    I love that he missed a shift at about 0:45! You could do that in those days, even the best drivers did once in a while.

      Yep. I think Jo Siffert accidentally shifted from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th down the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans 1970 in the middle of the night, it blew up the transmission and put them and the 917K out of the race!

      Happened all the time. It was a combination of no gate and long and heavy linkages which were notorious for being imprecise.

    I would love to drive this over pretty much any car. Truly beautiful singing engine, amazing tight looking gear box, RWD, no power steering (I'm guessing). ENough power that you really gotta work the old girl, be patient with the throttle (leg powered traction control). What an analog joy this would be

      There are some videos of Bob Earle driving a 512M at Le Mans and a 512S at Monza. Bob’s a pretty good driver. I remember him from the 1980s.

    According to the ACO speedtrap figures, a Ferrari 512M was the fastest car on the straight in qualifying for the 1971 Le Mans. It was clocked at 359 km/h (222 mph). Don't know which one it was but probably the NART one driven by Donohue/Hobbs.

    • @Quadrant14
      @Quadrant14 9 років тому +1

      TheThirdMan possibly could have been a NART one driven by Tony Adamowizch {sorry about the spelling Tony}

      Quadrant14 Hi mate. I am excited to tell you -
      *Mystery solved!*
      As we suspected there is a discrepancy between the theoretical top speed and the achieved top speed for the 917. I suspected clutch slippage and while I was close, I was wrong. It can be very neatly explained by a phenomenon known as tyre slip:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slip_(vehicle_dynamics)
      So, let's assume a ratio of about 1.1/1 and factor in some tyre slip.
      224.4 (actual speed) x 1.1 = 246.84 (claimed speed from gearing charts). It also tallies with Derek Bell's claim that he was pulling X,000 RPM in top gear and that meant 246 mph. He wasn't factoring tyre slip into the equation.
      Cheers!

      Quadrant14 I want to stress that it's an _honest_ mistake. I said somewhere else that I didn't believe any of these guys was lying. Now that I've found a possible explanation which fits the numbers so neatly, the discrepancy becomes entirely understandable. Cheers!

      TheThirdMan yes no problem, it is a good explanation as well...anyone can make errors depending on what actual information is available to them at any one time. You found good info too!

    Does anyone know the mechanism behind those classic RPM counters? It's funny to see the neddle wobble around when there's a sudden "BAM" after upshifting and going full throttle, and im quite curious as to how such gauge worked, in mechanical terms. Anyone?

    • @jdogrulez5014
      @jdogrulez5014 8 років тому +1

      Don't quote me on this but I think it may work based off something along the lines of how much electricity the engine is producing so when it is at idle there is little electricity passing through the rpm display and when he shifts the power/rpm drops and suddenly comes back on, and since it is electric trinity driven the power somewhat surges. But I am in no way a well informed person, just my theory.

    • @mach5jeep
      @mach5jeep 8 років тому +1

      +João Agnelo Given the year of the vehicle I'm assuming it's a mechanically driven gauge. It's a very delicate mechanism and probably has little or no damping built into it. Without the vibration damping like modern gauges have the needle is allowed to 'freewheel' when shocked by a sudden change in RPM or a hard shift. Much like the rear wheel on a bicycle will when you stop pedaling.

    • @owenmerrick2377
      @owenmerrick2377 7 років тому +1

      Something to do with a 'drag cup', and eddy currents induced by a magnet rotating inside an aluminum cup (inside the tach); driven by a flexible cable, gear driven from the engine. No damping. Best engine sound, love the harmonics at higher flat out RPM!!

    Dampening?. Up through the 70's, all they had to use was mechanical tachs which were flaky under hard acceleration. Even up into the 80's dirt bikes and motorcycles had mechanical tachometers.Works basically the same as the old mechanical speedometers. No matter any refurbishing it will always do what your seeing.

    Naah, they weren't actually that bad back in the day! What usually happens is, when they go old the internal dampening in the instrument goes haywire. I have an old '71 motorcycle, and the damping is gone in those instruments aswell.
    I bet a refurbished instrument wouldn't do it.
    Magnificient car though! :D

    Hi Guy,
    go to the video of jurgen barth driving the 936 around the Sarthe in practice for the 77 race if you wanna see something incredible,
    936 turbo is soo fast its hard to concentrate at that speed,
    Jurgen was probably doing about 220 on the mulsanne.
    Incredible.

    No he isn't. Upshifting is easy (though he completely misses a shift at 49 seconds. On downshifts, he's not rev-matching properly (and sometimes he doesn't rev match at all and is dumping the clutch), and yes, racing gearboxes are not easy to shift. That's why we all go to racing school and learn on non-synchromesh gearboxes. You should hear crisp clean blips of the throttle on EVERY downshift.

    • @AmericasChoice

    its no better than the 512 all the porsche had was a lighter desighn and full support from John Wyer engineering.
    the poor 512 had to suffice with private owner's,
    Enzo didnt give it factory support.
    it was the time that Enzo was trying to support the sport's car and F--1 team at the same time, and something had to give.

      The refined 512M did not yet exist..
      SEAFAC Ferrari would concentrate on the 312PB 1971 on...

      GULF Wyer was NOT Porsche Stuttgart!
      Tho very well supported..
