1972 was the end of the MOD era; the Walk Lively (a fancier version of Walking Jamie, sold only at Sears at the time) series also made their debut that year. This was the final year for the talking dolls (with the Talking Busy series).
I had the brittish talking Barbie named Stacy in 1968. She had red hair and a regular Barbie body, no swivel. The Ken doll we had, had blonde molded in hair. We also had a teenage doll with long blond hair named Skipper.
Why is this commercial so long? Is it actually a bunch of different commercials cut together or is it actually some sort of promotional film for people in the company or something?
It sounds like it's promotional material for stores ahead of the yearly industry toy fair, letting retailers know about the exciting new products coming for that year, and how to sell them. I'm not sure where this would be shown. I want to know what those other top secret Barbie innovations were! 😄

Unless I miss my guess, it appears they used the Midge head to create the Busy Steffie in the sizzle.

How does that work
I had Tressy her hair grew too
You push her a button on her stomach and pulled out longer hair then you used a special key in her back to pull the hair back in

This looks like it's intended for toy store managers.
This is what's called a 'sizzle'. It is something that would be shown to the trade and to Mattel's accounts; Sears, K-Mart, Toys R Us, etc.
Her name was Steffie, not Pj
“A top secret barbie, doing something no barbie has done before.” Hmmm I wonder what this was? It sounds naughty lol
