Being 61 years old and a fan of hip-hop/rap, I agree 💯that battles are the foundation and a huge part of the genre. In my eyes, the problem these days is that unlike early battles, where there was back and forth, afterward, there was usually a respect for each other. The beef was over. Now, beefs are aimed at ending someone's career...
NF hasn't been independent in a while bro. He has had help from labels for a long time. Also, Tom sells most of his music on physical albums, only about 25% of his total catalog is political. Most people don't seek out his non-political songs. I can name a bunch of other songs like this one.
Tom said he wouldn't do diss tracks after he ruined Mac Lethal's life. The reason why is Mac lethal didnt only lose his career, but he lost his family. He got divorced and he has a little girl. So who was the one that suffered the most? A little girl who doesn't understand why mommy left daddy and now has to split time between the two. She didn't ask for for it.
And yes you can say Mac Lethal being a cheating, drug using, piece of shit is to blame, but Tom exposed it. That family would still be together. It might jot be what's best for the wife, but its well established that kids who have both parents in the house have a better happier, healthier life. So Tom feels some responsibility, which shows maturity, a sense of right vs wrong and an ability to see the affects ripple beyond the other rapper.
Anyone who can't understand this (not aimed at you) either has no critical thinking skills or has no soul.
As far as what you said about his content, you are mixing all the other political rappers and Tom. He has mentioned Biden in one song. He doesn't ever say vote for Trump or Biden sucks. You are not listening to what he actually says.

My wife and I are differently politically, like different movies, music, hobbies, etc. Our differences make us a stronger couple than people who agree on anything. All those people you say are independent don't make their own beats, write all their own songs and keeping it all in house with family and friends! That's independent! I totally respect your honesty. With that said, I kind of disagree with some of your criticism. I am a hip-hop head from the 80s and 90s, and I, too, listen to all different genres and sub-genres of hip-hop. I have certain albums like Illlmatic that i've listened to probably five hundred times, and i'm not at all tired of the juice. Also, I find Tom's political music refreshing. It's very rare these days to find an artist who actually raps about the things they care about. If you are a true hip-hop head and don't find most of modern hip-hop garbage, then I would question your roots. Furthermore, Tom did not say that he wasn't gonna ever dis at any level. Tom said he wasn't going to do disses and/or battles. Now I understand that hip-hop is a competition, and I find it's kind of impressive that Tom's way of battling that is with the tracks and the numbers it's hard to argue with his numbers. So he may not come at your throat, but he'll make you look stupid when people compare the numbers. The last thing I want to say is you're right. Other independent artists have gotten Billboard plaques. How many independent artists can you tell me have got multiple plaques from Billboard without any help. Not a studio producing the videos, not purchasing other people's beats, not depending on any outside source at all at any level? My biggest argument in favor of Tom being on top of the independent game is that I don't know of any artists out there as independent as Tom. He's not the greatest hip-hop artist out there,,he's not even in my top ten overall. But there is an argument to be made for him to be #1 in independent hip hop?

I understand better than most about fanbases coming at you for dumb shit, but making fun of them that way was what kept me from subscribing. Also, Chance the Rapper is awesome, but he is still wrapped in the industry, had a two week exclusive deal with Apple Music for Coloring Book and he was given money for advertising, and Tom is definitely outselling most artists in physical albums. All Tom is really asking is for people to back the hell off and let him make the music he wants to make, and the respect what he's been able to do 100% independently with no outside help or deals.

I love how people say someone has to do something because to me that is saying that people must fit in a mold. Beefing publicly as a rapper is not analogous to needing to throw punches because you're a boxer. As a former boxer, I can say it's more comparable to being a hockey player. Chance the Rapper and NF are not independent artists. They both have publishing deals, distribution deals, work with industry producers, etc. They claimed their independent because they're not signed to a label, but if you had the backing and help of every other aspect of the industry you are not independent. We're talking 100% independent artists.
BTW, Tech N9ne and Joyner Lucas are also not independent artists. You have to look Beyond just the record label.

It's not that he doesn't want to diss or respond to Upchurch, he's not saying names... for one you had four or five other artists besides Upchurch all putting out diss tracks, some of them three, right after Upchurch did. Is he supposed to put out five different diss tracks on five different people, all of them are smaller than him? It doesn't even make sense. As soon as he says names what does he do?
When it comes to Upchurch, why did he put out the diss track? Because 2 weeks later he put out his album. So he did it and hopes to sell more albums. If Tom responds to Upchurch then he helps Upchurch sell. So why would he help him? By not saying his name it's actually the best thing he could do.

Big Tom fan for years. I have all his CDs. I can tell you the majority of his songs are actually not political! You just have to buy the CDs. For singles, he use to lean toward the controversial stuff for the clicks (got him noticed!$) but it has been repetitive, more in the past. I actually lean his way politically, but even I prefer THIS side of Tom, the black-eyed Tom... Guarantee you if you bought his CDs you'd rock with about 80-90% of his tracks.
