Is it hard to learn woodcarving? I know everything takes practice but is the general concept easy to pick up? I have been looking into a new hobby for awhile and wood carving has always had some interest to me.

Hello! I've been wanting to get into stuff like this, and because it looks like you know what you're doing i was wondering if you could give any tips to help me get started? Like what kind of wood is usually best and what not to do when carving, and anything else that may help.
Hey, beech or walnut wood is good for beginners. Try carve numbers and letters. Sweep chisel, V chisels and flat chisels are necessary.

What are the tools your using to carve the wood called? Chisels? and if so, do they have to have any specifications to them to be used on specific types of wood? Also, what is that thing your using to hit the back of them with to carve the wood?
Yes, woodcarving chisels are the tools. Sweep chisel, V chisel and flat chisel are most important.

But I'm terrified to buy as it's about $200. Is there some major difference from the ones a person can get from a local hardware store, or dare I say to use a dremel to sand down what you need for your design?

There is a lot of wood carving chisel sets on Amazon. I use Stubai Austria.
