and which machine would be the best to use?.
Definitely a Maker or Maker 3 and the knife blade. Now sure on font choices though!
what specifically is the setting for mat board 4 ply, when I did a search under all materials I didn't find it. What specifically is the pressure etc?
If you have maker chosen, the mat board 4 ply should be an option.
Will a Cricut explore air 2 cut mat board. If so where do you find that style on Cricut design space.
NO it will not. The knife blade does not work on the Explore Air 2.
Is it possible to cut at an angle/bevel like a traditional picture mat? Or does the Cricut always cut straight in?
It always cuts straight.
Thanks!!
Try the heavy chipboard setting and watch it carefully to make sure it doesn't cut all the way through.
Would it be possible to also cut out a word in matboard also?
Yes you can! Just choose your font carefully as small details don't work well.
Hi Angie, I a, brand new and just for the Explore Air 2 for Christmas. Can this be done on the Explore Air 2? If so, what type of blade do I need to purchase. I only got one blade with my cricut
No. This is only for the Maker.

I have a maker 3 and don’t have matboard 4 ply when I lookup the material 🤔
This video is several years old so they may have renamed it. Or if you have other things in your design that are not cut lines, the Cricut will remove materials that it thinks are not compatible.
Which circuit is this one?
This will work with a Cricut Maker or Cricut Maker 3 and the knife blade.
Can you apply gold lettering onto matboard with the cricut maker?
The foil transfer tool should work for that!
Whats the widest mat board a Cricut can cut? You also mentioned 8 passes, so how long did that take?
The largest would be 12 x 24. The length of time will depend on the complexity of your design. These just took a few minutes.

Are you on mobile by chance? I am not understanding why you don't have the thicker options. You should have a heavy chipboard setting.
Where can i find quatrefoil shape to cut out?
Can the circuit machine cut designs on a 16x20 matboard?
Maximum size would be 11.5 inches by 23.5 inches.
@@AngieHolden Thank you for responding.
can you engrave into a mat board?
I have done it with the scoring wheel with success. You can see that here: ua-cam.com/video/UrGMSMH1bws/v-deo.html
Is the knife blade that I have.
Hello, where do we buy that board?
I get mine at Hobby Lobby in the framing section or order from Amazon.
