I hate to admit it, but I am part of the problem. I would always say that once I finished school and wasn’t working three jobs that I would be able to change my diet. But now I work full time with no school and still not doing it. Great video, and a good reminder that I need to do better. I would love to see more vegan related videos. Hey I think you should check out cheap lazy vegan. She has a UA-cam channel where she shares simple and healthy recipes, that helped me a lot in saving time and money.
Love your post. It's not easy to admit to be part of a problem. I hope you find the info you need. I suggest to start slowly by reducing meat and then maybe no more meat, etc. This way is more sustainable and less pron to failure and giving up. Check out unnatural vegan, she is science based and also teaches about potential problems and problematic things other vegans speak about.
I brought the eat meat sparingly commandment up quite a few times over about a 25 year span to various members and bishops ; always got the same response, "that's not what it means " haha
Michael Taylors There is a UA-cam video called “Return to Sparingly” that shows what early prophets specifically taught. It’s exactly what it means! If we care to suppose what the WoW means we have to look at history (too painful) and first see that it was borrowed from other religions which we were going to out-gun. We then have to see that the first 5 presidents of the church all saw it very differently and all said "to Never be forced," and they did use the 4 don'ts within reason and sold them at ZCMI till just after 1900. Not what we thought or were taught? How did BS replace truth? No force, no shaming, coercing, commanding or constraining or judging which all 5 1800's presidents of the church warned of as the reason to Never command the WoW. We don't see that anywhere in correlated material? Of course not. Why so many sick and dying around us in church (if you still go) or too sick and dying to come out? They live "the WoW" religiously but don't have a clue what the WoW means or could mean: Keep it wholesome and healing and just ditch the poison counterfeits coming down the pike?
Keep up the great work! I'm ex-LDS also after 40 years in the church. Got out in 1992 thankfully! I'm involved in working with ex- LDS and Jehovah's Witnesses to assist them in getting out of these damaging cults and surviving. I do this online and also in real life by subscribing to several creators I get productive ideas to help others! I get GREAT ideas from you! Thank you!
How do you help? Are you a therapist? Do you help people know how to deal with getting out, when they have young kids, and the spouse still wants to go and feels hurt by the other trying to get out of the religion? Asking for a friend ;)
@@ex-mormonthanos9439 I am not a therapist although I do hold a degree. I am a teacher. That being said my experience mostly lies in counseling LDS people who are questioning the church and don't know where to look for resources or help.
I never knew this, thank you. The way you put it the clarification can be understood as "only eat meat when it is necessary to survive" and this really is a very vegan massage.
from a Vegan, thank you, thank you! I have tears in my eyes, bc I'm scared. we need as many people on board with this as we can get, at this point...❤🌎🐾
Climate Change issues are the best arguement for plant based diets 👍 I've also heard the "Jesus will come and fix the planet" excuse more times than I feel comfortable with.
No climate change is only an argument for reducing meat and milk. The only argument that brings you necessarily all the way to veganism is animal rights.
@bethanynoakes sadly when I was young (teen and early 20s) I used that bypass belief that Jesus will come and fix everything 🤦 I'm so ashamed for what I thought when I was Mormon!
Redhead 21 besides … arrest and reverse heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, dementia, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, erectile dysfunction, eczema, acne, obesity, and nearly every other common human disease process.
OMG! My wife and I are ex Mormons and a major reason why we left the church is because we are vegan and the amount of push back that we received from the church members over our deciding not to participate in the destruction of the planet was ridiculous. When my wife found out about the church owning cattle ranches, that was the last straw for my wife. It’s just unconscionable that a church that claims to represent Jesus Christ would participate and profit from such a truly abhorrent industry. That’s why I can never give one more penny to the church. If you ever watch slaughter house footage you will see how horrific the practice is.
it took me years. but I'm Vegan now, &I'm so happy I am. if anyone reading this has thought about it, ease into it like I did, if it would be easier. anyone can do this!
aubrey oh wow that's so wonderful! ive been vegan for close to 5 years. it makes me so happy seeing more people being receptive to it. I went to an Animal Rights March yesterday with around 500 other people. it was to speak out for Animals in Agriculture, Aquatic Animals, Animals used for Fur, who are tested on & who perform in circuses etc. the reactions we got from many people was amazing. California also passed 2 laws for animals recently. one will ban the sale of fur by 2023. the other bans animals used in circus acts. the world is waking up. ❤
I once brought up the "eating meat sparingly" aspect of the word of wisdom during a church lesson, and was immediately told "We're not going to discuss that. It's a bit too controversial." ...5 minutes later there was an open discussion about whether medicinal marijuana was okay. You know Mormons are big on their meat when pot is legitimately less "controversial" than whether it's healthy to not eat meat for every single meal.
Alice There is a video by an active mormon called “Return to Sparingly” that shows quotes from the early prophets about not eating meat and it’s set to churchy music. Those quotes might help sometime
I became a vegetarian at the age of 12 due to my morals not allowing me to eat another living creature, and I got shamed by soooo many of my Mormon leaders. They even quoted scripture at me. It was really weird, but I never wavered haha
Thanks! Such a valuable video. I've been mostly vegetarian and occasionally vegan since I was thirteen in 1970. My yoga teacher introduced me to the idea of living well by causing as little harm and distress to life as possible. She was 76 and had encouraged her own healing, so wished to share all the goodness she had learnt and experienced. So I heal well. Though I have t2diabetes, genetically predisposed and high levels of cortisol, I am recovering because of making a few small changes. I didn't have a lot to change. A dear friend who grew up in the Midlands with her mother as vegetarian and doing yoga in their English country garden, to the entertainment of neighbours and passers-by, was amazing. Annie was born in 1911, lived through WWI, and then WWII in the east end of London during the blitz with five small children and a dog, singing shouting lullabies under a blanketed table to drown out bombs and sirens, in the east end to be near her husband when he had short leave times. She wrote poetry and made her own soycheese. She admitted to an occasional indulgence in a lemondrop🙂 They emigrated to Australia. She was a small fit healthy lady until 94years of age when she got a flu and afterwards was worn-out tired. A few months later she fell asleep. 🙏✨💗 Inspirational woman.
My daughter and her family have been vegan for over thirty years, when it was hard to be vegan. No one knew what a vegan was, and they were considered odd balls not to be taken seriously. Fast forward to 2019. In January my husband had a heart attack and had a quadruple bypass surgery. As soon as he was able he went into the cardio fitness program. Our doctors are all part of a huge university and are on the cutting edge. His rehab lasted for two and a half months. He went two days a week for 4 hours. They were introduced to a plant based diet, and they had a chef who prepared delicious vegan diet. My hubby went in wholeheartedly, He exercises faithfully, and he has become a total vegan. It is cute to hear him call my son in law to ask questions about preparing tofu. He used to be one of those guys who would laugh at tofu and said he would never eat it, We eat better than we ever have, and we are both feeling better! Vegan is the way to go!
This is amazing! Ive been living a vegan lifestyle for a year and a half now. Thanks for the reminder and the encouragement. I would love to bring this up to my active LDS dad and family who constantly bash me about being vegan.
Katelyn Jewkes Watch the video “Return to Sparingly,” which shows early prophets’ quotes and and example about not eating meat. It is produced by active mormons and set to “spirit-filled” music. Maybe your family will listen to that. 🤷♀️
I don't eat meat (I've been vegetarian since 2016) because I'm autistic and have sensory issues. I can't stand the taste and texture of meat. In my big Mormon extended family, I'm the only vegetarian. I really love dairy though, so I can never go vegan. I eat fish sparingly, like once a year. Eating a ton of meat, especially red meat, is the exact opposite of being good for people. But I'm always told I need protein 🤔
That introduction is a load of crap. If certain ideas are foolish and stupid, the people who subscribe to those ideas are by definition foolish and stupid, and *_of course_* they are offended to be called stupid fools. That being said, don't stop what you're doing...because you are absolutely right.
Thank you for being a public voice about this topic. Need more people taking it seriously. More leaders in the food industry at least. Great video summary
I've been trying to reduce the amount of meat I eat, but damn I know I could be doing so much better. Thank you for the reminder! Awesome video, as usual!
This video is so beautiful and validating for me. Thank you. When i turned 17 I made an appointment with my bishop. I brought my d & c and read sec 89 about only eating meat in times of cold or famine, and also read him the sixth commandment. This was southern Calif - not cold, abundance of food year round. He said, oh THAT was for the olden days, not now. I replied, so then we can smoke and drink now too? He told me to go fast and pray to strengthen my testimony. Shortly after, my family figured out I was gay and threatened my life. I fled far from them to live my best gay vegan life ever since. That was 1973. Before my mom died in 2014 she actually said she hopes I find a really wonderful woman. I was proud of her for finally breaking through her lifetime of conditioning a bit, although she lived decades in guilt for drinking a little coffee, yet ate meat carefree along with the rest of the family and church.
Fun fact: Around the year 1900, abstaining from meat was an important and emphasized part of the Word of Wisdom. Abstaining from pork was emphasized between about 1860 and 1900 or perhaps later. My grandmother (born in 1905) avoided pork her whole life based on her understanding of the Word of Wisdom.
I love this! Going vegan and becoming an activist for animals has helped me find purpose again after Mormonism. The reason why mormons don’t eat meat sparingly, I’d become the LDS church owns some of the biggest cattle ranches in Florida.
Alissa Jones They’ve been the largest privately-owned, for-profit (for-prophet? lol) cattle ranchers of the US. For one year (‘97?) they were the largest in the world. So destructive and disrespectful
Hannah James Same! I relate to this so much! I’ve been trying to go vegetarian at the very least but giving up dairy is way harder. Someday I’ll go vegan, I just don’t know how.
@@hannahjames6033 a great please to start is by youtubing 'dairy is scary'! it's a 5 min video on the whole industry and is absolutely heartbreaking, should set you off dairy for sure. there's also a video by the same girl about the egg industry. also, whilst vegan cheese isn't quite there yet, it's getting better and better each year, and products such as oat milk, miyoko's butter/cream cheese/etc. and non-dairy ice cream make it so easy to give up dairy products! it's a process so be patient with yourself, but you'll get there! it's so so worth it.
Hannah James there are lots of fun ways to make cheese substitutes. Cashews, Nutritional yeast, agar powder, and tapioca starch will be your best friends. I make my own “plant based” cheeses all the time. It’s a great way to exercise your creativity. Pinterest, and UA-cam have lots of non-dairy cheese recipes. Good luck! - from a vegan former cheese addict.
Thank you! I shared this on my Facebook page. Other members disregarding this was one of the most frustrating parts of being LDS. But then so many people in my ward in Utah were cattle ranchers or dairy farmers. Oh, well, God ordered people in The Old Testament to sacrifice animals every day, anyway, so it's not like that God actually cares about them (or humans for that matter). Fortunately as a free thinker, I'm able to practice better morals than that God. I've been vegan for 16 years now, before it was fashionable. I'm so happy to hear that Samantha and Tanner are vegan as well!
You hit on a huge issue about meds. The scripture and word of wisdom clearly point to natural.medicine and most church leaders have ignored it and some have even opposed it. This is reason enough to challenge or leave them .
Your videos have helped me have several very good and non-confrontational conversations with some Mormons who came to my door. One left the religion and went home and two more seem close. It was a lot easier after starting to understand the culture they are in and your videos explain that very well! Thanks for the tips! I'll be talking to them this week again ;)
Sam, what are your thoughts on lab grown meat? Assuming it can be developed using green production methods (low and/or no green house gas production), would you look down upon / be unsupportive of the consumption of lab grown meat?
I'm an atheist and scientist, and I find with so many atheist they have this weird similarity or shared experience with Christianity, meaning they become consumed by doom and gloom/ end times. Many Christians have their sin and society, and many atheists have their pollution and climate change. It's funny how that always seems to work out between two opposing groups. Any who, climate control/ pollution is a huge problem, but there is much being done to curb it, plant burgers for starters. Holy shit, they are getting that right! Problem with vegetarian diet is it's boring and taste that way, but with the invention or perfection of plant meat substitutes it will change people's desire for meat, essentially they will still get the taste of murder but with none of the slaughter. This is a huge and essential step. Again, science saving the day, or helping significantly. All the preaching and sincerity won't change appetites, stemming from thousands of years of evolution. You have to manipulate it and channel it in a less destructive way. People won't give up cars for bikes, but hey, we can reinvent the car and make it solar power, wind power etc, which is happening. We can get rid of plastics and learn to live without so much Walmart throw away crap. I guess my main complaint with video is we aren't Christians don't use an outdated tactic to persuade human behavior, like preaching, or scare tactics. Use science, that is the Atheist "God/ salvation" or better way of looking at it our process to help society.
I love you for this! Well who am I kidding, I love you for many reasons, but when I heard you were vegan I was just like “See!?! They definitely know what’s up!!” Haha. Thanks for helping get this message out! The whole word of wisdom hypocrisy thing has rubbed me wrong for years!
I have a question; I'm working on transitioning to a plant-based diet, and am happy to jump to being vegetarian since I don't love meat, so this isn't so much about persuading me to change, but regarding the statistic you gave about going vegan saving so many resources, since the market is so expansive, does one person going vegan actually make that significant difference? Will my lack of demand be noticable, or is this something that would be needed en mass to really make a change?
We definitely need people to go vegan en mass to make a significant difference! But the vegan movement is growing exponentially and as demand for vegan products increases, so does their availability, meaning that even carnivores are more willing to buy vegan versions of things! (Because they’re getting better all the time!) I think you have to commit to what you think is right and not fall into the despair that can come from “but I’m only one person!” thinking. It’s true, you are, but every major movement/change creator is made up of individuals! 💜
No need to apologize, Samantha. If you’re ruffling Mormon feathers, you’re doing it right. You’d think they could take it, because they certainly dish it. Excellent and critical content. Nice tie-in to the WoW, a doctrine which, as you correctly state, the Mormons cherry pick and apply inconsistently.
I am trying to reduce meat because of ethical and environmental reasons. It's hard because my spouse is not on board at all and very stubborn. Most of the meals that I eat on my own are vegetarian.
My dudes! I just saw you guys at SLC VegFest. Didn’t have the courage to say hi, so I ended up just taking some creepy photos instead. And wtf, y’all are insanely beautiful. Must be the veganism! ;)
Ok sam. I hear you. I see your stories on instagram. Fine. I'll make a change to my diet. But you're right. And I know you're right. The planet is dying and so is its people. You have been truly inspired to share this message with us today. It was just what I needed to hear. I Thank the mormon God for blessing me with this video today. It must be bc I paid my tithing. (Lame attempt at an Exmo Joke)
I'm ex Mormon and recently found your channel. I remember trying to go vegetarian as a teenager and my parents told me I shouldn't because "God put them on this earth for us to use."
I am a meatgoatfarmer and I agree with you. Eat as litle meat as possible. Eat meat grown by natural grazing in areas not suitable for farming vegetables, like mountain areas. My goats have great lifes and then they repay me with food.
While I was a BYU-I I tried drawing attention to this clear definition. Unfortunately, as you know, Rexburg basically spends half the year give-or-take in cold months; especially by the standards of my native Arkansas. The WoW becomes more problematic as a commandment when you consider it also demands homemade wine for the sacrament. That means the fact that we use water has two grave consequences. 1) The Church itself makes it impossible to be worthy of a recommend or 2) the President of the Church gets to contradict Christ himself.
I'm an ex mormon :) I have greatly reduced my meat intake. Not really on purpose, either. I was diagnosed with Crohns Disease a year and a half ago, and that has greatly limited my diet. I had to go through a lot of trial and error to figure out which foods were causing my pain and other issues. I can't go completely vegan because I am very limited in what vegetables I can eat as well, and how much. I already have to take a multivitamin every day to make up for what nutrients I'm not getting, so it's very difficult for me.
While we know too much red meat isn’t healthy for a human diet, I question the validity of your claim that veganism is the healthiest diet. I have not seen a shred of evidence that any diet is the “healthiest” diet for everyone, as most literature claiming this is significantly flawed. Could you share where you got that claim?
You’re right that there’s no single healthiest diet for absolutely everyone, but the evidence overwhelmingly supports the idea that plant-based veganism is the best one we know of. Some of the largest, longest nutrition studies ever conducted support this. Again, highly recommend checking out Mic the Vegan’s videos-SO much good science!!!!
About 9-10 years ago when I went vegetarian (and eventually vegan) and I told my tbm MIL, she got all defensive and told me that she wouldn't be changing her diet unless the prophet came out and said we should 🤦🤦 I have to say now, they are egg and dairy free and barely eat any meat. So .... 🤷
Yes! Thank you! I always tell progressive minded friends and family or anyone, that if you really care about the environment you would AT LEAST cut your meat consumption down, at the very least! It’s not that hard.
Do you think switching most livestock to open pastures instead of factory farms would help curtail the environmental problems? It would certainly help alleviate the animal suffering.
Wow! Sam you're a great speaker. You come across so peacefully and clearly. Thank you and thumbs up!! Such a good point to bring up that they do not even follow their own doctrine once again. 💖 I went vegan this year in april. I got shingles about 2 weeks after and have gone through so much emotional processing of just so many things and feel so awakened. Also tired of people's rude comments. But I know most of them wouldn't go cut up a cow or pluck a chicken etc. So I just hope they make the connection and realize they can eat less meat at least. It feels so much better. I know some people can't make it work or can't afford it or figure it out right now but to start just increase raw fruit and veggie intake especially bananas if anyone is reading this who is interested. I also used to hate eating and I sometimes counted calories. Now I LOVE eating and I eat when I want to eat! I no longer get grossed out by what I may be eating and I love that. Sam❤ if you're still reading this i need some advice if you want, I'm married and have been for almost 7 years. I'm insecure and jealous. Right now we don't have time for friends but if my husband had female friends idk if I'd even want to be married. I don't want to feel like this. I love how you and tanner are such great friends and you're not romantic and your relationship seems so pure and good. I have been hurt and very manipulated in my life and controlled by purity doctrine and church and my parents mostly my mom wer horrible role models. My mom was always so jealous of women and asking him all kinds of questions all the time obsessively accusing and talking about hypotheticals. I already screwed up my important relationship in hs. Now I'm 32 and married to the only person I ever want to be with and I worry about the future bc of how insecure I am. I ask myself is it even possible for men to have female friends who I can be okay with and trust. I do trust him just not other people. I have been harassed by lots of men in relationships too so I always think my husband must be the same. Idk sory about this long thing but if you have any words for me I'd appreciate itm I don't want to be a b*tch and not let him have friends later on if we have time again for that stuff. Thanks anyone who reads this 💖 sometimes when I watch these I wonder if you (Sam) or Tanner have an S.o. who gets jealous. I wish I wasn't like this!
Tonight I ate quesadillas made with vegan cheese and Ezekiel tortillas, with kale, mushrooms, and yellow bell pepper! In case that’s interesting haha. I don’t eat vegan cheese that often but I do like it :)
I went vegetarian about 2.5 years ago. I’m trying to consume less dairy but it’s really hard when its in everything! Ive been trying to get my family to be more on board with being flexatarian and just eat meat sometimes. My mom is really good at it but my mormon family members aren’t. They know how much it affects climate change but they ignore it. They won’t admit that they believe the second coming will happen first.
I'm not a "religious" person but I am spiritual. It is pretty cool that Mormonism has that teaching. It's kind of like Kosher for the Jews. Coming from Roman Catholicism, I wish the Vatican would make "meatless" Fridays all year long (not just for Lent) so people would cut back on meat and dairy.
From a vegan ExMo THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! Go vegan everyone!! It's the best and most scientifically proven way to lessen your carbon footprint!!! And it really does do wonders for your health! My brother is a top notch gastroenterologist and tells ALL his patients to go plant based to tackle many of the common ailments our western diet brings on! It's really not as hard as you think!
Sam, could you talk about coffee in future videos? Cus I don't drink coffee even tho I already left the mormon church. I had a friend that was addicted to it and it scared me. If you show those studies you talked about, it would be very helpful. Anyways, thx for this video, I've been a vegan for years now!
I wouldn’t say it “pales”. There are certainly other significant factors, yes, but how the world eats and uses land is huge, as the new UN report highlighted.
I think that I eat less meat now than I did as a Mormon. I still eat some meat, I have dietary restrictions fructose, lactose and a few other things, and as you said, " times of famine. If I didn't eat meat I'd probably be malnourished. Having said that though, I'm discovering new vegetables all the time and am rather enjoying the learning how to cook with them, and I'm interested to follow various university studies in which they are "making" meat (from DNA) in labs. It's predicted to be a hit (I heard about it at uni).
Mic the Vegan is fantastic! Earthling Ed is amazing, too, as an example of how to stay calm while speaking to others about veganism. And The Joyful Vegan (Colleen), is wonderful, too.
I wish I could go full vegan, but I can't due to a few health conditions I have, but I am cutting out dairy, store bought meat, and all beef and pork. I got a deer hunting license for the first time in 7 years, and hopefully we get one. Deer are super over populated in my area due to the killing of natural preditors like grey wolves because of cattle farms. I also catch a lot of fish myself. I live walking distance from a stocked lake, which is nice, and I'll miss that when we move. I have raised free range chickens before too, but this year we couldn't, but luckily my family did. I live in a super rural area so vegan options for anything are rare and hard to find since we only have 2 full sized grocery stores in the whole county and one is a Walmart. I try not to to shop at Walmart unless they are the only ones in the area who have what I need.
What you say is important and true. Thank you. BUT just FYI...the modern understanding of a term is often not what was meant by a leader of the church. This recently happened when people didn't understand that 'translation' meant 'inspiration' in JS's time. So fyi, 'sparingly' meant 'after you spar with it.' and 'meat' was referring to tapirs which were near Extinction in JS's time. It's a misunderstanding, because terms change over time, it takes 'Apologists' and 'Church Spokesmen' to interpret doctrine correctly. Also, tho members misunderstood when their leaders told them, for decades, that 'hot drinks' meant 'caffeinated drinks.' because of the drug caffeine. But we were informed that we all misunderstood, that was never doctrine, when the church bought into the soda pop industry. It was then they realized that all these misunderstandings of that doctrine were out there. So now, nobody knows why coffee isn't allowed, but that's what faith is for. BYU Didn't have caffeinated sodas for decades because 'nobody really asked for it,' according to the church spokesman. Not because it was a doctrine.
Now research is indicating that hot drinks really do have a harmful effect on out esophagus. Coffee and tea, however, show great benefits to the health of users. I haven't eaten meat, fish, fowl, nor shell fish in 27 years and I've never missed it.
I saw a bear eat a deer. Consuming its innards while it was still alive and screaming in pain. I dispute the idea that they suffer less in nature than a quick death at a slaughterhouse. Livestock are still environmentally damaging though.
That deer wasn’t tortured and denied the ability to act out its instincts for its entire life up to that point. But deer aren’t really factory farmed, ha.
If you take all meat from your diet don’t just think about where you get protein but, what amino acids you are likely to miss. This is especially true for children. I think it would be very difficult to get proper nutrition for a growing child on a vegan diet. I am not a big meat eater. I just worked for thirty years conducting research in poultry nutrition. We could see the effect of changing the the ratio of amino acids. It makes me nervous when children are vegan.

Climate Change issues are the best arguement for plant based diets 👍
I've also heard the "Jesus will come and fix the planet" excuse more times than I feel comfortable with.
Actually the plant based diet literally does nothing
No climate change is only an argument for reducing meat and milk. The only argument that brings you necessarily all the way to veganism is animal rights.
@bethanynoakes sadly when I was young (teen and early 20s) I used that bypass belief that Jesus will come and fix everything 🤦 I'm so ashamed for what I thought when I was Mormon!

I went vegan suddenly in april and haven't gone back! How long have you been
aubrey oh wow that's so wonderful! ive been vegan for close to 5 years. it makes me so happy seeing more people being receptive to it. ❤
@@mayganphynix8267 that's amazing and so sad also that it is almost 2020 and we are this far behind
Everybody wants to help save the environment unless it means that they have to change something in their routine that is convenient to them.
now that is a prophetic comment.
Ughhhhhhhh
Alice There is a video by an active mormon called “Return to Sparingly” that shows quotes from the early prophets about not eating meat and it’s set to churchy music. Those quotes might help sometime
I became a vegetarian at the age of 12 due to my morals not allowing me to eat another living creature, and I got shamed by soooo many of my Mormon leaders. They even quoted scripture at me. It was really weird, but I never wavered haha
As a fellow ex-Mormon and current vegan I really appreciate you making this video. Great work as always!
I really should at least reduce my meat intake...
Any amount you can reduce is valuable! ✌🏻
No. Go local and only local
Redhead 21 Going local won’t fix all the health problems meat in excess causes.
I’m going to start by just eating chicken instead of beef.
Daisy like what??? Don’t give me the whole carcinogenic crap. Let’s not forget your precious veg has oxalates.

Nice reminder, Sam! I really need to take a closer look at my diet. Thank you!
I think there is a parallel between Ex-Mormonism and Veganism. Waking up to the fact that something you've been doing your whole life is wrong.....
Chris Hatch yes definitely. ive gone from Christian to athiest and Carnist to Vegan. both experiences where very similar for that reason.
Great video and information! Let’s hope many will follow this advice. It really is insane what’s going on.
Such a brilliant video...thank you...so glad my friend shared this with me....I will be sharing it too now...
That introduction is a load of crap. If certain ideas are foolish and stupid, the people who subscribe to those ideas are by definition foolish and stupid, and *_of course_* they are offended to be called stupid fools. That being said, don't stop what you're doing...because you are absolutely right.
Amazing video!
Samantha, I love your logic and reasoning. All of them!
Thank you for being a public voice about this topic. Need more people taking it seriously. More leaders in the food industry at least. Great video summary
I've been trying to reduce the amount of meat I eat, but damn I know I could be doing so much better. Thank you for the reminder!
Awesome video, as usual!
That’s awesome!! 💜💜💜
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!! This was a HUGE thing on my shelf that caused it to break. I was shamed by a bishop for becoming vegan!!
Your resources section is awesome
Hey, I think I might have seen you and Tanner @ SLC VegFest this weekend!
Next time say hi!
Me too Alissa!
Alissa Jones They’ve been the largest privately-owned, for-profit (for-prophet? lol) cattle ranchers of the US. For one year (‘97?) they were the largest in the world. So destructive and disrespectful
It was easy for me to give up meat. But I love my dairy. Definitely will work on that though.
Hannah James Same! I relate to this so much! I’ve been trying to go vegetarian at the very least but giving up dairy is way harder. Someday I’ll go vegan, I just don’t know how.
@@mjp2palmtree if you figure out how, please let me know
@@hannahjames6033 a great please to start is by youtubing 'dairy is scary'! it's a 5 min video on the whole industry and is absolutely heartbreaking, should set you off dairy for sure. there's also a video by the same girl about the egg industry. also, whilst vegan cheese isn't quite there yet, it's getting better and better each year, and products such as oat milk, miyoko's butter/cream cheese/etc. and non-dairy ice cream make it so easy to give up dairy products! it's a process so be patient with yourself, but you'll get there! it's so so worth it.
@@isabellegeers3918 I hate eggs, so that's not a difficulty. But I'll definitely check that video out. Thank you!
Thank You very much for your video. I got baptised yesterday and that is exactly I want to tell them.
How do you know, if your being prepped for excommunication? What are the symptoms? Thank you.
I'm on a carnivore diet. I feel better than I ever have. It may not be for everyone but it helps me with my bipolar and depression.
thank you for this! keep up the excellent content!
You hit on a huge issue about meds. The scripture and word of wisdom clearly point to natural.medicine and most church leaders have ignored it and some have even opposed it. This is reason enough to challenge or leave them .
Hello fellow vegans!!!! 💚🌻🙌🥦
Bothell Guy ravening wolf in sheep’s clothing you are.
I brought this up in seminary just now and my (overweight) teacher just stumbled over her words trying to explain how meat isn’t addictive
Classic!
Sam, what are your thoughts on lab grown meat? Assuming it can be developed using green production methods (low and/or no green house gas production), would you look down upon / be unsupportive of the consumption of lab grown meat?
I love it!
Haha, I knew exactly what you were going to talk about when I saw the title.
Great points here. I need to re-evaluate.
(Because they’re getting better all the time!)
I think you have to commit to what you think is right and not fall into the despair that can come from “but I’m only one person!” thinking.
The Blue Zones is one of my favorite books, and Earthlings is the most disturbing motion picture I've ever seen.

I am trying to reduce meat because of ethical and environmental reasons. It's hard because my spouse is not on board at all and very stubborn. Most of the meals that I eat on my own are vegetarian.

Meat factories and climate change pushed me to eliminate meat a decade ago. Thanks so much for bringing up this topic!
Never been a big meat eater. Never understood the obsession some people have with steak. CHEESE would be the hardest thing for me to give up. :-(
Just do your best! No shame necessary :)
My sister is vegan and I'm keto. She does shower a bit of possibly deserved guilt on me about the environmental impact of meat.
You have been far too generous and kind to them. I suppose being kind will hell them, but we need to expose them deeply.
I am a meatgoatfarmer and I agree with you.
Eat as litle meat as possible. Eat meat grown by natural grazing in areas not suitable for farming vegetables,
like mountain areas.
Reducing is awesome!!!! 🥳
Zelph On the Shelf- thanks for your reply. I appreciate the civil discourse. Still, though, could you cite one of these large studies you speak of?

Anyone else think it’s ironic the LDS church has “Stakes” and “Stake Centers?” Talk about subliminal messaging lol
The Mormon Church owns some of the largest Cattle farms in the USA that is why !
Do you think switching most livestock to open pastures instead of factory farms would help curtail the environmental problems? It would certainly help alleviate the animal suffering.
It doesn’t change the sustainability aspect but it does help animal suffering! Methane emissions don’t change, it takes more land etc.
I think we still need cows to help with the climate change. foodrevolution.org/blog/regenerative-agriculture/
Wow! Sam you're a great speaker. You come across so peacefully and clearly. Thank you and thumbs up!! Such a good point to bring up that they do not even follow their own doctrine once again. 💖
I went vegan this year in april.

Yikes! Good job being vegetarian though and encouraging your family to consume less animals! 🥳
I first got the vegan kool-aid from the Vegan Atheist channel. I love that skepticism seems to lead some to plant-based diets.
That's my biggest motivation for being vegan.
I agree there are things in the word of wisdom that are don't make sense. But the points you bring out in this video do. Thank you Samantha.
Vegan is a great idea, but it pales in comparison to other factors that are hurting our environment.
I wouldn’t say it “pales”. There are certainly other significant factors, yes, but how the world eats and uses land is huge, as the new UN report highlighted.
Picking something from the word of wisdom you like and saying “he got one right!” is the sort of selective hearing religious people have.
I love Earthling Ed!!!!
That research observed negative effects at temperatures far higher than most cultures drink tea or coffee.
Also yay on not eating meat! :)
@@ZelphOntheShelf Thanks for the info.
You definitely have to be educated on nutrition, yes. Children can thrive on a vegan diet but there needs to be proper awareness in the parents!
These days you can even buy vegan meals and meat substitutes which have added protein. Super useful!
The problem is over population.
Yes, that is a problem. But we have enough resources to feed the world. Just bad food production systems.
Minerals have been mined out of the ground from over farming the land.
