I like to start with a line dance ;) hahaha jk. if I find a crowd difficult to read I've coordinated with the photographer to get a group shot right off the bat, and while everyone is on the dance floor just after they've hyped up taking the photo and everyone is cheering, hit em with a banger and then mix my ass off to keep the energy up for a few songs.
I’m so glad I found your channel...I’ve been looking for different ways to get involved with my crowds. I just booked 3 weddings. Hopefully this year will be better for all of us. Thank you for sharing your tips & tricks!!
Nick.. what you said at 7:25 was probably the most reassuring thing I’ve heard from you yet. I’ve been a DJ for about 15 years. Thankfully I usually kill it at my weddings and other times it feels like no matter what I do or play.. nobody moves. It honestly makes me want to grab an XLR and hang myself. Glad to know I’m not the only one who suffers 😂
I Agree with this! I see people dancing in their seats like crazy when you actually mix during Dinner! This way when your ready for opening dance music they are ready to go!
I love it when guests at a wedding are from NY. They dance during dinner!! ❤🎉 Also, I DJ/Emcee a lot of Corporate Events. They love the napkin or salt shaker game!!
Freaking spot on. I stress some many times to my other dj homies that if you got them dancing just a little bit during dinner makes your life so much easier
Priceless nuggets... My takeaway is mixing during dinner. I would jump in an pre-mixed set towards the end of dinner and throw in a more upbeat, toe tappin' sing-a-long stytle tune to get folks in the mood, then drop a banger to start the dancing. The Napkin Game is golden! Thanks Nick!
I agree 100%. I personally like to do table games. You're showing the people that you're interacting and taking control. I also Use the bartender the first time and the party animal the second time.
Great video as always. I agree mixing during dinner and cocktail hour give you a good indication how your night is going to go. When I have a rough crowd I tend to also use slow dance songs like classics like My Girl and then throw another newer slow song. After that I hit them with an upbeat song.
Your exactly right…Im just started back up from djing in the 80s-90s…The generation now is a bit stubborn…but I will definitely try your advice!…thanks!
Funny how I’ve always unintentionally been mixing through dinner because I just didn’t want to sit around and let Automix do its thing. And you’re right it does loosen the crowd. Good stuff
Great video! Your videos really for me act as reassurance that I’m doing it right. But that last tip, I use a party starter at every corporate and wedding. It works man! I get group pics of the entire crowd at every event. If I have an assistant I get in the picture too. I agree with mixing the dinner music but half the events I do, I do not have an assistant or 2nd dj. So in those cases I’m not mixing the entire dinner as I need time to eat. But if I have a 2nd dj I will definitely mix the whole dinner. It’s more fun for myself and the crowd, plus it’s great intel and people are ready to party by hearing me mix all night prior to the dancing portion. It really does prep the crowd! Also separates you as the dj from all the other djs they’ve heard.
Just play "Old time Rock n Roll" especially if you have a Latin crowd, sometimes you need to play it like 3-4 times in a row, works ALL the time. We don't all do fancy pants gigs like you with napkins at the tables, paper napkins are at the buffet table, next to aunties famous macaroni salad.
I have had people out of their seats and dancing before dinner was over ! The servers and event staff loved that because the tables were cleared I got the event bck on schedule.
Really looking forward to implementing these tips...I have always tended use strictly acoustic/string music covers for dinner but it gets so stale for me! I am excited to utilize your lists into crates and give them a shot! Solid video once again!
Omg. Your so funny. And yep. You got me. Planning every detail of the whole night out. I got the prevention handling mixing orgaanicly down. Very helpful for me thank you sm! Hope I have my dance floor banging all night.
I don’t know if I’m the only one, but many of my clients choose the music during dinner. I mean, they often give me a list of 20 to 30 songs. I still try to mix it though
Ben Boylan I explain how important dinner is to the client saying that dinner is a great opportunity to get the guests loose and feeling good and creating a perfect vibe etc and I tell them how I like to play dinner for all the reasons I talk about in the video. If the client says they still just want to hear a certain genre or list, then I make do but I still mix the whole thing and pick out the most sing a longable songs in that genre they want to hopefully get people going.
I agree Nick that works great at private event parties like Bday, Anniversary or corporate parties. But need advice for midwest weddings where after dinner. We start the special dances and garter stuff. Then after that we do into dancing. So what do u think is a goood way to start without using a slide
Thank you so much for the info bro! Like always, I always look for new videos from you first thing because they're my favorite! Great content, real talk, and awesome personality! Keep up the excellent work man and I'm already anxious for the next one!
@@NickSpinelli no dinner for most weddings and once dancing starts, it goes until the end. More weddings here do provide snacks from Costco or Sam's club. Very few venues do in house catering.
The one time profiling is good and everyone has a good time, profile your crowd. Guess judging on how they look, try the majority, if it doesn't work switch genres and change your tactics is kind of what I do
You should make one for a bar/club. I’m always interested in seeing these. I have my own techniques down but I’m always trying to learn new things. Especially now that i am returning from the pandemic
Nick i just found your youtube page, i am a new DJ at a country club and would love a video on how to keep the crowd going other than line dances and 90s sing alongs! we play hip hop and stuff also so open to all tips!
Hey Cody, thanks for watching bro! I have a bunch of playlists that will definitely help you at sellfy.com/nick-spinelli - I will also have more videos in the future about how to play open format and keep people dancing. I REFUSE to play line dances lol
I love you, you’re too damn cute!!!!! I play mostly soul balads and Spanish boleros. My age group is 55 and up and they don’t seem to enjoy jumping anymore. Why is that? They would rather talk, oh well I’m sure they’re happy
HES RIGHT I WAS PLAYING MUSIC AT A WEDDING AND I HAD PEOPLE DANCING DURING DINNER. ITS ODD BUT I DIDNT MIND AT ALL .. 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄 Some guy was holding his dinner plate at the dance floor. now thats weird 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Dude, the Napkin game is ballsy! I'm gonna try it. Also, when do you eat if you're DJing during dinner. I can imagine rocking after toasts, but the whole time??
Nice video Nick. Curious if you could list a few tracks/artists that you play for "upbeat dinner music"? I tend to give my audiences a break from beats during entree, but am open-minded to experimenting with alternative techniques, particularly if they actually work.
Mixinh Frank sinatra into Shania twain during dinner doesn't seem to make a difference nor have the makings for it to even be mixed besides playing with the first words to the next song teasing it in.....
How do you pack your dance floor? Comment below!
Nick Spinelli by following your rules

"MIX DURING DINNER" - Exactly! And as an open format guy, a lot of the times mixing during dinner is my most enjoyable time of the night.
Nick.. what you said at 7:25 was probably the most reassuring thing I’ve heard from you yet.

If you can get the bride to dance then you have a built-in entourage that will follow. If the girls are dancing, the guys will follow.

Yessss!!
U had me at foreplay.
Downloaded your dinner list outta curiousity..and it's good. Added a couple of tracks to my dinner crates thanks mate.

Yeah they do! Same with Jersey

BEST TIP EVER, mix during dinner thats what i do, get em ready for the dance floor

Actual Factual!!! I always make it a point to mix during dinner, total game changer.

i learned to dj a lot during movie screenings networking events and its perfect for djing dinner
Really liked the first point and it’s so true

For a sick sample drop…
1. Turn on screen recorder
2. Play from 2:44 till 2:57 at 0.25x speed
3. Rip the audio
… you’re welcome. Enjoy fellow DJs.❤

Same exact way. Doesn’t matter when the formalities are. Just make sure you have people groovin during dinner
I just got this one, great job Nick! time to practice yeaaaa

This was super helpful, and I would love to hear your thoughts on club and bar dance floors as well

I do the napkin routine but I use three other props. It's my opener and it kills!!
As always, AMAZING content!
troymiller1 thanks Troy!
Great video, most of my weddings don't involve dinner. I go from the special dances to a banger to get them on the floor. I work slow songs in later.
So there's no dinner? We do a dance set right after formalities as well, but then they eat dinner...
@@NickSpinelli no dinner for most weddings and once dancing starts, it goes until the end. More weddings here do provide snacks from Costco or Sam's club. Very few venues do in house catering.

that 's what I want my floor pack
