I've been scrubbing potatoes up good and leaving the skins on. They say a lot vitamins are in the skins plus fiber. That's what the prisoners survived on during World War II. Thank you for the video and sharing. Blessings to you.
I'd love to see $5 challenges. It's a way for visual learners to "get it" when hearing frugality explained doesn't really break the brain-balk barrier. 😁
I’m sure having dinner at your house will be the highlight of your aunt’s week. It’s kind of you think of your aunt and cooking for her. Yes to the $5.00 meals❤
That bacon grease will really perk up the cabbage. The core can be run through a food processor to get every last bit. My grandmother would feel at home in this kitchen. This was their home and so many of her pans and baking dishes, utensils, dishes and tableware are being used every day. Her Betty Crocker Cookbook is on a shelf.
Yes, please do the $5 meals! I, too, just found you. You remind me of my late father from West Virginia. I enjoy hearing your "seasoned" wisdom and frankness. Take care!
I am 78 years old and love watching your videos! I would say yes please to the $5 videos!! I am getting ready to put on a pot of soup, I don’t have plans to put any meat in it. Wishing I had some cabbage but don’t.. have a great day!
I cleaned out the fridge last week during the freeze to make a veg soup. Used the rehydrating water from potatoes and mushrooms and saved the liquid off some mixed vegs used earlier in the week which all made for a very light soup broth. Threw in a quarter cup of homemade pickled vegs and the wee little bit of 2 leftover scratch tartar type sauces which perked things up just enough. Waste not, want not.
I had some ham left in the freezer, so added some lentils, an onion, a can of tomatoes and some seasonings. Made cornbread and have dinner for a couple of days. I think that was about $5 total for two nights dinner. 👍
So lovely you can spend time with your aunt. I only have 3 of my aunts and uncles left out of the large number. Each opportunity to spend time with them is a blessing.
I absolutely agree with your method of making cornbread-110%. Some people may argue that sugar has no place in cornbread, but here's my counterpoint: a century ago, corn was ground into meal only when it was fully ripe, and naturally, it was sweet. However, due to modern industrial food production, corn is now harvested and ground much earlier, resulting in a less sweet meal. That’s why adding just two tablespoons of sugar actually brings cornbread closer to its authentic, traditional flavor. I really enjoy your videos - the Rodgers family from Saint Paul, MN
Southern Frugal Mama does five dollar Friday for her family of five and its fun to see what she can come up with. I would enjoy seeing you do a five dollar meal too.
From one granny to another, thank you for your very enjoyable channel. It's like sitting at the kitchen table talking with a friend/neighbor/family member about things most of us deal with daily. I'm behind on watching and liking your videos, but I'll work on that. I just have one comment to add to your talk about how we food prep for the week or make a big pot of soup, etc. and then get tired of eating the same thing several days in a row. Same here! What I do is have a serving of whatever I made on that day, put another serving or maybe two in the fridge, then go ahead and portion out the rest of it to go in the freezer. That way I don't get tired of eating the same thing, and I get to look forward to having more of that delicious dish later on without having to make the whole thing again. Take care, and I look forward to more of your good ideas on frugal living.
Thank you! I need to get a cabbage ready tomorrow. I might need to put it in a plastic bag this time. Last week my husband was tummy sick and his cooked stinky broccoli lol, had infiltrated other things. I had a can of sauerkraut speaking up too. I plan to fry mine up too.
I do not have to have meat at my meal. I like veggies and cornbread.I don't put egg in my cornbread just selfrising corn meal and self-rising flour and milk in a bacon grease pan I pour out the extra bacon grease into my mix before I pour it in the pan.
Southern Frugal Momma does $5 meal challenges on Fridays for her family of 5. She has 3 boys and her husband. They are very interesting, she doesn’t usually make the meat her main focus.
I love different bowl recipes, with your choice of meat, veggies, rice, seasonings, toppings like cheese. That way each person can individualize according to preferences.
I haven't had cabbage in a while. I should get some next time I shop. Your grandma's wedding gift pot lasted longer than the marriage. There are a few of us who can say the same thing. 👋😁🇨🇦
It would be fun to add the $5 challenge! There are so few people in this current generation that understand how easy it is to cook from scratch out of your pantry. Thanks for sharing!
I love your meal combinations.reminds me so much of my grandmas cooking. I am 60 now...we had a lot meatless meals or everyone just got a little meat but great gravy and a lot of potatos. I would love to see what you come up with for 5 dollar meals. God bless!
$5 meals can be only what you can buy for $5 and maybe salt &pepper. Otherwise you can use certain things in your pantry but you have a lot of stuff in your pantry.
So glad you got the book! Do let me know what you thought of it if you happen to get around to reading it. Carl's a treasure, LOL In the meantime, loving your channel. I've been watching for years..I'm a Gen X kid raised by Depression Era parents so saving money and good old fashioned home cooking speaks volumes to me.
All of that sounds just yummy! A couple nights ago I made a thick and hearty hamburger soup. It's also like a stew and we had it over rice last night. Have a great day!
Hi there, 👋 hope you are doing well and I love your videos because you are so relatable to me and I love your logical way of doing things. Fried cabbage is so delicious cheap and healthy too! I don’t think you need meat at every meal or at all ever really, lots of non-meat protein out there. Crispy fried tofu with just salt and pepper is delicious, beans, cheese, lots of options. And like you said, other things contain smaller amounts and they add up too. $5 meals sounds like an awesome idea, go for it!

At 89 you get to eat what you want, even have desert first if you want. 😁

I’m not a big meat eater. We grew up with a garden and 75% of our meals were vegetables.

I have an old 1800s family recipe for corn muffins that has sugar.
@ yes, there are many who liked it even sweeter still. It seems the closer one approached Canada the sweeter cornbread was expected to be.
I love the $5 meal idea!💕
Yes. $5 meals!
Sounds good! Looking forward to see how stewed potatoes are made. Never heard of them but I’ve never met a potato I didn’t like.
Me neither
$5 meals sounds fun! I love that white batter bowl that you mixed your cornbread in.

Southern Frugal Mama does five dollar Friday for her family of five and its fun to see what she can come up with. I would enjoy seeing you do a five dollar meal too.
I made fajitas with frozen peppers and onion and vheese and sour cream on soft taco shells. One was enough with spanish rice
Awesome shirt Granny ! Hope you enjoy the meal and your aunt’s company.

I enjoy your videos. I love the convenience of prepared mixes but started making my own mixes. Rice a roni , jiffy, onion soup mix, etc!
Love cabbage, potatoes and okra; it all sounds delicious. Hope you and your aunt have a lovely dinner and evening. 😊
I would have loved those potato peels for the compost bin. Do you garden?
I think you can also spray them with oil and season and put in the air frier or oven and make potato peal chips.
Love it ❤ when Granny cooks!!😊
Thank you! I need to get a cabbage ready tomorrow. I might need to put it in a plastic bag this time. Last week my husband was tummy sick and his cooked stinky broccoli lol, had infiltrated other things. I had a can of sauerkraut speaking up too. I plan to fry mine up too.

Yes please to the $5 meal videos. I would really appreciate getting ideas for economical meals from you! 🙂
Yee, do $5 meals. Thank you.
I like potatoes with the skin even mashed too with them on
Do you have a potato peeler? It seems like quite a bit of potato is being wasted by peeling it with a knife.
Love your videos! Your tshirt scares me a little, though!😂
Enjoy your company😊
If you could make a video on how to doctor up canned beans that would be much appreciated.
You're from my generation. 74 here in South Carolina.
