    It's called mother-of-pearl. In modern times, it is similar to acrylic resin, in which clams, or abalone shells, are processed and applied with lacquer resin. It is applied with the sap of natural lacquer tree and processed clamshells are attached to it several times to dry it to make the layer thicker. It is one of the common techniques in Japan, Korea, and China. Japan makes cuts from many accessories using lacquer while Korea makes furniture using that method. China also uses this method for a variety of productions.

      Эта техника называется инкрустацией. Раньше делали мебель, украшенную рисунком из шпона разных пород дерева или соломки, перламутра. Картины такие делали тоже, шкатулки и другие вещи. Сейчас не хотят связываться с такой трудоёмкой продукцией. Остались в основном частные мастера.

      As bleak as the future can look for culture like this, in theory we're going to automate everything and there won't be any normal jobs. My hope is if that happens we could switch to a solid universal basic income structure and then encourage people to spend more time on arts and hobbies. Economics are a complicated nightmare so I'm not sure how it would work but I'd love to see a culture that encourages doing stuff like this. Right now many are turned off just because they know it isn't a safe job and a degree or their parents wouldn't want them to try anything artistic. Takes a lot of practice to learn niche skills like this and many people don't think to because they need to get a steady 9-5

    • @koriw1701
      @koriw1701 2 місяці тому

      @@VanityDivinedThese craftsmen spend enormous amounts of time on such intricate projects. Do you think that his multiple years-long apprenticeship was free? What about the cost of all the equipment he needed to purchase to be able to create this one item (he didn't _have_ to get everything, but he _did._ Perhaps you know how much it costs to purchase the materiels? (I mean all the different precious and semiprecious stones and gems that he must use in his designs?) Once all of this has been compiled, how much should he charge by the hour considering everything listed here above? If you said that his creations are then worth $10 or $20, what makes you think that these artisans are willing to accept your low-ball offer in light of everything he's ever done? Thy artisan themselves have added up those costs to determine that they have supplied the equivalent of 10 years salary to bring their crafts to you, my guess is that they have already figured out that they are worth far more than whatever pittance you'd offer them and would likely tell you to "go ahead and buy whatever you can at Walmart. I'll sell my crafts to people who, not only can afford to purchase their item, but can understand the value of what I create _for_ them and how much I went through to bring it _to_ them. Most of all, I'm guessing that he doesn't need your $20.

      @@VanityDivinedhes charging that because of the labor and skill required this isnt like mass produced t-shirts where the cost is the same as materials XD
      500$ still might be steep but if people pay it then thats that. but its 500$ because of the time, materials, and years of training hes done. a skilled artisan if he were to make 30$ an hour and worked 15 hours on this would make 450$, then factor material costs.
