A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SYSTEMS ANALYST

- What does a day in the life of a system analyst look like? I am often asked what a systems analyst does. An I.T. Systems Analyst plays an important role within the information technology department. Often the system analyst is involved in projects to identify and rollout new technology solutions - crossing the boundary to work with other departments and be the main point of contact between the departments.
Systems analysts analyze how well software, hardware and the wider IT system fit the business needs of their employer or of a client (if they are working in a consultant role). The system analyst writes requirements and specifications for new systems and may also help implement them and monitor their effectiveness. The systems analyst may also maintain and administer the new system once it goes into production.
Computer systems analysts help companies use computer technology more efficiently. They incorporate new technology into current systems after doing cost-benefit analyses to determine whether it is financially sound and will serve the entity well.
This seems the most accurate description I've seen, without doing a deeper dive. I started my role as a System Analyst maintaining automation scripts to making backup servers, to adding webpage features and doing db maintenance. I know other System Analysts with completely different jobs, the title is pretty broad.
Could a systems analyst switch to the networking side with a net+ cert?
Net+ is not a bad step in direction, but it depends really on your situation. Other certifications like CCNA may be better for where you are in your career. You could also try to switch internally where you work. Having that internal domain (company) knowledge carries a good amount of value and they may be willing to train you on the job if you have some knowledge built up.
Thank you sir, what is the difference between system analyst and system consultant ?!
It depends. A consultant is more an external resource that gets pulled in to help. Sometimes as advisers and planners and sometimes to do the actual work. An analyst is an employee tasked with a certain role. Both may be doing the same type of work, but again - it depends.
@@ITCareerGuide Very helpful. Thank you sir
I landed my first Systems Analyst position after some years experience as a Back-end Developer. I'm honestly excited for what this role entails. Thank you for providing clarity.
How are you liking it so far? I'm a backend-developer and I'm interested in switching to a system analyst position. Will l still be able to code? What do you miss from your old role and what you prefer in the new one?
Update?
check in big dawg, how was it
I’ve been a system analyst for over 10 years, and I’ve always struggled to describe what it is that I do. My answer now is “I get asked to go make IT stuff without being told how, and it’s up to me to figure it out.”
This video does a much better job explaining the role than I do. It’s rarely boring, sometimes extremely exciting (for better or worse), and always interesting. If you’re someone who is technical, but also have people skills, this is a really good niche to find a career in.
Hey! bit of a reach to ask for advice here but i graduated this june with a bachelor's in Information Systems and i feel lost-- it seems to me like every IS job requires skills in different softwares so every individual job opening has different expectations. I guess im saying im lost. Where should I start? My curriculum covered tableau, sql, excel, arcgis, and more, but they didnt go far enough in depth for me to now be an expert in any of them. im afraid ill never find a job.
What are extra certification courses we can do to get deep into system analyst and it can also help us to get the first job?

Great guide! I'm an Enterprise Systems Analyst, and I love it so far. Sometimes, it's slow. I also handle incident management. Automation is a big part of my role and ChatGPT professional is going to be huge for us.
AI in general will be a huge change to the industry.
How long is the process to become a system analyst?
Would you mind giving a guide on material and resources for one to use if the want to transition into systems analysis
Which enterprise do you work..? Please can you tell me role and responsibilities of rice enterprise system analyst with brief.....
Yup..we do a lot.
Perfect mix between a product manager, business analyst and implementer. Lots of hats under a single title.
Must love learning and problem solving to really succeed
This is a strange field. A lot of systems analyst job postings I've looked for has duties that are pretty much just progamming jobs and has none of the design, problem solving, or data gathering duties you mentioned. Employers are confused when hiring for this role. Not sure why they don't just hire for programmers and developers. I studied Computer Information Systems and studied systems analysis and design but had very minimal programming so I could never get hired as a systems analyst if the job requires in depth knowledge of programming.
You can teach yourself programming.
@@emilyau8023 That's not the point. It's frustrating that schools don't recognize the change in the roles and duties of this field and don't update the expectations. If they updated the requirements and provided the proper education and tools, graduates in this field would be more successful. In addition, if people knew they were weak in programmming and disliked it, they wouldn't waste their time with this field if they knew in advance it would require it.
So weird. So I should be finishing up my MBA in data analytics and project/product management. I tried applying for BA role at my organization but was denied due to no experience I'm currently in sales but have no experience. Through my development plan and networking one of directors reached out to me about business systems analyst role although closed she was looking for an additional candidate. I don't want to be to technical and have very minimal programming skills. Only R for the most part but she insisted it won't be technical. Looks like a lot of companies have their own description of what this role is. I definitely agree with you
I think we both must've studied together lol. I finished back in 2020, took the classes, and it has been HARD to find a job. I just took this MIS degree as an IT degree. I got a job as an IT analyst last year, but at this point out of desperation in inclined to work in help desk and am studying a certification for it. But I'm like wtf though, like my coworker was like David, what did you actually study? I told him ERP systems and implementation, design, ETC. Like mostly business courses. I know people who went to do their masters in data analysis, but you see im 28 now and im still trying to make sense out of this degree. Like i googled to death how to get a systems analyst role, you need like 5 years of experience. But now! I had an aha moment, like well what should I study to compensate for this experience and land a role. Systems, business analyst (consultant) all these roles are vague as hell! Like I'm so confused. I went to career advising and they're just as fucking puzzled and can't help me get a job. LMFAO.
Be a program manager
imma systems analyst i do nothing like this lol. i do whatever is needed. connect printers, imaging, access whatever lol.
Get out of there. They're not properly training you.
Hahahahaha. Been there.
Would Ai threaten this industry like ChatGpt as such??
This is my current Enterprise role, working with Microsoft/HP vendor. Is a really fun role, i get to received affected devices and analyst the problem and find solutions that can be implemented across all devices. In my opinion is a role that you need to be okay by alone while researching, because thats most of the time.

Great video! Honestly had an epiphany after watching this. Realised I want to be a systems analyst
Best of luck! :-) Let me know how I can help (video topics etc.)
How hard is it to become one first year out of college?
An efficient SysAnalyst?
Not likely, SAs need to understand the business as well as technology implemented in the business's workplace. That takes a lot of time, 1+ year if not more.
thank you sir. Can't automate creativity!
Do you have a video about EHR Associate analyst- ambulatory Physicians offices? I can't find any information on this position. Can you tell me a little about this position
I do not have a specific video for that role, take a look at this video of mine: ua-cam.com/video/T3-fODo8F_w/v-deo.html
I hope it covers some of what you need.
Very clear understanding and explaining. Thank you so much!
Do you hate sleep and wish there was an excruciating way of forcing baldness on yourself?
If so, become a SysAnalyst today!

🤣
This is dependent on the company not the job.
Great job in articulating roles and responsibilities of Systems Analyst !!
What learning path should one take if we want to become a systems analyst? Say you're starting from scratch, with zero knowledge or experience, or trying to transition from another field.
I’m a systems analyst , I studied biology , left that career , taught my self JS, got a software engineer job entry level , and then finally systems analyst where I’m at now . Local manufacturing company . Try local “big” companies first .
What is their relationship between management, the programmers, project manager? Is it mainly just telling them what to do?
It depends. It is different during a project compared to a business as usual situation. You as the analyst want to provide value. The more value you provide, the more involvement you will see. Your opinion and findings matter. But in most situations you are being asked to do certain things and then work away on these requests.
Is Systems Analyst and IT Analyst the same role?
One could say so. Compare job descriptions for both and you can easily see the difference (or no difference).
Lov and respect from India
Will it be preferable for me to take courses to earn certifications in order to boost my chances on landing a job once I’m out of college. I’m well aware it’s all about experience since I know that I want to work in it whether I could work as a software analyst or software developer 👩🏽💻
Can software tester become system analyst?
I would think so. You need to position yourself appropriately. Look for job ads where system analysts are wanted. Then compare your skill set and potentially fill any gaps. If you are applying internally, talk to the hiring manager. If there is no job internally open at the moment, still talk to the hiring manager and let her know that you are looking to slightly adjust your career and share your goals. Consider taking the Google / Coursera Data Analytics certification course to improve your skill set. Here is my referral link for you: bit.ly/3xseb4K (PS: I would earn a small commission if you decide to sign up through my link. There is no extra cost for you and it helps to support my channel. Thank you.)
What is better Data Science or System Design and Analysis? Also why?
That's a loaded question. What specifically are you looking at with system design?
quick question. How important is coding being a system analyst. ngl I hate coding, not interested in learning anything hard.maybe python or linux basics...
In most cases it plays a role - especially when it comes to use automation for certain tasks and data crunching. You may have to embrace it if that is the job you want.
Is it hard to become a system analyst
Not really in my opinion, but it matters what your starting point is.
This seems so overwhelming. Please can you upload a step by step guide of what to do to be successful with a new project or upgrade suggestion
Can you provide a bit more input of what you are looking for?
Are there any certifications or things I need to learn before becoming a system analyst?
Always great content sir! Thank you!!
What about drawing ERD , UML diagrams ? these activities are not part of system analyst day ?
Excellent question!!!
Just to add to what you accurately said, it depends on the size of organisation you are in. Generally the bigger the organisation, the more handsoffish you will be, from a technical point of view. If you came from a programming background, you will probably lean more backwards to your developing days, as opposed to someone who comes from "the business" where they may have started on the shop floor/warehouse.planning or maybe finance as an accountant. Being able to interact with users is the key though, and that provides variety rather than being handed a spec as a programmer.
Does system analyst required coding?
I am currently in college for CIS degree and i must say, the field seems pretty boring.
This can be true, but does not have to be. There is actually so much variety possible. Can you provide info? Happy to provide more feedback.
I graduated recently with a CIS degree. I was in IT before that as well, but from my experience there are plenty of opportunities for you to work in IT that you can find enjoyable. Explore different options and see what kind of role would suit you best!
Christoff... I do not under any circumstances want to analyse your system...
and why is that?

You are welcome. Thank you for watching my video.
I'm currently studying CCNA & CCNP. Is it or how likely can I switch to System Analyst and can you help me out the next step to take please ?
all the words he uses are so formal, makes I can't concentrate on what he said
Thank you it helps a lot!
You're welcome!
Very very good detailed description of this. Thank you so much.

Take a look at these 2 on Amazon. There are more on Amazon, but it is not a one size fits all. PS: These are partnerlinks and I would earn a small commission from Amazon at no extra cost for you. Helps me to keep the channel going. Thank you.

Thank you sir direct and to the point.
You're welcome. Let me know what other topics are of interest for you - happy to help where I can.
Does a systems analyst understand programming languages
I would say it depends. It is most likely not a primary skill set. Do you have anything specific in mind?
@@ITCareerGuide Do you mean that they are secondary skills If they are secondary skills, does he need them in his work Thank you for answering
Is systems analysts the same as implementation and product support?
It can be, but might not. Job titles are all over the place these days. Some people thrive on having a fancy title, some thrive based on pay, and others just want to deliver and see results. You have to read the job description and compare.
Do systems analysts code?
Quite possible, but it depends. You are probably not coding in a way a software engineer would code. But if you frequently run data analysis or have the need for automation --- that is where coding knowledge would come into play. There are more use cases, but I think this should give you an idea.
but those eyebrows...
Will they mess up your career? Bad dreams? Focus on what matters if you want to be successful. Eyebrows are not part of that.
