3:41: Riddle me this: What's the difference between 2x two-pin outputs and 1x four-pin output? That's right; nothing. The simple fact that there is only one chassis means that it's not monoblocks. But guess what! Abyss is owned by JPS Labs, a cable company, who's sole purpose is selling you overpriced cables with ridiculous terminations to earn money, and what better way to incentivize people to buy those cables than to first sell them an amplifier that needs them. Look at Chord. Even the $10.000 DAVE doesn't have balanced, it literally only has the XLR outputs for compatibility reasons. At least they're right in that regard.

He obviously does not know, but many of the most widely revered, highest end DAC’s used for reference standards for developing and evaluating other DAC’s are R2R. Generally considered the finest DAC’S, the Chord Dave, Denafrips ARES, dCS and other top DAC’s are all R2R Ladder DAC’s- so are many others. Also, all people DO have perceptual preferences, and in fact, as a function of age, sex, occidental/oriental and many other things affect our perceptual, and physical hearing biases. Also, since there is no perfect recording in terms of recording or playback/reproduction, so different people DO need to find what fits you best set of trade-offs.
He knows a lot less than he thinks he does. Many of the things he asserted most strongly are simply WRONG, such as: (1) the best DAC’s are Delta-Sigma, (2) we all perceive and hear the same, (3) the recording is some sort of a reference standard, given that he likely have never listened to proper master tapes, or even well recorded PDM files keeps him from knowing any better- let alone been part of thousands (or even 10’s) or live studio recordings, defines his lack of knowledge.

hilarious video but I can't agree 100% with not allowing people to have different preferences for sound reproduction. if we are only talking about accuracy, then distortion of any kind is objectively bad. however, some people are into audio (perhaps not "audiophiles" by dictionary definition who chase accurate HiFi reproduction) for less analytical reasons and more enjoyment reasons. I really like what you're trying to do by spreading more real information, but I also think it's important not to gatekeep this hobby overly harshly.

Like most things in nature, things are engineered around competing trade-offs, which includes price, analytical/resolving vs forgiving/musical, and many others. Even the terminology of things like timbre, tonal balance, musicality, etc reveal the subjective contour involved with how professionals and others describe music and Hi Fi.
Maybe hundreds of years from now we will have a perfect set of recording and playback methods, and a way to defeat age, room acoustics and other things, so we can create perfect sound. However, I think we all know that we are not there yet. I am sure he will eschew this reality in favor of bashing those headphones when he listens to them.

I gotta give DMS some slack here. I’m an LTT fan and Linus is very open that they like to go completely nuts on a product class to make it more engaging.
I’m pretty sure that Linus & team very specifically requested DMS to bring the most absolutely crazy gear he possibly could just to showcase the audiophile rabbit hole. He does even say that you could have “half the gear for a similar sound”.
The other point is that DMS was sent over specifically to represent Abyss. It can be tough when selling similar products to call one out as ‘the best’ when they may occupy different niches. Perhaps this was the younger days of DMS’s learning, or maybe he was hamming it up for the camera, but he does know his shit. He’s built a number of pretty crazy setups, designed headphones and built an open source speaker (which measures quite well).
I’d give the man a bit more credit before you rip apart his every word.

We do a wide range of civilian and DOD/DOE, and I can say that while the setup they have there is not cheap, and are past diminishing returns value for 99% of people, we all have a tendency to,project. I have worked with gear that has critical purpose for engineering, medical and other purposes related to audio that is FAR beyond these prices. However, without it, design engineering would not be possible. Acoustic engineering brings additional complexity in terms of perception, value propositions and ear training and refinement. Like most perceptual things, from audio to food- some think a $100 meal is ridiculous, while others gladly pay much more than that for just their wine. Projecting your value prop on others is a fool’s errand.
I got one with flat membranes and a phenomenal response, as run measuring equip here. I like it as much, but differently than my Jade II’s, or Warwick Aperio’s (don’t even bother looking at the price of them, if you think the 1266 are high). HOWEVER, like the Jade’s and a few others I have had, YOU MUST DRIVE THEM PROPERLY, or they do barely average. With the XIAudio power and amp or the WA33, they are glorious. I enjoy several headphones as much (e.g. the Susvara, Meze Epoch’s and some custom’s I engineered for myself). But the 1266’s analytical vs enjoyability/musicality in terms of tone, clarity, realism, timbre soundstage and imaging are at a completely unique place among all headphones regardless of price.
However, you can have a nice experience starting around $150, so to each their own- just don’t let others’ ability to attain/afford higher levels of sound quality and enjoyment turn you green.

6:35: Okay, let me get this straight. You go to a restaurant and get served a plate of food. On it there is a steak, some sauce, some greens, and some mashed potatoes. The problem is, that you don't like mashed potatoes. What you're telling me is, that the only option that you have in this scenario that doesn't render you an idiot is throwing the entire plate of food out, and simply open your restaurant. If it were me, I'd just... you know... leave the mash, i.e. take away the part that I don't like. In the same vein, I'd simply EQ the bass down on a song with too much bass that I otherwise like. In the end, audiophilia is about enjoying what you're hearing, and not forcing yourself to hear what someone else enjoys.

    • @scientificaudiophile
      @scientificaudiophile  2 роки тому +3

Honestly that’s a terrible analogy. Audiopholia is about recreating the sound the artist intended, anything else is a cop out, elitist position that you know better than the artist. The analogy would be you are at a concert and don’t like the way the conductor is asking the bass drums to play Vivaldi’s Magnificat RV 610. That just happens to be the true live sound, which you don’t like. The answer is not to buy that recording of that masterpiece, but find the recording where the conductor did it correctly.

@@scientificaudiophile At the core Magnus' thought-experiment it's only about the single logical fallacy he perceived in your diatribe. It's like saying you have to be a cow to tell if the milk is bad. I disagree with his superlatives and hyperbole. It's non-productive and blocks 3rd party acceptance of what is otherwise perfectly sound logic on his part. Many artists ARE idiots, many recordings were meant to sound good on car woofers. Soooo you can't say: "ALL". Some youtube viewers DO know better than artists and recording engineers. Absolutely, as an audiophile I expect the equipment to be capable of recreating the sound that was captured on the media. But, only as a starting point. As many men who have reached this point in life where we can FINALLY afford this, I have damaged my hearing (not only with age) but playing on stage and working in industry. I will now endeavor to make the music sound correct to MY ears as I see fit. As a third generation musician, son of an audio/electronic engineer, having obtained my electronics degree in '81 and my PhD in music performance in 2019... I have the expertise and experience to teach. If a microphone used to capture a performance had a noticeable peak; It is not a cop out to level that down. My ears have lost some sensitivity to highs. I have my own ways of bringing them up in a reproduction without added color. I INSIST that it is not a cop out. It is an accomadation. If you extend the metaphor to the mashed potatoes, (and ignore the rudeness) I think you'll understand what the Mag-man meant. btw I haven't used EQ for reproduction since 1982, but (even in reproduction) it's MY music to f*ck with. I reserve the right to correct the sound rendered by an outdated or errant engineering process or a stupid artist. also: Loved you taking down Linus and DMS!

A DJ, metal band, orchestra or whatever are obviously going to sound different in different setups. Guess we all are going to order a pair of Adam audio speakers as they are one of the common monitors in various studios. And get similar sized rooms with similar treatment for every individual track 🤷 Then maybe it will sound as the artist/ person mixing the track has intended

Second pass at this since it’s hilarious. I honestly have little clue of the true technicalities of sound, however, this DMS guy does feel like that pubescent Best Buy new employee tbh. In fact, to me he sounds like that really annoying employee that just keeps poking at your face with facts while you’re trying to test a product. In my home country this happens a lot in malls with the perfume counter ladies; they don’t know crap, yet they can recitante a comprehensive assortment of made up terms and stuff, and even when you’re just chilling out testing samples, you can actually feel their omnipotent presence. It’s just so invasive.

DeepGroove HATES when Scientific Audiophile talks about perfect reproduction of what was actually played. You know why? Because it's a re-cor-ding! It's not actual live music. There are no miniaturized musicians dancing on your CD with megaphones!
You want to hear what the artists intended? Most artists don't even know what their intentions are! They're freaking high all the time. If you're lucky, you'll get a stitching of the least worst seconds of the accidental noise they ever managed to produce. Not to mention the mastering engineer who has broken arms and undiagnosed ear myopia...
Still want to hear more of that best perfect perfection ever? Go to a concert! Become a groupie! Get a bat ear transplant! And save 600 hours to do something for the world.
Ugh my god Scientific Audiophile... let's continue...

I hate the looks of the Frankenstein headphones but I also used to have Philips SHL9450 with a similar swivel on top and I liked that function a lot. They folded really tight. Recently I was playing with an idea to make a headphone with really stiff headband and arrived at similar shape to Abyss. This kind of always annoys me about reviewers. They always look at a design and just utter: uglly/pretty, without really digging into design principles behind those decisions. There are acoustic benefits to stiff headbands. A sturdy headphone can have bone conduction effects which is needed, because the same resonance eats away at bass if the headphone is not coupled to your head well enough.

He obviously does not know, but many of the most widely revered, highest end DAC’s used for reference standards for developing and evaluating other DAC’s are R2R. Generally considered among the very the finest DAC’S, the Chord Dave, Denafrips ARES, dCS and other top DAC’s are all R2R Ladder DAC’s- so are many others.
Also, all people DO have perceptual preferences and we all do hear differently- and in fact, as a function of age, sex, occidental/oriental and many other things , they all greatly affect our perceptual and physical hearing differences and biases. Also, since there is no perfect recording in terms of recording or playback/reproduction, so different people DO need to find what fits their own best set of trade-offs.

The younger generation has little or no respect for history. Anything older than 15 seconds is irrelevant which also includes what they said 15 seconds ago which is supposed to have been forgotten. Of course if you call them on this they'll deny it and try and gaslight you saying you didn't understand them and of course blame you for being rude.
