    I've done a similar setup for about four years now. It works great. I live in central Texas so no problems with snow. The thing I like about it is it is self cleaning and the leaves don't get wet so they blow off when it is windy (most all the time here). I usually wind up doing these things by my self also.

    I've seen videos using exercise balls and ropes... I like your PVC idea because it seems like it would support the weight of snow better. My problem is that the water must not see sunlight. In the winter, we add chlorine and algaecide to prevent bio fouling. But UV will break down those chemicals and eventually allow the water to begin turning green. I used a cover with a siphon pump last year, but the water on top was gunky and a bunch of junk poured into the pool. Took forever to clean that out. I purchased a top that has reinforced grommets around the periphery. My plan is to use a cable to pull the top tight and let the water spill off the cover, but without a bunch of supports, the cover will stretch and tear. I don't know what the final solution will look like yet but I appreciate your ideas- it has sparked a few thoughts.

    What is keeping the rain, ice and snow out? It will still fill up

    I have done this 2 yrs in a row. 1st year blue water, worked great. 2nd year lots of leaves got stuck in the mesh about impossible to remove. Not like a tarp that you can rake off. It eventually drops in and turns your pool brown. So this year it’s back to a regular cover. I have a pool tree that at least keeps a cover above the water. Problem is water collects and with no where to go it sinks the cover. I honestly believe you have the right method just need a stronger structure. Aluminum would prob work with capped holding poles sunk in around the pool. Remove caps put poles in and connect spokes to center spoke. I tell you, it just isn’t worth the hassle for 3 months of pool time in the north.

    Put large pool noodle over pipes and connections to stop it from rubbing on the pool linner

    Like you, I am in snow country with many trees within 40 feet of the pool. (Tempted to cut them all down, but like the shade too) So saw the first attempt fail, thanks for trying. Sorry, I do not have any suggestions or a solution! Just 3 insights on this fish-net attempt (for me at least.) (1) Hopefully you are correct that snow will go right through the net. We often get sleet...so I am concerned the mesh net gets wet, freezes up, and gets coated (over and over) with snow/sleet until less and less of the snow gets through, so the mesh net gets heavy and tears? And using a mesh with larger holes will let the leaves through. Additionally, if too many leaves are stopped by the net, but the leaves rest on the net, I imagine they will get wet, freeze, block snow, and again weight will tear mesh net. (2) we have maple and ash trees that drop those helicopter seeds in the spring, which will pass through the net. At least it will stop the leaves. (3) Biggest concern with a mess net is it lets the sunlight through. I think that means until the surface freezes, the sunlight will feed the algae growth, e.g. if like me you put the cover up in September but the deeper freezes do not come until November. Opaque covers I think prevent the chlorine from decomposing, and/or at least the algae grows much slower without sunlight with opaque covers. Bottom line: cheap pool pillows are worthless under the snow weight. I aim to try tractor inner tubes stacked 3 high with a fitness ball at the top this year. Good luck!

    I bet that would work great for black flies, horse flies, and deer flies.

    My problem with my above ground pool is sand/dirt getting in my pool when I don’t cover it up, but having an access pool ladder, I have to disassemble it before covering it. Any other suggestions on covering the pool without disassembling ladder?

    Pretty cool idea almost looks like a satellite dish cover those big satellites that used to be around maybe about 20 years ago. Pretty cool idea though I mean as long as it lasts it should be good

    How did it hold up in the winter? I want a year round dome cover that will let sunshine/tanning in but keep bugs and debris out! I have built it but need some cross connectors 4 way that will fit 3/4” conduit electric grey pipe- does anyone know where I can get some?

    Did you put a pool cover underneath that mesh tent?

    • @JUSTTRYITDIY
      @JUSTTRYITDIY  Рік тому +1

      no I didn't. I was hoping the net would catch all the leaves and let the snow fall through....it did catch the leaves but the snow still collected on it. this last winter I took off the net after the leaves all fell and before the snow and it worked well, I will be doing this from now on.

      first time just a cap and it left an indent in the liner. next year, I use a cap with a cross simular to the top to displace the weight, and that worked great. still using it that way.

      On some pipes I put a 90° elbow on to help keep it in place, not sure it really made a difference. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching.

      there are a few things to consider. do you get snow? also with a bigger pool you will need to add some length to each pipe and that joint could be a spot to add more support. please take a look at my other videos on my pool. especially the fail one. good luck!

    Wow looking at your two pool cover videos makes me not want to see any of your DIY ideas. There is a reason pool covers are designed the way they are. With mesh the pool will be filthy in the spring. With no pillow in freezing temps your pool wall will get pushed out by the expanding ice. It's not difficult to maintain a pool cover, a leaf rake and a small pump and it's simple.
