Top 3 Canadian ETFs For 2024 // Passive Income
My annual video where I recommend the top ETFs to buy going into the new year. I'm briefly breaking down the Top 3 ETFs Canadians should invest in for 2024, I try to pick safe and diversified ETFs for all types of investors. This is mainly for beginner investors but if you look into the ETFs I'm recommending, this could be used for any long-term portfolio. The key here is investing for the long term. I do not recommend investing for the short term, always invest with a long term perspective.

Heyyy, 4 years strong now! Thanks for the support, I was actually hoping to be further along my YT journey but I'll take what I can get :p
hey Bessem, it's been awhile and I really like it when you do breakdowns and suggestions! Cheers!
Glad you like them!
@@CanadianFinancePro how about XDIV? I remember you suggested XDIV years ago for Canadian Div ETF as it screens payout ratio and div groewth. I think XDIV is essentially Quality+Div ETF vs XEI which is just Div ETF.
Thank you for this!! Very helpful
😁
Great video!!!! Short and to the point. Love the focus on Canadian stocks. Some people ramble on. Thanks! I just subscribed.
Hey thanks! I was finding everyone logs off or leaves the video if I go over 10 minutes, so I try to keep it a little shorter and less detailed.
Hey Bassem! UA-cam just recommended you, so you're definitely doing something right! I just subbed too
That's awesome! This video has been popular, not my other videos :p
Great Info! Subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the great video!.
Glad you liked it!
I like how short and to the point this video was Bravo !!
wahoo thanks! I found most viewers were tuning out if it was too long.
Hi Bassem, I just stumbled upon your video tonight. I like your optimism and information shown in this video. I'm new to investing so appreciate your content and am considering taking your course when I have time. I just recently graduated and am working two jobs in my field. Busy times! I look forward to your future content.
That's awesome, thanks for the support, let me know if you have any questions.
Very helpful. Best channel on canadian finance on YT!
😍 Coming from the dude with 500K subs, thank you.
Thank you for you work and Time ,
Love you videos 👍
Glad you like them!
Great video!
Keep up with this content love it
Thanks! Will do!
Great video! I have the Vangaurd version VEQT, Vfv, and VDY.
Nice! I recommend those ones last year so decided to change it up a little.
Pretty much interchangeable..Vanguard has a little more home bias (Canadian) compared to Blackrock.@@CanadianFinancePro
I am interested in Crypto but to be honest i don't understand it so I don't invest into it (Foundational approach I take). On the outside it seems complex..Wallets, Hot - Cold, keys etc...With the new ETF's in this space I thought this was a great way to simplify this however in your video you recommend owning the actual stock? Can you expand on why?
@@CanadianFinancePro any reason for the change ?
Great picks 🙌
Thanks Jeff.
This channel deserves more visibility! I am super new to investing in stocks/bonds/etfs. I was scared to put my money in stocks without having much knowledge about it (my background is also non-finance) so this gives me some confidence and exposure as I have already invested in vfv and xeqt. Would love to stay updated with this channel. Thank you and Subscribed :D
Welcome aboard! I do think it needs more visibility :p
Is there US withholding tax on the first 2?
Going to like and subscribe as well… Canadian investing content is hard to find.
Hi Bassem awersome vedio, I gained a good passive income with this suggested ETF Top 3 Canadian ETFs For 2024 // Canadian Passive Income.. THANK YOU - VERY INFORMATIVE.
Fantastic!
Hello, curious if you still recommend XEQT/XSP/XDV from one of your previous videos? Not sure if I should change products. Thanks :)
I would stay the course. XSP is the same as XUS, its just hedged to the CAD whereas XUS is not hedged.
Also, XDV is just the top 30 best dividend payers (excluding REITs) in the TSX whereas XEI is all the top dividend payers (including REITs).
Great video as always! What do you think of ISA's such as TDB8150? Could you make a video on those?
Hey, I can take a look! I don't want to potential review an account then say I don't like it :s I'm not a fan of interest buttttt maybe I should do a video on just savings accounts.
Thanks for this video. I want to know which platform questrade or ws is better for xeqt? If one wants to invest in usd and cad.
Either one is fine
Keep up the good work, all the informations were very helpful. Please explain more about investing in crypto and stock market
Great video. If I hadn't watched the entire video I wouldn't have subscribed or liked because you only said it at the end. I would recommend that you quickly entice viewers to like this video and subscribe to your channel after a short introduction, and to remind them to do so at the end like you did.
haha isn't it annoying as a viewer to constantly hear the subscribe and like comment? Tbh, maybe that's why I'm not growing or not getting as many subs, I can start putting them in, but I thought it was obvious, of course I want you to sub!
@@CanadianFinancePro If I am a guest in your home, and you ask me if I'd like something to drink - it's not until you ask me that I then think about it in my head. Never hurts to ask ;)
Hi Bassem, thanks for your great content. One of your previous annual videos you had recommended VEQT, so I've been investing it and sticking the course. Also, I've been investing in VFV and HXQ i know it's overlapping but i like the top 10. My question is what are your thoughts on this plus another question you no longer recommend Purpose? I notice my Bitcoin and Etherium Purpose etfs went up. Thanks.
Yeah Bitcoin and ETH are up like 100% this year. I don't recommend Purpose bc of their fees, they keep mentioning it'll drop, but its still super high for no reason, so, I'm annoyed at them. Also, overlapping is fine.
oh yeah good point. I forgot about the crazy high fees. @@CanadianFinancePro
xus is non hedged is the hedged version xsp? thanks for the clear & to the point video.
That's correct, non currency hedged, the opposite of XSP.
With your knowledge would you consider the hedged or unhedged in this juncture? I will do my own research.
Unhedged has been outperforming hedged, so I would go XUS.@@titchglover2601
Can you recommend some AI based ETF for 2024 which Canadian can invest
Thanks for all the knowledge you pushing out there❤ Can you please share some tips, and thoughts on shorting crypto.
Thanks! I would definitely not short crypto ... the risk of a huge loss is too high.
hi baseem! which investment should i put XEI…tfsa or rrsp? thanks in advance…
Hey, I would recommend XEI in TFSA first, its my favourite investing account. Max out TFSA then RRSP.
Just found your channel. Awesome. I need some help. All the etfs are hurting my brain. I'm 40 with 20 years till retirement. Would you recommend me these 3? Or xgro? Or a robovisor with questrade portfolio 80/20? I want the cheapest fees and currency conversions. I can invest easily and with discipline.
Mmmm, questrade would be my last choice. I would do xgro or my 3 recommendations.
Thanks man. @CanadianFinancePro
What about VFV? Do you recommend additional to what you mentioned?
VFV is already covered in the blackrock ETF I mentioned
Great video, Is there a xeqt equivalent in usd please?
Yes check out VTI, that is USD and the same thing.
@@CanadianFinancePro thank you
Hey Bassem, I wanted to get your feedback if buying veqt and vfv and hxq okay?
I'll need to see the rest of your portfolio, I'm worried you might be investing in too many different ETFs, making it too complicated?
Yeah you're right. My portfolio is doing well buut i find the stress of over thinking whether or not i'm the perfect portfolio is worth it. I'm planning on just sticking with VEQT and VFV (for high exposure to the US). FOr my HXQ shares would you sell to let it ride? thank you
@@CanadianFinancePro
Hey Bassam, I'm thinking of simplifying my portfolio and only buying veqt 40% and vfv 60%
i found it difficult to recall the names of the ETFs you mentioned, blended in... make those POP, do a count down, change up the screen, show the logo, break your video down into chapters?! some tips maybe. ALso could be some good ALTs.. don't rule out the valuable dePINs
Hi Kate, thanks for the feedback. I did include them in the yellow captions appearing at the bottom of the screen but maybe that wasn't enough.
Also, what are ALTs or dePINs?
Noted, I'll make a summary@@essenceflow
Hey Bassem, great video! I just started getting into investing. Thinking about an equal split among VFV, XEQT, and XEI.
Subbed and liked, can't wait to see what you have in store since you're the best Canadian finance account out there right now.
Going to start investing again slowly but surely had vfv before whats your opinion on vfv vs xus
Its the same thing I believe, I even think they have the same management fee, I reviewed and recommended vfv before.
VFV is S&P500 unhedged, VUS is total US market and currency hedged.
The hell with capital appreciation. I'm in it for that instant payout, the dividends. Do more of those.
Me, too. I look for companies that show consistent dividend growth year over year.
haha I have videos on those too :p@@whiterabbit4606
Which etfs do you recommend for an RESP account and the allocation? Thanks
Same ETFs!
What's the best method or app for buying these in TSFA? If even possible.
Hey you can buy these in any TFSA in any brokerage account. RBC, TD, Wealthsimple, Questrade etc etc. Just type in the tickers I mentioned aka XEQT, or XUS or XEI. That's the symbol. Sorry I should've clarified.
In which account you will invest..? TFSA OR RRSP …as it holds US stocks so there will be withholding tax on it. Can you pls answer
Thanks
These are canadian ETFs holding US stocks, there is no safe haven for withholding tax. Also, the dividends are minor, you shouldn't be worried about WHT on these, you should be focusing on deferring or saving the capital gains. My recommendation is always TFSA first, then RRSP.
Hi Bassem, I would love to see videos on halal investing and providing halal alternatives to the ETFs and stocks you talk about. What would be the halal alternatives to these?
Hey, I actually use Wealthsimple for my halal investing, check this video from a few months ago, its a platform that auto invests for you, I've been using it for 4 years now:
ua-cam.com/video/GwyKhaIsfgI/v-deo.html
Does anyone know what a Canadian ETF is? I guess being listed on the TSX in CAD is not sufficient, right?
For instance, if you buy an ETF within a TFSA that has stocks from various countries, would you have to pay any tax like the US withholding tax, even though it’s a TFSA? I’m not worried about paying tax, but I’m not sure how to declare this on the tax return. Thanks
A Canadian ETF is a Canadian fund that's traded in Canadian dollars. And no, whatever you invest in within a TFSA is tax free regardless of what you invest in.
Working with a small portfolio of 15,000 dollars.
Xus is more costly per share compared to the others. Would you recommend another etf ? Skip this etf of xus for now. Or do all 3 like you mentioned.?
I would do all 3. $15,000 is a lot actually! I started with $1,200 almost 13 years ago.
@@CanadianFinancePro thanks gives me some hope for retirement ! I appreciate the response.
I am always debating if XIU or XIC is better. I'm holding XIU is XEI better? Also, I have not seen you on my timeline for some time. I really enjoy your breakdowns super clear and straight to the point.
Appreciate the kind words! Also, I would switch out XIU for XEI, both great, only time will tell which one wins though :p
What are your thoughts about the 15% withholding tax due to US stocks in TFSA vs RRSP?
The dividends in the stocks recommended are relatively low, I'm holding these mainly for the capital gains : . the 15% wht is worth the loss to save the tax on the gain.
Hey why pick xeqt over veqt?
Also did you consider xic?
To be honest, XEQT and VEQT are the same, I should've recommended ZEQT since that is Canadian owned (by BMO). XIC is good, but too focused on Canada (not an issue), but XIC is indirectly covered in the other stocks I've already recommended.
vfv is a better alternative to xus
Can someone tell me how I can check if HNU or HND will go up. Like we're can I find out how Canadian natural gas is doing?
I use an app called Oil Price live, it'll track crude oil and natural guess, those 2 ETFs you mentioned will mirror Natural Gas. You can check HOU.TO and HOD.TO for crude oil if you're interested. Theyre 3x leveraged though. So the swings are drastic.
@CanadianFinancePro do you think we'll get the " 4 year trend squeeze? Hnd every 4 years pops hard around March 1. Please let me know
That seems to be too random, I would focus on actual global events instead of the trends.
Hello, Need your input... i need to accumulate fund for my child university education which is 4 years from now. i'm keeping aside some money everymonth. I want to be conservative in this goal. Can you suggest any investment option? or should i keep it in GIC?
4 years is too short term for investing. I would do GIC.Have you opened an RESP? I hope so, you'll get $$ from the gov't
Thank you for your inputs
Xei is free on bmo too
Eyyy I didn't know that!
Where did 2023 go? Time flies
Right? I wish I had a fast forward button to get to Spring already :p
I'd be interested to see the performance by dividend income for all of these players vs the S&P 500 too. Can it safeguard and grow $500k cash reserve for next 2 years at no risk?
I think you're better off with majority investment in S&P500 and uprising equities cos they always outperform. Alternatively speaking to a certified market strategist can help with pointers on which to acquire
when it comes to situations like this, it's ideal to engage in various options using an advisor, and I can attest to success of the basket approach seeing my portfolio grow from $350k to almost $1m in barely 3 years, by far my best financial milestone.
@@kashkat987 Hey there, my portfolio has been underperforming recently, and I'm considering a strategy change with the help of an advisr. Is it possible to get in touch with your advisėr?
My advisor is "Monica Selena Park", and her qualifications speak for itself. Most likely, the internet is where to find her basic info, she has a noticeable page for consulting.
Thanks for sharing this. I curiously searched for her full name and her website came after scrolling a bit. I looked through her credentials and did my due diligence before contacting her. Once again many thanks
I know it's solely US based S&P500, but what are your thoughts on a Canadian investing in VFV?
Its the same as XUS, just a different provider ie Blackrock vs Vanguard.
XEQT 60% BTCY 20% ETHY 20% I’m open to higher risk, 30 year horizon. Emergency saving in HISA (5% yield), the rest in wealth simple cash account (4.5%)
Where do you keep your crypto what brokers u use?
I have 3 hard wallets that holds the majority. I keep the rest on shakepay, coinbase and Binance
Hey Bassam, which ETF should I always invest in? You have many ETF videos
I stand by all of them, many of them are just the same thing by different providers aka VSP is the same as XSP. XUS is the same as VFV.
I am to invest 5000 50% in VSP AND 50% VEQT IS THAT OK.....ARE YOU THING THERE IS TO MUCH OVERLAP
What is the downside (there always is one at least) to buying an ETF that buys ETFs. Or to exagerrate,... that buys ETFs (an additional layer of the onion). Also, buying 9000 stocks indirectly versus buying 100 or even one. There has got to be a negative to this approach. The upside is diversification. But fir ecample, doesn't this kind of approach to investing result in higher fees and even higher taxes? . I welcome hearing the pros amd cons not just your recommendations.
A sniper rifle takes more skill to use than a shotgun, but the former results in a very different result. So, even as a beginning investor I am skeptical.
The fees are higher, instead of .03% you'll pay .09%, which isn't the end of the world. Many viewers dont have USD or don't want to convert, so the only way to get into the US market is this inception-style ETF investing. I agree with higher fees, I don't think there are higher taxes though, there are benefits for investing in USD stocks in your RRSP though.
Thanks for doing all the research so I don’t have to 😜
And you say I never do anything for you
I'm 100% in XEQT. Overweighting in the US in Canada increases sector risk (especially in the case of XEI), as well as the risk of over investing in countries that may have poor future returns. While the US generally has outperformed the rest of the world, that may not continue to be the case in the future.
Its definitely a risk we take.
Interesting selection.
What’s u take on ZQQ ETF
Its great, it might be a little too focused, which is why I chose the S&P and the total market index, which already includes the top 100 included in ZQQ.
Cool
Out of 3, all of them subject to 15% withholding? In tfsa
For RRSP or RRIF.... only registered plans the IRS recognizes
Im listening….
whoaaa a comment from the best Canadian finance youtuber :p
@@CanadianFinancePro the oldest you mean
Are you on blossom ?
I'm not, is it just the app that shows everyone my account?
Hi Bassem, Before you always say how VSP is the best for the sp500 what’s better about XUS? And which one is better?
Hey, they're both the same thing, they both track the S&P 500, VSP, VFV, XUS, XSP, these all track the S&P 500, they're just by different companies. VSP/VFV is by Vanguard, the others are by Blackrock. I can't really choose which one is best, they're too similar.
@@CanadianFinancePro quick question about dividends. Let’s say I invest 100k worth of VSP at 80$ per share and it has it 1.34% dividend yield. That means I get 1340$ for the year. If the stock price doubles to 160$ will my dividend also double to 2680$ for the year?
Are these a good idea for those aged 60+
Hi Donna, I wouldn't recommend these if you're close to retirement. I would focus on guaranteed income\investments, like bonds. I wouldn't invest in ETFs since they move too much in the short term.
Crypto ETFs via one's TFSA seems like a no brainer no?
well, kinda, or ... crypto on a defi network where the gov't doesn't know who you are or what you bought .. that's an option too :p
which platform and type of account should I trade on? for ETFs, dividends, growth stocks
I use 3, Questrade, wealthsimple and Interactive Brokers. Wealthsimple is the best for beginners. QT and IB are slightly more advanced, more for trading if you're into it.
y not the popular vfv and vdy
What is the name of the website that you used???
Oh that's the actual Blackrock site, the manager of the ETFs I mentioned:

@@CanadianFinancePro thank you!! I’m just starting my financial investments here in Canada and your video helped me a lot!!
Hey that's awesome@@JohnjohnGM
I'm looking for growth stocks that undervalued
Right now, I feel everything is overvalued. The only two stocks I can think of that have potential: SOFI and PLTR.
❤
All these have US ETF. If i invest in TFSA, i m taxed 15% with held. I 'm losing it.
The main focus of these ETFs are capital appreciation, the dividends are so small, it won't hurt your returns too much to have the 15% WHT on dividends.
When you have a video on stock picks, include US and Canada.
The ETFs he recommends include some US holdings
Why buy a stock holding of toilet paper? Solid assets that you possess is the only thing to hold.
My spouse and I are diversifying our long-term investment portfolio by adding various stocks and ETFs. We've allocated $220k to begin with, focusing on inflation-indexed bonds and companies with strong cash flows. I think the current market presents a good opportunity for long-term gains, but I'm also interested in learning ways to make short-term profits.
While the current market offers short-term profit potential, it's crucial to note that executing such a strategy requires expertise and skill.
Having an adviser is the smartest approach in today's market, especially for those nearing retirement. I personally gained over $270K during this market downturn, which highlighted that there's valuable insight the average individual may not be aware of.
*@heathermellon7826* Who is the professional who is advising you, if you could perhaps tell us? As a novice investing in stocks without the correct direction of a professional, I have lost a lot of money.
I am guided by Camille Alicia Garcia. I found her on a CNBC interview where she was featured and reached out to her. She has since provided entry and exit points on the securities I focus on. You can look her up online if you care for supervision.
This recommendation literally came at the right time, I’m down by $7k in stocks this week alone.. its crazy! I just looked up Camille online and researched her accreditation. She seem very proficient, I wrote her detailing my Fin-market goals and scheduled a call.
