I'm planning to refinish my old 2 car garage, it needs some TLC... Vinyl or Aluminum? I prefer Aluminum but it's harder to work with. ?! Kudos to you for doing yours! Winter now (USA) I'll do it in the spring. 😂 😂 I'm always looking for a reason to put it off.
Tip for the nails: Hammer a little hole with an "ice pick". I used this method on my shed for nails and fascia screws. ... Tip #2: Working alone I also used gorilla tape to hold fascia in place until I got them secured.
Looks like you have what's called a 2 x 6 (actually 1.5 x 2.5 inch) fascia board (which may have been cut at an angle to accommodate the slope of the roof) below your aluminum fascia trim. How did you size your aluminum fascia trim to fit the outer dimensions of the fascia boards? Where did you purchase the aluminum fascia trim?
Usually the bird boxes are bent separately from facia metal...that way you dont have to add that little 3 inch piece on the back. Just for future reference.
Honestly no idea. Building materials were limited due to COVID and I worked with what I could get when I needed it. It’s my own garage and wouldn’t do this type of work for clients. This stuff was like $200 CAD for the whole garage. I can’t see a rake and straight fascia being cheaper.
Your hammer is too big. Go down a size. Move your hand up on your hammer when nailing fascia nails more control and you won't accidentally hit the fascia. 👍
@S c I wasn't disagreeing on pre-drilling the holes- I totally see it making the process quicker. However, the 'tips' are not for professionals. They are aimed at the average homeowner, who has a much more likely change to bore out the hole too large or skate the drill bit across the surface. It isn't the fastest but I didn't ruin a single piece of fascia, just bent a few nails at the bottom corner 🤣
@S c I also have worked siding for years but I have seen countless people and countless crews that predrill the face. Literally takes 3 seconds. You arent bankrupting the company that’s such a shitty exaggeration. Rather my guys take a few seconds to predrill holes than to leave a bunch of pings all over the fascia
I have seen soffits done after siding/stucco. In theory, as long as the siding is stopped at the correct height, it shouldn't impact the soffits in anyway..at least that I can think of.
@@hsdesignstudio Im building a shed and i like the look of siding tucking under the soffit, looks cleaner that way, but it creates a challenge to do the bird box
@@Mrdubomb Do you need to have the birdbox look? You could always finish the siding/soffit in a more modern manner where the gable soffit extends to the main flat soffit, and a small piece of flashing fills the angle gap.
I couldn't get my hands on any at the time. It was pre-bent 10'ers or wait who knows how long for ordering. Like I said in another comment, I would have preferred if I didn't have to add the skinny layer, and instead it was all one piece around the corner.
@@jjrock5 what I mean is that my particular birdbox framing is taller than the depth of any fascia I could get my hands on. Therefore, I had to add the extra skinny piece around the top to cover the framing.
@@joeyjohnson9765 Because they'll dent the aluminum fascia more than needed it can also warp them over time unless its a small machine screw of some sort, then at that point its not worth it. Plus screws can allow more moisture inside than needed.

I dig this.
Good video. My gutter guy wants me to use aluminum gutter apron, but will I have to hand nail aluminum nails instead of coil roofing nails?

Use a larger nail to tap a hole, then drive the smaller nail
That's a good idea 👍
3 tips
Midwest snips
Estwing hammer
Predrill

Use the siding brake to make return boxes that's more easy
I make a 2' piece. Bend the return or reveal whatever you call it then bend the piece in half n just go up and cut to fit in place no measurements.
How long were those nails and were they aluminum?
Usually the bird boxes are bent separately from facia metal...that way you dont have to add that little 3 inch piece on the back. Just for future reference.
I have a question, is it more cost effective to buy pre bent fascia and rake metal than to custom bend your own?

Would please provide the link to buy aluminum fascia you used in the video. Thanks.
Generic fascia from a local place- no link unfortunately
It's all the same "coil stock" aluminum trim. Depot and Lowes both carry it
They have pre-bent pieces of facia as well
Your hammer is too big. Go down a size. Move your hand up on your hammer when nailing fascia nails more control and you won't accidentally hit the fascia. 👍
Moving the hand up is a good call 👍 still blaming those nails.. 🤣
Predrill the nail holes !! 😂😂😂
Hahaha that's one way to do it 🤣

@S c ahhh gotcha, That makes way more sense. The only holes I can see pre-drilling are those bottom corners through three layers.

Yea I never nail the face of fascia pre drill bottom lip
I need some fascia. Where can l get some?
Home depot or Lowes
Have you ever seen siding done first and the birdbox/soffit done after?

It really doesn’t matter but I’ve been doing this for 20yrs but I prefer doing the soffit first
@@hsdesignstudio I like to make the bird box all in one piece
What gave you the idea that music would improve the quality of the video?
I would like know more on Soffit and Fascic
Kinda of a scott brown episode layout for the episode number.
its easier to install when theres hardly any drip edge and no step facia board behind drip edge but good video
Just need to know how to make a basic 90° turn. Lol.
You need a bigger stepladder, smaller hammer. Dont cut the bottom off as it looks crooked, use a knife, and score it. Practice practice practice.
Lowes and HD no longer keep this in stock. Not even the gutter supply companies have it anymore.
Pre drill
Why wouldnt you just bend a corner box... would look 10x better

Wouldn't it better to use a 1cm screw with a white end , so you don't dent the fascia
Also an option. If you don't miss the nail, you don't dent the fascia 👍
No never use screws on fascia unless it’s wood fascia board
@@uNii7ywhy not

@@uNii7y thank you for the info
Do yourself a favor and get some reds and green midwest brand snips and pre drill your holes
Stainless steel > aluminum nails
Buy a Van-mark bender and make bigger pieces of facia___not bits nailed together
They are 10' pieces, not exactly bits. This was my own garage, not something I do regularly.
The facia at the store has a j shape to it
Yours is an L
How do I use theis j shape crap
Use a drill boy!
You need more practice.
Pretty bad video.
