*Producer Royalties* or *Point's* on the Album needs to be clarified as it doesn't have anything to do with beats. In the Music Industry by professionals, Points are a percentage of record royalties that comes out of the Artist *Recording Agreement* from the exploitation of the *Masters* or *Records* that's negoicated between the *Artist* and the *Record Producer* for producing the *Master Recording* of the entire finished record NOT for the acutal beat that you composed for an Artist. Not all Record Producer's Co-Writes the music as you don't even have to make a beat have anything to do with Co-Writing any of the music and still be enittled to Producer Royalties as the director that oversees the creation and vision of the record like *Quincy Jones* or *P-Diddy.* Normally when a Record Producer that collaborates and works directly with the artist in the studio, they charge an upfront recoupable advance for the Master's of the finished record. Typically one half the money is paid from starting The recording and production and The other half upon completion of the Masters. Some times it's paid out of the approved Recording budget and some times not. The Producer would then neogicate his or her points let's say 3% of the *(Suggested Retail Listing Price).* How ever the SRLP model system is outdated and the industry has moved to the Artist *Net receipts* model. So instead of 3% of SRLP, it's 20% of Artist Net receipts. Normally the Producer would not receive any back end record royalties from the Artist until the Artist and Record Company has recouped all recording cost from the recording budget and all advances paid to the Producer have been recouped from record sales. If the Producer Co-wrote the music such as the beat, then they get thier back end Publishing royalties as the Co-Writer of the Composition. If you are just licensing beats, then it's simply a one time license fee plus back end publishing if Artist distributed the finished record. I'm a *Producer/Songwriter* that's pretty savvy on this as I hope this clears things up.
    *PRODUCER=DIRECTOR*
*SONGWRITER=BEAT MAKER (COMPOSER OF MUSIC)/LYRICIST (WRITER OF LYRICS)*

As a producer, I always negotiate not to wait til the artist has recouped. I get paid on record 1. That's their deal, not mine with the record company. It may or may not work. If they want it bad enough it shouldn't be a problem.

So let's say you sell a beat (lease rights) to an artist on *YOUR OWN WEBSITE* , and the song blows up, how exactly do you get your mechanical royalties aside from simply depending on the artist to hit you up? Is there an organisation that can do that? I've read so much and watched so many videos, but none of them address this whatsoever.

Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm an aspiring producer. I'm finally ready to sell some beats and I'm planning on utilizing Beatstars platform to start. I have some questions. What happens if I sell the minimum license to a rapper on Beatstars and the song blows up. How can I ensure that I'll get compensated? I believe the minimum MP3 license is royalty free?
Also, Postman, could you listen to some of my beats and critique them?

That's where things get hazy. Producers can charge whatever royalties and fees they want and you can either accept or decline the terms but always have contracts that state the terms of the agreement. Even with friends. Also, be objective. If he makes HQ beats and has a good catalog and tons of placements then he is worth more than someone who is just learning how to be a producer or audio engineer.
Also, you can make offers until you both strike a deal. Just don't make insulting offers. This business is all about relationships.
I would just encourage you to study up on how other Producer at your Producers level are doing things and make negotiations that way.
Things can get complicated when you start talking writer shares, mechanical royalties, record royalties and all that so the best thing you can do is just obsessively research the subject so when it comes up your not lost in the conversation.
Hope that helps. Sorry I can't really provide a concrete answer. It's one of those things where there is a lot of gray area.
