AZORES: Pico - The Island No One Ever Sails To (MJ Sailing - EP 82)

  • One of the most noticeable islands the Azores have, for housing Portugal's highest point, is also the one that gets nearly the fewest visitors by sailboat. Without many good harbors, we find another way to get to neighboring Pico.
    Hopping the ferry for the four mile trip across from Horta, we set ourselves up with a rental car for 24 hours and meet up with our friends Bill and Grace to see how much of this island we can see within a 24 hour period.
    Much love from the Azores!

    I know what you mean about the Azores being green and lush. The Azores was the first place I landed when leaving Saudi Arabia after Desert Storm. I had been living in a tent in the dirt for 6 months.
    Landing in the Azores, seeing the lush landscape, terra-cotta roofs and cows everywhere...seemed like the Garden of Eden!

    This was my first time to watch one of your videos, and I thought it was terrific. It's nice to see cruisers actually exploring these amazing islands. But, you are right in that there aren't many facilities for cruisers on most of the islands. I would also encourage cruisers to do like you, and spend a couple of days at Pico since it's an easy ferry ride. Another easy ferry ride from Faial is to Sao George which also has some nice lodging. I just wanted to reach into your video for some of that wonderful Azorian cheese! I look forward to see your explorations of Sao Miguel. Flores is our favorite!

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  5 років тому

      Thank you Marcia, we're so glad you liked our travels through Pico! I had mentioned on camera, but ended up cutting it due to length, that we wished we had another few days to spend on Pico but our cat was alone on our boat back in Faial and we didn't want to leave her for more than 36 hours. We're hoping to hit Flores next spring! It was supposed to be our intended landfall but winds were out of the NE and the harbour would have been very uncomfortable.

I really wish that I could contribute to your channel but I'm living on a small savings and a disability check and insurance,doctors and just daily living drains my bank account each month so I'm really sorry because if I could your channel would be one that I would support. Thank you for what you do to bring some pleasure to someone like me that would otherwise just sit around bored to death.

      @@characterboat22 A dry deckbag maybe a good option too. Mustang sells one that you can strap to the deck and keep everything safe.

      I'd love to stop there too sometime. Maybe on the way to Brazil..... But that will have to wait just a few years :)

      @@mattjohnson6716 I'll have to see if we can cross paths with y'all in S/V Tango X-ray sometime when you're in the South Atlantic or Pacific. We plan to hit Ireland, too, but not for a few years. I have heard not nothing but good about Ireland.

    What happens to Georgie when you got off on one of these jaunts? Just wondering (my wife asked, actually).

      She stays on the boat alone and waits for us to come back. That's why we were only in Pico for one night instead of more. The longest we've left her was 2.5 days in Guatemala.

    I guess your friends did not want to be in your video. I would have thought y’all were alone had you not told us!

      Yeah....in the beginning I felt odd forcing a camera in their face since we had been friends and would casually hang out long before UA-cam; and we didn't want to force them to be entertainers just in order to hang out with us. But the further the videos get with them by our side, you'll see them become more involved with our on-camera actions. 🙂
