The princes being depressed after seeing a pretty girl is a mood
They weren't depressed because of their beauty, they were depressed because they thought they'd never see them again.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 understood, but to be fair, I get depressed looking at pretty girls too.
@@sarahbellee.bradburn8760 that's a you problem mate
@@velocityraptor9270 maybe insecurity...?
@@RedRoseSeptember22 I respectfully disagree. They were depressed because they could never have her. They were princes they could have any woman but the only woman they really wanted to marry was one they couldn't have. I think that's why that one guy mentioned in this comment section he gets depressed looking at pretty girls too because he knows he can never have them.
Honestly, the moral I was getting was, you gotta do what you gotta do to save yourself because no one else will.
It seems that way considering not even the fairy godmother in the primary version does practically nothing to help Donkeyskin.
And also doing what you need to do and sacrificing a prominent and prosperous life isn't always easy but it pays off in the end.

To be honest when he said that it,kinda hurt.
"This last story is the most messed up one of the bunch." WHAT DO YOU MEAN WASN'T THE FIRST ONE AND THE BEAR STORY BAD ENOUGH?!?!?!?
IDK man atleast nobody else died (except the animal dress). Last version, infanticide and an entire war was included.
How is the moral not "don't try to commit incest". This one really deserves the VERY!
Because anyone who WOULD commit incest will not be stopped by a fable. Better to focus on warning potential victims.
I always thought the "three impossible dresses thing" meant that it was impossible for a fabric to match the natural changes of the sky, the moon and the sun:
-The sky is ever changing, it's not always blue (sunset, dawn, stormy days, night skies, cloudy days...)
-The Moon is constantly changing in her different phases and different colours like the Red moon or a lunar eclipse even.
-Likewise, the Sun shifts its light during the day, it can appear golden or pearly or orange/red, and its light can shine differently...
That's why I thought it would be impossible to make just a dress with each of these natural elements.
No. It's really as simple as what he's described: textile making in the original era of these stories. Context is important.
Same, in fact the versions I’ve read basically said as much (ie, _a dress woven out of yarn that sparkles as brilliantly as the stars, that glimmers and glistens as pearly/silver as the moon, that glows as bright & golden as the sun,_ etc….)
This impossibility as you describe is shown in the French film "Donkey Skin" with Delphine Seyreig and Catherine Deneuve. (I'm probably misspelling those names.) The dresses are displayed with startling special effects that stand up rather well to the test of time.
That actually is in an interesting theory. I always thought it was due to the material and the construction for such color. Like the amount of silk, or even using actual gems, gold, or silver.
The Wolf Among us anyone? That's where I first heard about this story. Honestly had no idea it was a real fable though.
Almost everything in Fables/Wolf Among Us are real fairy tales
@@dejaypage1575 Ah. Very cool. ^^

This sounds more like the _exceedingly_ messed up origins of Donkey Skin.
Well, incest is a major taboo fore obvious reasons, so it makes sense that people have made lot’s of dark stories about how horrible it is.
Idk, back in those times, incest was pretty common, especially among the royalty. Tho even then parents/children sexual relationships weren't most people's idea of happily ever after, I imagine.
@@thestarsburnedmysoul8575 the royals yes. They also did lodes of other things that peasants would get killed for. The church and the judges in the Middle Ages weren’t allowed to prosecute the royal family.

Another s tier would defiantly have to be 'The Children Who Played Slaughter.' It's an Brother's Grimm tale, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was based off a true event.
That one was so fd up, but the juniper tree was worse imo
Huh, and I thought Donkey Skin was an obscure tale, but I certainly knew about it before. Didn’t know about this one until now, though.
Huh, that one isn't in my copy of the complete collection. According to a quick google search since it was taken out for being too graphic. Funny considering Fitcher's Bird is still in there. The Juniper tree one was pretty messed up to.
I first read that story when I was 8 and that messed me up. I was afraid of playing with people, in fear we’d play butcher, and I’d be made the pig.
Having played Telltale Games' Fables story, I know where this one is going.
Speaking of it, do you know if season 2 is going to happen and if yes, is there a date yet?
@@wendellcassio948 everything I heard makes it seems like it's in limbo . . . Especially with a show in the works 👀

I see that incest vibe, almost anime like. And even a little beastiality in the one-story. Yeah Disney would have a hard time with these ones.
naw, disney would just make her use a brown cloak with an animal friend on her back, and have the animal friend lead her to the prince in some way, before being killed off,. The dad would wanna kill her instead of screw her tho, and hed probably be taken in by gaurds at the end. never underestimate disney bro
Heh,
Anime had Beaststars, Disney has Zootopia
If they can make stories like sun, moon and Talia aka sleeping beauty child friendly, I wouldn't be surprised if they could retell this story without traumatizing our kids 4 life!
Meanwhile, Jim Henson already did it, though the impression I get from Wikipedia implies the Creature Shop was not part and parcel with the Muppets.
Whachoo mean? Their entire empire is built on these type of stories, they just whitewash/remix the facts to make them family friendly
My mouth is stuck open in horror and disbelief.
This story was disturbing.

There’s an Egyptian folk tale called Juleidah that’s basically this story but with an anklet
wgat are your resources? I feel this is very wrong. I have never heard of this.
@@EverythingEverywhereAllOver In the middle of anywhere a king had a wife whom he loved and a daughter who was the light of his eyes. Before the princess reached womanhood, the queen grew ill and died. The king mourned for one year as he sat by her tomb. Eventually he called upon a matchmaker, and told her that he wished to marry again. He took the anklet from his deceased wife and told the matchmaker he would marry the foot the anklet fit. The matchmaker searched throughout the kingdom but found no single girl whom the anklet would fit. Finally, the anklet slipped onto a princess' foot. This princess agreed to marry the king without knowing who she was to marry.[2] The night before the wedding, the princess asked the minister's daughter why so much talk filled the palace. The princess bribed her with her golden bangle, so the minister's daughter told her that the bridegroom was her father.
The princess turned pale then sent everyone away and escaped. She first went to the tanner's home and gave him a handful of gold. She requested him to make her a suit of leather from head to toe; she left when it was completed. In the morning to king entered the bridal chamber to find that the princess had left. Soldiers at every gate asked if she had seen the king's daughter and she replied:
My name is Juleidah for my coat of skins
My eyes are weak, my sight is dim
My ears are deaf, I cannot hear
I care for no one far or near
Juleidah ran until she collapsed. She passed out and a slave girl noticed her. The slave girl called upon her queen to show her the great pile of leather outside of her palace. They asked her who she was and the princess said her refrain once more. She was invited to join the servants and slaves. The queen's son noticed her and wanted to ask her hand in marriage. He prince asked Juleidah where she was from and she replied that she was from the land of the paddles and the ladles so the prince decided to travel there. Without the prince noticing, Juleidah slipped his ring off his hand. At the palace, Juleidah wanted to help the cook but the cook was reluctant. Eventually she was given a piece of dough to shape and she placed the prince's ring inside of it. For the prince's trek, he was given the bread holding the ring. Once he discovered it he ordered everyone to turn back. The two wed shortly after.
The king put the matchmaker in chains. He searched from city to city until he reached the city where Juleidah resided. When the king reached the palace, Juleidah invited them in. She gave them food and a place to stay. Juleidah revealed to her father that she was his daughter. After it was revealed that Juleidah was the princess, the matchmaker was thrown into a ravine. The king gifted Juleidah and the prince, half of the kingdom and they lived happily ever after.[3]
@@m.z1256 yes, this is from Wikipedia. This is the only source I could find and I couldn't find a thing about the writer, and it's an American publication. I wouldn't be surprised if it was all nonsense and lies. This story doesn't have roots, and if it really exists, it definitely isn't Egyptian.
@@EverythingEverywhereAllOver i kinda agree
I have a request for a story, when I was little my teacher told a story called (sorry if the title is wrong but from what I remember) ‘Flowers an Salamanders’ what I remember about the story was about two girls. Their mother spoiled one while abused the other. The abused one goes to fetch water and comes across a old woman begging for food. The girl gives her what little food she has and fetches the old woman water. The old woman was so taken by her kindness she said ‘Every time you speak may a beautiful flower or precious stone fall from your lips’ the girl doesn’t believe her at first but when she goes home to tell her story boom flowers and jewels fall from her mouth. The mother sends the spoiled one to get the same treatment but as you can guess that doesn’t happen. She insults and belittles the old lady and when she talks; salamanders and toads come out. That’s what I can remember, granted I learned this story in kindergarten, if your for it why not do this story?
I just did a google search and found the story is called “Diamonds and Toads” well as I stated before I couldn’t remember the title just the plot
The moral of the story: beat your children.
There's many versions from different cultures with the same teaching moment
Edit: children encountering an old hag or something and depending in their treatment of her, determined what happened to each. Different stories and different endings, but the same moral
Yeah. I've read one where instead of an old woman, it's a couple of dwarves. The nice girl has coins fall out of her mouth and her sister(s) has/have toads fall out of their mouth
@@cherokeewolf6104 so there are variations

"All Kinds of Fur" is also known as "Thousandfurs"
Remember in The Co!or Purple when Oprah said what it was like to be the only girl in a house full of men and how she had to fight all the time.
I swear the first part of this fairytale it's absolutely creepy
There is an episode of Jim Henson's "The Storyteller" called "Sapsorrow" that mixes together and adapts elements of "All kinds of furs", "Doralice" and "Donkeyskin". How about the six swans/ravens story next?
Word. That was where I heard the story there as well.
Me too, I was wondering if anybody else would have seen The Storyteller. As he talked, the scenes played in my head
At least in that one, the king really isn't so keen on marrying his daughter, but the deathbed vow is sacred in his country and he feels bound by it. And by the end, he's kicked the bucket and isn't around to cause any more trouble.
I was just about to type it when I happened upon your comment...👍🏾
Same. I love Him Henson's 'Storyteller', and I love the story of Sapsorrow. That's why I was wondering if he was going to mention it, but this is better!
Haven't had a folklore explained in a minute
There was a French movie about this tale with Catherine Deneuve, Peau d'Ane, I think is in UA-cam with english subtitles. It's beautiful, I highly recommend it!
He got me weak when he said “I know, no one skipped the ad right?”
Yeah
Finally! You analysed Donkeyskin! I have the original Charles Perreault version. That story has been disturbing me since childhood. That and Blue beard. Not a lot of people know about Donkeyskin though... Wonder why that is? Ha ha ha!

I would love to see more messed up origins of Japanese mythologies and Japanese urban legends because some of them are really messed up and tragic but are very intriguing.
Also Donkeyskin's story sounds a lot like the real story of St Dymphna (patron saint of mental illness and incest victims). The difference between the two is that while Donkeyskin got a happy ending, Dymphna didn't.
No , let’s stay with Eastern Europe and Western European stories.
@@georgetrevino3532why not? asian folklore is so interesting and diverse with the amount of countries
Deerskin has been one of my two favorite books for two decades. I wouldn’t call it a snuff film fairytale, lol, but it certainly is dark. In fact, my dog, a sighthound, is named Lissar after the heroine. Thanks for covering it!! I was very excited to see it!
When he said snuff film I immediately thought he's never read it because it is nowhere near that. Tragic and dark? Yes. Snuff film? No.
@@JenniferRodriquez Plus I’m pretty sure someone has to die and stay dead for it to even begin to qualify 😂 The dark tragedy in it is that it IS realistic. These things DO happen, which is why we’ve been writing stories about them since we could write. I’ve also heard some people describe it as a horror book, which I take issue with as well. It’s a book where some horrible things happen, but it’s ABOUT overcoming and healing from these very realistic scenarios. If you stripped away the fantasy setting, it’s a story far, far too common. The main “fantasy” element, I’ve always felt, is that she’s believed at the end, sigh.
I’ve never heard of this tale…
This has to be one of the most disturbing fairy tales ever!!
Um... I know worse. :)
@@gwencote957 Really? Which ones?
@@hodonyassin9760 They are Grimm's... emm... one with the evil goat, one with the cut-off hands, one with bad child, who was annoying, then dies, then was annoying in grave, so his mother must dig him off, punish him and take him back to the grave. And also grimm's Rampunzel is also worse then donkeyskin.
(sorry for errors, my english is bad)
@@gwencote957 The most disturbing for me is Sleeping Beauty. I mean the original tale. The princess was basically raped and impregnated while she was sleeping and when she woke up and searched for the father, the king's wife gets jealous, cooks the children and makes her husband eat them. And I think Sleeping Beauty was accused of being a witch and was sentenced to be burnt at the stake. European fairytales are just medieval torture porn
@@NoxAtlas Oh I forgot her :) Yes. And blood, violence, death and another interesting thinks. Welcome to the fairytale! Don't step over path and make your weapons ready!
I liked Deerskin, for reasons admittedly skewed heavily towards "sighthounds are awesome" and "Ossin is a cinnamon roll" and "Lissar is an iconic fictional survivor." That said: you are not wrong about it.
Ooh, a VERY messed up tale. This oughtta be good
YAY! FINALLY! This has been the only tale I requested since you've covered already many stories so I'm so happy this video was made. I read this when I was a kid and always wondered how messed up it actually was since, you know, when I read it, it was part of a "children's book" so it was quite light XD
I had never heard of this story before
I'd like to see Disney try to clean up this story.
I honestly don't think it would be that hard. They'd just turn the king into her godfather or a visiting king to tone down the incest... Without that, this could be a hundred other fairy tales.
There’s already an animated film based on this. The king is bewitched by an evil sorceress and he becomes obsessed with his daughter.
I somewhat knew this story as a kid by the title “Princess Furball”. More of a children’s version, she ran away because her father promised her hand to an ogre in exchange for wagons of silver. I think she hides the dresses in walnut shells. I loved the illustration.
Donkey skin was my favourite short story as a kid lol, I remember preferring it over all the other fairy tales (It was one of the original stories too so idk if I just liked that it was dark / raw in comparison to the disney stuff I was exposed to)

I saw this in French class and every single one of us thought we were in a fever dream. They made a movie of this! It was a musical. The fairy god mother sang about how girls shouldn't sleep with their dad's. You know just to clear it up for her
“And don’t let your dad take interest, that’s incest!”🗣️🗣️🎶🎶🎶

There's actually a movie adaptation of Donkeyskin created by Jacques Demy, the same guy who made The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. ☂️🌂
I've never really deep-analyzed that story. I remember there was a film on it too and it didn't click at the time that it was a really bad story - I was too young.
So for kids, there's the dresses, the prince, etc. For others, there's the immoral father that we all want to beat the s. out of, the condition of women that can be differently interpreted according to the time we're in.
I think it's a very sad story and for nowadays if people read it, it might get them disgusted by it and maybe refrain from such behavior... Although I may be too wishful here.

Can you talk about Geryon form Greek Mythology next! 🙃
This one is quite dark, but that’s something interesting about your content. It’s interesting how dark fairy tales were. Definitely an s tier.
Well, the thing is...fairy tales weren't originally meant for children. They were entertainment in fashionable salons, which is where Perrault's and other French fairy tales got their start. And even by the time of the Grimms, when they were labeled as "children's and household tales," these were stories from a harsher time where illness and early death were common, so the stories often reflected this much harsher world. Stories reflect their tellers and the times they're told in, after all.
Funny thing is, I've heard a variant of this fairytale by way of Jim Henson's The Storyteller. The tale was called Sapsarrow/Straggletag.
Fascinating, thank you. I love folklore and I’m going off to get the books and articles you reference.
They called this story sapsorrow in the Storyteller by Jim Henson Productions, they didn't have donkeyskin they had Feathers & Fur I guess. Then there was the Grimm's Fairy Tale classics by Sabon that had one that was called the coat with many colors which was kind of dark but it was good.

I read a more ‘kid-friendly’ version of DonkeySkin at like 7, I can’t remember the name of it - where, instead of it being her dad who wanted to marry her, he wanted to make some marriage alliance with an older neighbouring king- & she asks for various unusually made gowns, she gets all of them, & is kind of despairing- then asks for a cloak made from every kind of fur- & uses that to sneak out (with her fancy dresses- hidden in a case shaped like a golden walnut shell).
She gets work at the kitchens of yet another neighbouring king- & learns he’s to throw a succession of balls for the noble maidens of the land, to find his bride.
She goes to the ball, they dance, he’s attracted, blah, blah, blah. She leaves a short time later.
Next day, she drops an earring in his food.
There’s another ball- lather, rinse, repeat with another dress. His attraction has apparently increased, but she still returns to ‘that peasant life’...
Next day, same deal. The other earring, this time.
Third & final ball- she pulls out the finest of the dresses- & this third night, he’s apparently madly in love with her- yet she still goes back to the kitchens.
Next day, the king goes to the kitchens, & sees her about to drop a ring into his meal- he proposes on the spot...
I was only 12 when I read the **real** & uncensored version- I gotta say, I prefer the kid-friendly version of this tale...
You can’t tell me Hansel and Gretel weren’t potheads
