The Long and Winding Road (take 19)- The Beatles (Guitar and Bass VI Cover)

- The film version of the song, recorded on January 31st, 1969. It features George Harrison on electric guitar and John Lennon on a six string bass
The album and single version of the song was instead recorded on Jan 26, 1969 and featured George on his Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar, with added leslie speaker effect. Check out my cover of this version- • The Long and Winding R...
Paul McCartney wrote this song in late 1968, and debuted it on January 9, 1969 at Twickenham Studios. The scene of him at the piano showing Mal Evans, Ringo, and his future wife Linda the song for the first time can be seen in the 2021 Peter Jackson documentary Get Back
On January 26th they recorded the album and single version of the song at 3 Savile Row's Apple Studios. As mentioned above, George used an acoustic guitar for this version, fed into a leslie speaker
After their famous rooftop concert on Jan 30th, they convened for the final day of the Get Back sessions on January 31st. The crew dimmed the lights of the Apple studio basement, and the Beatles completed Let It Be, Two of Us and The Long And Winding Road
I'm basing this cover off of the January 31st, take 19 version. The backing track consisted of Paul at piano, John on Fender Bass VI, George on his Fender Telecaster, Billy Preston on Fender Rhodes keyboard, and Ringo on drums. Footage of this recording can be seen in the Let It Be film (1970), 1+ music video, and Get Back: part three (2021)
Like the album version, George also used a leslie speaker for this recording. A Leslie is a rotary speaker used for organs to create the whirling effect. He played his 1968 Fender Rosewood Telecaster directly into the Leslie. He had a footswich available to go from slow to fast speed
For whatever reason, only on Jan 31st, George decided to use the metal pickup cover (also known as an ashtray cover) over his Telecaster bridge. These covers came new with Fender guitars, and George had just recieved the Tele weeks before, directly from Fender. He might've wanted the guitar to appear showier because they were delibarately filming songs that day for the film
I'm using a 2010's Fender made-in-Japan Rosewood Telecaster into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb. I put an ashtray cover over the bridge, like George. I'm using a Strymon Lex pedal, which simulates a Leslie speaker. You can see me switch from slow to fast speed throughout the song
Now, for John Lennon's bass part we have to talk about the Fender Bass VI. It's a six-string bass that is tuned exactly like a guitar- EADGBE, but an octave lower. The Beatles used this bass on the White Album, Let it Be and Abbey Road. For this song, John was plugged into a 1968 Fender Silverface Bassman amp
I'm using my 2022 Squier Classic Vibe Bass VI, with LaBella flatwound strings into my 1965 Fender Bassman amp. John would've also been using flatwound strings on his Bass VI at the time of this recording
Interesting playing quirks:
0:04 George plays a Bb/Ab 6X654X
0:25 George plays a Eb/Db X6666X
0:34 George moves from Cmin to Eb you can see him do this in the movie
1:02 John slides up the A string, after playing C
1:24 George switches to fast leslie setting
1:42 George switches to slow leslie setting
2:14 John slides up again after C
2:22 George switches to fast leslie setting
2:39 George switches to slow leslie setting
2:54 John plays second syncopated Low G note
2:57 George goes from Cmin to Cmin7
3:02 George switches to fast leslie setting
3:10 George does ascending blues lick on 8th and 10th frets, while John slides up the neck, ending with a clunk
3:26 John slides up the neck, ending on a high Eb. Then plays a high G to Bb on the high E-string
MY GEAR:
2010's Fender MIJ Rosewood Telecaster
2022 Squier Classic Vibe Bass VI (LaBella flatwound strings)
1974 Fender Silverface Pro Reverb
1965 Fender Blackface Bassman
Strymon Lex

Nice!! I've always liked Lennon's bass playing on this album, it has its own charm to it. And I love hearing the guitar part for this song too.
Once again, Sam Popkin shows us that with a good set of strings, a Bass VI can be used as *an actual bass,* firmly disproving all the naysayers.
Great work!
All of what naysayers; who ever said the Bass VI couldn't be used as a Bass?
Videos going in depth on the bass VI, every now and then you'll find some smoothbrain in the comments that thinks it magically doesn't have enough bottom end, even though logically, such a notion is ridiculous. @@Da_Publick
@@riogrande163 I'll never get tired of seeing 'smoothbrain' as an insult. 😂
Seriously, though, that really doesn't make any sense.
@@riogrande163 Oh, expect someone to explain that the strings of a regular electric bass are thicker than the
VI, so it'll sound deeper.
@@Da_PublickLabella's flatwound set has the bottom four strings in the same range of thickness as a typical lighter gauge bass set.
Maybe the .95 low E is on the lighter end, but a good EQ pedal could get you all the bottom end youd ever need.
Besides, if it was good enough for Jack Bruce to start out on, I suppose its good enough for most of us!
There are so many Beatles songs in which certain instruments are buried so far into the mix, you can’t hear them. Thanks for bringing them out!
Glad that you got this back again
I love that vague glissando on Lennons bass that doesn't quite meet the target note. It makes the song for me. 😁
Great job! Love that Tele and these covers with it!
John did a fine job in this version.
What an amazing sound!!
Fabulous!
Nice 🙌🙌👏
My favorite version of the song. It's baffling to me as to why Glyn Johns opted for that rough take 1, which in turn led to Phil Spector add that cringe inducing orchestra to it.
Your cover is always appreciated, Sam.
Your guitar tone is absolutely beautiful
Another great cover 🎉
Uffff!! Great Sam...❤😊😊
Go, Sam! Go!
Nice work as always
Accurate interpretation, love it ❤
Fantástico! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent
Wouldn't it be interesting to hear this take and the orchestra combined?
This take should have gone on the album
Hard not to be jealous of these guitars man, currently saving for a vintage something 😅. These types of covers are really helpful when you want to jam to songs which don't usually have guitar parts, so thanks for that!
Beautiful!!🥲🥲Can you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do Baby’s In Black soon?🥺🥺
I plan on it soon! I think there’s a rickenbacker 325 on it so not sure what to do there
@@sampopkinyou could do one of the live versions from ‘66 with two casinos? if you’re willing to subject yourself to those performances lol
@@sampopkin From what I can tell, the basic track is just John on his J-160 and George playing the Tennessean. Along with an overdub on the Tennessean again. No 325. By the way, can you PLEASE do Slow Down at some point. I've yet to see anyone do an accurate cover of it. There's a total of 4 guitar parts so it should be an interesting one.
@@sampopkinWant me to join in?
Nice one ❤
Genial Sam!
Great cover! Also, unrelated to your video, I just want to let you know that Denny Laine (October 29, 1944 - December 5, 2023), guitarist and occasional bassist of Wings, is now gone. Would also work as a tribute to him. May he rest in peace.
Beautiful!!! By the way the combination of guitars and sounds really suits the fall vibes, it really reminded us of thanksgiving, which is last month.
sounds like a lot of modern indie
Awesome cover, as usual, Sam! I always preferred this take over the chosen January 26th, 1969 take. Paul's vocals sound better and more genuine, as well as the piano track. A shame the performances of this Two of Us, and Let It Be Take 27B/28 from the original Let It Be movie were never included in The Beatles: Get Back, those performances were probably what I was hoping to see the most in the series besides the rooftop concert.
Could you do a guitar cover of Real Love please? 🙏
I just listened to the song I can hear the bass lines but don't hear the telecaster on the original recording by the Beatles
You’re probably listening to the album version, which was recorded on a different day. That included acoustic guitar
This one is take 19 on the Get Back box set, and is seen in the Let it Be film
How is the bass neck smaller than the telecaster's neck ☠️
Optical illusion
how is the squire 6? I'm getting one for Christmas!
They’re really good! They can feel a little plasticy and cheap, but sound great. Just get it set up nice and put on flatwounds and you’re good to go!
Thanks! could you do maxwells silver hammer? bass and guitar cover?
@@sampopkin
Una consulta, qué efectos programaste a la guitarra , aparte del trémolo, gracias.
I go through that in the description. My bass goes through my real 1965 Bassman amp. Telecaster into Strymon Lex pedal. I use waves plugins
Boy, that's sparse! No wonder they needed Phil Spector to come in and finish it. Are you sure these parts weren't just done by some studio musicians brought in by Phil?
This isn’t the take that made it on to the finished record. That was the roughed take from days earlier that Sam covered before. This take was in the movie, let it be naked, & the 2020 mixes (it’s my personal favourite) .
My personal favorite too because it’s sparse. This is the Let it Be naked version and it’s all Beatles, no Spector
Why is it so quiet?
I mixed it too quiet :(
Well obviously that's the reason. it's like asking "why didn't you practice?" and you say "cuz it didn't practice", stupid answer if you ask me.
Just kidding Sam I love your videos.❤😂@@sampopkin
@@sampopkinI don't know if you can see it but after the 'keep reading' I say I'm joking and I absolutely love your channel ❣️
No offense taken 😁
But you touch on a good point, which is that I have trouble matching output/volume of my videos
@@sampopkin well, I am no sounds-man myself but if I were you I would have adjusted it to too high then too low to grab attention.
