    BMO now offers an all-in-one equity ETF for even more simplicity. ZEQT has Canadian, American and international (both developed and emerging) stocks. Other choices include VEQT (Vanguard) and XEQT (BlackRock). Thought I should mention them, they are awesome products.
    Edit: Well, technically they hold other ETFs that hold the stocks, but the end result is the same.

      I can share three big ones for you. 1. Unless it is an index ETF and passively managed, the MER can get quite expensive with a lot of money invested. For example, Covered call ETFs may have a MER as high as 0.80% or more. With a decent sized portfolio, that is a huge drag, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars over 30 to 40 years. 2. ETFs contain the winners and losers, overvalued and undervalued with no way to cut them out For example, a REIT ETF will hold some of the losers of the group I would personally never wan't to own, but with an ETF, you get them regardless. Same goes for an index ETF like VOO, an S&P 500 ETF. About 400 of the 505 stocks that make up VOO I would personally never invest in. It is a problem of overdiversification. 3. You can never have an amazing return unless the ETFs are leveraged, which increases your risk. So at best, one can expect a return of 5-10% like the S&P500 had done over the last 30 years. Then, when you consider hours done ETFs are structured there's a bunch of other downfalls. No one investment vehicle is perfect. Each person has different circumstances which call for a different strategy. All the best on your investing journey. It is exciting!

    I was expecting a section on how taxes work with ETFs? Is it just like another stock? Only the capital gains tax needs to be paid when you sell but if you own it for 30 years, you pay no taxes during that time?

    • @sprintmiles
      @sprintmiles Рік тому +1

      It's similar to a stock, but an ETF may make distributions such as domestic/foreign dividends, capital gains and return of capital. These passive ETFs do not actively trade stocks, so I wouldn't expect much in the way capital gain distributions, but in many cases I would expect dividend income. I would not expect any return of capital distributions. When an ETF pays a dividend, you would be subject to a tax, similar to how you would be subject to taxes on dividends for any regular dividend paying stock. Also, when you decide to sell, you will need to pay capital gains taxes on your gains (assuming you are not holding your ETF in a TFSA/RSP).

    ETF are like putting your stock market into an average. The average stock market return is around 10% profit per year over a long term period. Only investing in real estate, stock market, fractional share artwork market will be able to keep up with inflation. Only holding cash is trash as inflation lower purchasing power.

    This is great material for beginners but I wouldn't exactly call it an "ultimate guide". Brandon my folks were planning to retire during the gfc and if they hadn't help gold and bonds just owing the snp they would have been down like 50% of their retirement savings. As Keynes said everything is transitory and we all die. Better not to die half as rich.

    So etf... i make 6% but they take an easy 3%. No i would be making about 2-2.5% on my capital. Still weak.

    • @derekcox6531
      @derekcox6531 11 місяців тому

      Um, no. ETFs will run less than 1%. Not sure where you got the 3% number,but that’s not correct. A typical index etf will match the index over time. The longer the etf has been active,the greater the data available to see for yourself.

    Question for you, might even be video worthy 🤷🏼‍♂️ So over the last couple of weeks I’ve been using norbert's gambit to transfer Canadian to USD inside my TFSA in order to avoid exchange rates. My question is, how does USD effect contribution limits when it is deposited or withdrawn from a TFSA? Also, are there any issues with currency gains made inside a TFSA?

  • @fhuzpatch
    @fhuzpatch Рік тому

    Question: are there Capital Gains effects in Canada even without selling your ETF? Since the ETF contains stocks that are being bought and sold, do we (as holders) have to figure out the capital gains on the ETF at the end of the year even when we're not selling the ETF itself? When I'm asking this, I'm directing it to a regular trading account and NOT TFSA or RSP (or RESP) since those are all collectively calculated (or not calculated for TFSA) when removing cash from the fund and not during trades directly. Note proper spellings ... eh? eh? eh?

    • @sprintmiles
      @sprintmiles Рік тому

      An ETF may distribute internally generated capital gains to ETF investors. Fortunately, the types of "passive" ETFs that Brandon wonderfully describes in this video do not actively trade securities, as they're meant to passively track stock market indexes. As such, I would not expect much in the way capital gain distributions. Holders of ETFs would receive a slip detailing the nature of the distribution they received, ie dividend/capital gains/return of capital, so you would not need to track what's happening inside your ETF. That said, you will need to keep track of your ETF's adjusted cost base to work out any potential capital gain if/when you decide to sell your investment.
