    In this second of six videos on helping you build your art website I am looking at domain names, popular platforms to consider using and the role of web hosts.
    And here's the link to the first video in case you missed it: • YOUR ART WEBSITE: I'm ...
    Domain names: what are they, ideas on what extensions to focus on, how to check if yours is available.
    Platforms: an introduction to Squarespace, Wix, Shopify and Weebly. Plus alternatives like WordPress.
    www.squarespac...
    www.wix.com/
    www.shopify.com/
    wordpress.org/
    www.weebly.com/
    The subscription platforms offer a lot of easy to use functions and make life a lot easier to get a website running but can limit the amount of options you have to change and customize your site. Wordpress is infinitely more flexible but will require more work and a higher skill level.
    Webhosts: lots available but I recommend Siteground - I host my WordPress site with them and they are amazing! Here is an independent review so that you can see how they compare to other webhost companies: www.techradar.... and another really in-depth one here: hosting.review...
    To sign up - if that's what you decide to do - then you can visit them here: www.siteground... - this is not a sponsored link but is an affiliate one. It's gets you access to best prices and earns me a small reward. Just want to be clear with that!
    Get ready for the next video in the series which will cover eCommerce, how to make your site secure, options to make your site look and feel how you want it to and the importance of optimizing for mobile devices.

    Really love WordPress, I use it for my own site and although there is a bit of a learning curve, once you get used to it, the platform is really phenomenal. So expandable, easy to add on functionality for an online store, payment processing, etc.

    Thank you! You make it simple and easy to understand; in fact you'd make a great teacher (I know 'cos I am one - but not very good and an artistically frustrated one)!! Oh, and by the way, there actually IS a really famous David Smith Sculptor!! Lol!! He was one of America's leading Abstract sculptors in the 1950s & 60s!!! Keep up the good work!

    Good sound advice Ed, if you can't get a domain name with your name in it ( taken ) try one with your geographical location ( Cotswold Landscapes, Grimsby Glass, Pennington Art Studio, that sort of thing )
    $30 a month is a good deal, I was paying $30 a month 10 years ago, and I wasn't getting much for that.

    Hi Ed, this is very useful, thank you very much. I went back to painting during covid, and got lost into it. My question is for starters, your paintings are liked by others such as open houses, but how would you know whether your paintings are of commercial interest? There are so many talented people... so I am not sure... any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you. Oz

    • @SwarezArt
      @SwarezArt  4 роки тому

      I don't believe that you can ever rate something as being of commercial interest? If an architect or interior specialist is remodeling or creating a commercial space then they may or may not have specific ideas about the role of art within it. I have found it's much more difficult to appeal to find commercial partners where my work fits in. I just make sure I always have as much big stuff, across as broad a range as possible, and hope for the best!

    Hello dearS, Well, I applaud your working with WP, and I just want to put out here, that there is a differencebetween Wordpress dot com and WP dot org, the 'org'site beingfriendlier to those who like to code. I use the .com because the themes are esay and I don't code. I've noticed two issues with WP lately, and dunno if you've dealt with this at all, but the set-up seems to have changed, and Jetpack (the stats service included) seems to have gotten modified to not include visitor stats from anything other than the initial post. It seems like several features have changed lately, and perhaps this has to do with the whole Winodws 7 discontinuance? I don't know, but I find myself looking at Squarespace now. Still, WP does have a lot to offer. I like your style, and thanks for the videos! :-)

      Agh! Typos abound! Alas.

    • @SwarezArt
      @SwarezArt  4 роки тому +1

      The core of WP is still better than ever even if they changed to the block editor last year (which takes a bit of getting used to). I have never used Jetpack - preferring other plugins to do the work of that one. Yes, big difference between .org and .com (which is their fully hosted equivalent. I concentrated on the .org self-hosted version as it does present an alternative. Thanks for pointing it out!

      @@SwarezArt Thanks for your reply, and sorry about the terrible typos. I should never try and type without my glasses! Doh! 8-) Plug-ins are confusing, and seem to be costly, depending on what's needed, but also essential. Thanks again, and carry on.

    Ed, another great video thank you can't wait for the rest of the series. I was thinking of going to Siteground and you have just confirmed it in the description. What are your views on domain names as some people are saying it should be short and others long? Unfortunately rahulsharma.co.uk is already taken and .com. So I looked at rsharmaartist.co.uk Cheers Rahul. NOTE: Ed, has suggested Siteground they are offering 3 months hosting for 99p. For the first three months.
