The British discovered New Zealand in the very early 1800s, possibly even earlier. It was a large, arable, two-island land inhabited by large numbers of Maori tribal natives, whose own ancestors colonized New Zealand around 700-800 A.D. New Zealand's human society resembled tribal Germania from the time of Caesar to Marcus Aurelius. It was populated by many powerful tribes constantly at odds and in conflict with each other. The violence was unending, no one knowing when it started and no one possibly envisioning an end to it. Tribal warfare and the killing of enemy Maori tribesmen were natural to the Maori. When the English showed up, the Maori did not know what to make of these, fair-complexioned foreigners, 'Pakeha'. But one thing the Maori quickly discovered and deeply coveted was the English flintlock musket. Rather than the risky gambit of stealing flintlocks, the various Maori tribes vied to purchase however many flintlock muskets from the British at almost any price. Thus began a profitable business back in England of mass-producing cheap flintlock muskets. Cheap did not mean dangerous low quality leading to exploding barrels. The workmanship and craftsmanship were kept to a bare minimum to produce as many cheap, trade muskets as possible. At this time, international trade in modern firearms was not regulated by European governments. The English traders and whalers began selling large numbers of flintlock muskets to the many Maori tribesmen, who apparently did not care that the foreigners were selling firearms to everyone's tribal enemies as well. The inter-tribal warfare in New Zealand escalated with the widespread use of modern gunpowder smoothbore muskets, and the body count rose even higher. It served the British long-term purpose well of securing land rights in New Zealand for British colonists the Crown's land interests. In time New Zealand would become a British Crown colony and thus would also begin a number of Maori-Anglo Wars of the latter 19th century.
Well said 👏, we can put many of the worlds issues down to colonialism but once you scratch beneath the surface, the real issue is just mankind, history constantly repeats itself over and over again in the same loop but in a more hidden/sophisticated way.

It isn't based on a true story, it's about a Preacher, a missionary and his experiences with the Maori people of New Zealand back in the 1830's hoping to convert them. It's been said the movie is based on events taken out of the diaries of two sailors. What I would say though is that the savagery of the Maori people back then is accurate in this movie. And no it has nothing to do with how New Zealand "Became".

I'm for sure not a fan of the modern term "toxic masculinity" and how it's so frequently and inaccurately applied...but when it comes to the insanely exaggerated posturing and "might makes right" culture of the old school Maori tribes...the term definitely applies. Glad to see they have adapted and outgrown most of that foolishness.
Lol... Oh man, I'm pretty sure both of those qualities have been the rule rather then the exception throughout all of Human History... "Might is Right" is still the Law of the Land to this very day. Just because we have sublimated our more primal, bestial inclinations into a form that appears more "civilized" and "socially acceptable" doesn't mean we have outgrown them by a long stretch. Infact, having blanketed them by a thin veneer of respectability and dignity in many ways is more despicable and deceptive then in the so called primitive day's. At least you knew who your enemy was then.
