      That’s nice to hear. The so-called best drum instructor in my area as a kid was known to be an asshole and go so far as to whack you on the hand with a stick. I studied under one of his students Who is way better but could be quite testy himself.

    Joe Morello was the first drummer I ever heard play the kit like it was one instrument. His inventiveness seemed endless and he was a very musical drummer. One of the best and the only drummer for Brubeck's music.

    I studied with Joe in early 70s in Elizabeth, NJ. He lived in Irvington with his wife Jean. First I paid $20/HR then he did not charge me. There was a good mutual friend - Steve Foster who also worked in Stain Glass. Joe meant the Jazz Drumming whatever Mozart meant classical music. Very thematic drummer who heard the melody. Joe used to tell me Kazim "I can teach you the mechanics - the technique, but how I play in music can neither be thought nor can it be learned."" Either you have it or not." I suggest you fans listen to the tune - "Paradiddle Joe" with Carmen McRae with Brubeck. No drummer can accompany a singer like that dead ore alive or to be born. Joe's probably one of the best drumming to set an example again for all drummers dead or alive or to be born.

      Lived Hillside and in mid 70s' met Joe in Rondo music on Rt 22 Union......I was picking out a new ride/rock Z cymbal and he came over and asked what I was looking for. I was 15 and playing mainly in a hard rock band and wanted the ride to really be heard thru all the bass and guitar.......I was down to 2 diff cymbals, and Joe gave a few hits to both and suggested the 21" Rock ride Med/Heavy. I got that cymbal and still have it........my name also Joe!!!!! I'll never forget that night.

Bu kaydın yapıldığı yer de rahmetli Rudy Van Gelder'in New Jersey'deki stüdyosu olmalı. İkisi de efsane idiler, ışıklar içinde yatsınlar.

    I keep coming back to these videos; the perfect drummer: starts with great tuning of his kit ( that sound is crisp and precise but the floors have some bottom too; chops, dynamics, groove in every phrase. Yes older here but the technique is so clean and flawless.

  • @carnivalwrestler

    The comments below are spot on. Joe taught us to be melodic with the drums. Was it because he started out playing the violin at age 6? Don't know, but this man was made to play the drums. And how he fits so comfortably in quartets as well as big bands as well as playing with the New York Philharmonic (Brubeck plays Bernstein plays Brubeck, a very good album) is amazing. Astonishing technique, yes, but it's all subordinate to his overwhelming musicality.

    • @rhythmfield
      @rhythmfield 4 роки тому +2

      carnivalwrestler I studied with Joe too, and just have to echo what Joe Caroselli says above - spot on comment and yes to all-every single note the man played was musical, had a musical purpose, and fit into the bigger picture, but it was a little bit loose and very swinging always, as well. It’s really sad that the big band or large group album he made I think around 1960 or ‘63 has been lost or never released after the 1980s or so. It’s one of the greatest examples of big bang drumming ever in 100 years, period. I really hope someday more people can hear that recording, with “Johnny comes marching home“ and “sounds of the loop“and other incredible tunes. Great brushwork on there too.

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 3 роки тому +1

      @@rhythmfield It's too bad the big-band experience is no longer part of the zeitgeist, but it's just too hard to support it, unless you're a big institution. They don't just spring up, overnight, like a garage band!
      But to have a GOOD trumpet section, like he's got? It's a joy to be The Guy on the kit in an ensemble as hot and greasy as that one is. You hear the glisses from the horn sections? Sweet stuff. Those guys have some serious, greasy chops. Seriously, they don't even have to move the valves up and down. Just play those horns like kazoos.

    Perfection. This man was and is the genuine article. I bet you one thing, Joe was the only drummer who chose to, and had the understanding and technique to insert Buddy's actual ideas in few places.
    Joe Morello was one of our last connections to the old days, when the drummers were not only musical geniuses, but they all had individual styles. At least all of the great ones did.
