The problem is already there for many years. It’s a big problem that the government can’t resolve. It’s bad to see that those people have to live in a small place, especially when they have kids.
@@chung16888 it is indeed a ingrained and deep seated structural problem. But unable? can't? hardly. The question is one of priority and political will. Thank you for sharing, this is the first time I know what a “sub-divided” flat looks like. In the UK, a studio flat is normally meant for a single person or max for a couple, not for a family with children! As Miss HK, I hope you will cover more of this kind of social issues that help to raise awareness especially to the foreigners plus local travel around HK. I remember watching a video of yours biking around New Territory, that was interesting and I have liked it for my travel to HK one day.
Thank you for this video that can let us know much more about the agony of living in such a small space. The Hong Kong government certainly needs to spend much more resources to help the all the vulnerable people who desperately need more living space.
Hong Kong is not lack of land to build affordable housing. Hong Kong felled into the trap of western style demonocracy, they voted for the representatives represent the dozens of oligarchs who control food, utilities, transportation, and communication. Do not forget, Hong Kong government acts on legislation/initiative from your elected representatives.
Its a legacy of british colonial to cramp as much real estate is such a small place. If Hong Kong was incorporated into mainland China system, it would have never allowed HK to be too overpopulated. So it's unfair to blame the current government of the wrongdoings from British colonial. There can be no solution to this problem, other than to displace people into mainland borders, what they are trying to do now with the greater bay area.
@@mikeevans6344 That is a lie. It's the capitalism that allows this to happen. It is totally fair to blame the current government because this has been going on for decades even after 97'. We all remember how the HK government promised to reform the housing policies and yet they are struggling to fulfill the promises while "discussing" the problem with the rich land developers. Every week there's complains on TVB current affairs about the problems with the handover of new public housing estates because of the lack of government oversight. There can be solution for this problem which is to curb the minimal size of housing but we know capitalism will never allow that.
I think seeking home in Hong Kong could be tough, as the pricing is pretty expensive. Also, families, who are living in subdivided apartments, have tough lives, which need to find assistance.

Actually according to Zoopla's UK Rental Market Report 2022, there has been a 12.3% rental price growth this year in the UK. Average rents have risen by £115 a month over the past year, reaching £1,051. The cost of renting in the UK varies greatly depending on the area you choose to look at, so can't really say for $6,600 you can get much better in UK or same prices for both two bedrooms and four bedrooms, living in sububran area versus living in the city is widely different. But on the other hand I do agree that Hong Kong's housing arrangements need to be look at seriously, which the government has already changed laws and contracts regarding landlords subdiving flats and I believe it will continue to change in a positive way.
The rental growth in the UK is mainly due to rising interest rates since Dec 2021, hence increased payments especially landlords with Buy to Let mortgages. Furthermore, there’s a slowdown in the Sales market so a buyer’s market if you can afford the financial commitments.
Yeah, a 2 bed house in london can easily be £2-3k 20-30k HKD or there about a pcm and then chuck your bills on top and now you can see why there are food banks and charity shops all over the place. It needed capping years ago but the government don’t give a 💩
I was always curious about the subdivided flats living conditions. There is no land in HK to develop for housing, which is why the waiting list is so long for the residents of HK. Thank you for doing this video. You are a caring person.
There is actually A LOT of free land in the New Territories up in the north, but most of it is owned by greedy landlords who just rent out the land for short term leases to containers parking. Their long term ambitions is for the government to offer them huge sums of money for their land.
exactly this is what my aunt's neighbor does. the owner divided his flat into 3 rooms! and rent out to 3 different household.. in his case each he charges around US $600. i'm lucky enough that my relatives in HK have their own apartment, some has 3-4 bedrooms apartment, i didn't know about the 劏房 until one of my Hong Kong friends told me.. i didn't know this is the reality in HK and I assumed my relatives live with the minimum, because even the private 3-4 bedrooms apartments are so small!!! then I dig more info and discovered this dark reality. I'm very sad to see many HK people living in horrible, uninhabitable so-called house, which is unfit for humans. If I were living in one of them, I would go mad or commit suicide. How can a family stay in 200 sq ft of space, encompassing a kitchen, living space, and bath? Just imagining such a situation makes me shudder.
