    Queen was the first band that ive listen to as a young boy. Years later ive noticed that they set the bar for me so high for other music. I thought that this kind of quality is usual but it clearly isnt in the music industry. So the point i am trying to make is that i was spoiled with good music from the beginnig.

      I can absolutely understand that!
      From age nine until about 20 I was in a bubble of Queen and solo/Cross because nothing else made me feel the same way. Nothing came close to Queen.
      Then I was introduced to Jeff Buckley just a couple of years after his death and my world was opened. His (only pre-departure) album is, I feel, on the same shelf of magnificent as (almost) any Queen album. I actually started playing guitar because of Jeff... Admittedly I couldn't use Queen as such an influence because how could I ever hope to emulate Brian effing May? The God.
      Jeff pretty much showed me you CAN make some of the greatest music even without those four ultra talented guys from Queen and without that awesomely amazing guitar tone and ability!
      Thanks to Jeff I can happily sing Queen while busking, on a nylon string guitar, unamplified so no real solos, and bloody enjoy myself immensely without feeling I am doing Queen an injustice!

    Think the reason I find Queen so fascinating is that their songs are about such diverse things. I mean how many groups have a song about a medieval painting? And to have it immediately follow a hard rock song like Ogre Battle. Brian said that their fans in the early days were very loyal and did not require them to fit into a box. Liked your comment about the beginnings of a song like BoRap. Love that you react to some of the more obscure songs. Thanks

    So phenomenal! This was from their second album, called Queen II. Right from the get go, they were destined for epic greatness! Pure genius! Ogre Battle Live at the odeon '75 is fantastic. For the studio Fairy feller's Masterstroke, Freddie played a harpsichord which was a keyboard instrument that was the precursor, or distant relative to the piano that was played from the 16th century through to the first half of the 18th century. He played a grand piano for the live rendition at the rainbow. I highly recommend "My Fairy King" from their first album.

    In the beginning of their career Freddie was very much into telling fantasy stories in his songs. Amazing what he could come up with, not only lyrically but also musically in his compositions. Sometimes he already tinkered with some songs before Queen was formed and completed them with the band.Bohemeian Rhapsody as you mentioned was one of them, too. Another song he created was " Seven Seas Of Rhye" a fantasy tale he used to create for his younger sister. Amazing song and an absolutely must.

    I just found you and this reaction is two years ago, but I really appreciate the way you deal with Queen. I was in middle school when I bought Queen’s first album in I think 1973. I purchased every album they did on or around the day it came out and have seen them live. While I love it all, laying on the floor just me, the liner notes (and a dictionary ) listening to the black side of Queen II changed me. I certainly grew way the hell up musically, I also learned about excellence.

  • @ben1ben
    @ben1ben 4 роки тому +12

    Yes this was before Sheer Heart Attack. _Queen_ was their first Album and _Queen II_ their Second. This is just their second album. (Bohemian Rhapsody was on ''A Night at the Opera'' which was in 1975 and the Queen II album was in 1973). 2:35, the beginning of Ogre Battle was THE ENDING Of the song but in reverse :D 2:51 here you can hear the reverse easily transitioning to the normal recording. Here the ending of the song again so you notice how the ending of the song was also the beginning of the song but reversed, 8:40. Also the gong in the ending of the song gives you an amazing boost if you know what I mean. Like it really pumps me up. 5:57, ok so then as I said before. Queen had done that transition thing many times. I don't know what else people requested so that I can tell you which ones have transitions and which don't. But I can tell you a famous one, if someone wants to request the studio version of White Queen (which btw *isn't* actually better than the live version. live it was perfect.) But yea these are the 3 songs that transition together: _Queen - Procession / Father To Son / White Queen (As It Began)._ I mention some together hanging songs that you already reacted too WITHOUT the transition so you know what songs you have already reacted to without a transition. ''The March Of The Black Queen'' had a Transition to ''Funny How Love Is''. Then there is ''The Prophets Song'' and ''Love of my Life''. Actually that's about it of the songs you already know 😂 You already reacted to love of my life BUT The live version and not studio version, I just wanted to mention that. So yea I don't want to point out what songs Queen had done transitions to because I would sit here for hours writing all that down. But I mention one more because of people who requested ''Tenement Funster'' by Roger maybe, Because that also has a transition it is _Queen - Tenement Funster / Flick Of The Wrist / Lily Of The Valley._ So here the video titles if you are interested. ''Queen - Procession / Father To Son / White Queen (As It Began) (2011 Remaster + Lyrics)''. ''Queen - Tenement Funster / Flick Of The Wrist / Lily Of The Valley (Remaster + Lyrics)
    ''. All the videos are by the channel named Cj ROCKS. He perfectly puts the transitions together just as they were in the original Queen Albums. Ok now I go on with the facts of the Video. So at 7:27, listen to the Right Ear, on the right side you can hear Freddie Mercury Screaming the note C6. 7:36 on the Left side (in your headphones) you can hear a Scream which was the note A5 WHICH ACTUALLY Wasn't by Roger but it was Screamed by Freddie. If it was Roger prove me wrong. The only way I can actually prove that it was Freddie and not Rog is because it was in a Vocal Range Video which was about FREDDIE and not Roger. No one ever even mentioned that this part was screamed by Rog. Even in ''see what a fool I've been'' you can hear Freddie screaming like that. It does sound like Roger tho in here HAHAH im confused. Feel free to prove me wrong! 8:10 Yea you can use the term Scream for it, BUT In the Lap Of The Gods it wasn't a Scream it actually is called a ''high note'' but it is called *Falsetto* you can refer to this part at 7:36 as a High scream or falsetto scream. But in the lap of the gods you could also say Roger screamed there but it is called Falsetto. So yea you can say screaming but the singer's term for it would be normally Falsetto. 8:58 here, you can refer to it as a Scream but actually what Roger is doing here is his A5 falsetto with Freddie I believe doing an G5 which is one note lower to harmonize together with Roger. (and then that epic gong wow). Yea and then with the Gong it transitions to The Fairy Fellers Master-Stroke. So yea Freddie loved the ''The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke'' Painting. He would often go to an Museum in England where the painting was in. When he was near the museum Freddie would ALWAYS go there. You can see the Painting in the Video there. 9:12 basically the whole song through the Painting is in the Video. The Lyrics of the Song is Freddie basically describing the Picture and every detail. I love how a masterpiece got created out of another masterpiece if you know what I'm saying 😂 10:25 now You still hear Freddie singing, but he sings in a higher way. I call that the Helium Voice of Freddie. I MEAN PLEASE Think of the Bearded *Manly* good looking Freddie that he was in Wembley 1986, and at the same time think of him singing like that 😂😂 I mean really, he was so talented he could change his Voice so much I love it. 10:44 Listen to the Right Ear and you can hear an Nice Falsetto by Roger (it was The Note A5, I need to mention that A5 is the most common Falsetto Roger would always do, and it sounds Great every time and entirely different even if it was the same) Right after that at 10:46 you can hear in the Left ear a different kind of high note that still was by Roger, this time he doesn't go AAAAAAAAAAAAA but he goes, La laaa, laa laaa, la la la la lalalaaaaaah. Weird example but it's true. 10:58 you can hear Roger on the Right side again with his high notes and in 11:04 it switches to the left side where Freddie would do it now. And it goes on and on and yea. At the same time there you can hear an Harpsichord in the background. 12:04 yes I believe that also was an Harpsichord. 12:29 On the Right side AGAIN you can hear Roger doing a Falsetto, but this time he says something. It is hard singing words while doing a Falsetto but even that Roger could do. Roger just said ''friend'' but in the note A5. 12:46 here you can hear the fantastic instrumental transition to the next song Nevermore. 13:40 you can hear the word Nevermore going from Left to right and so on. 13:49 Angelic Harmonization by Roger and Freddie. Summing up those 3 songs that hang together just needs one word and it's *Perfect.* I mean what do you want more after that :D They knew what they were doing and in the end it came out perfectly :D just a reminder, yes this was before Bohemian Rhapsody. 15:21 Yesn't. Well I do mostly listen to Queen but I can listen to other stuff too. I just prefer Queen if you know what I'm saying. I mostly listen to Michael Jackson and Queen but I do listen to EDM, Rap and all that kind of stuff too. Hahahaa yes I wasted all my time to give you great information about just these 3 songs 😂 Imagine me accidentally miss clicking on ''cancel'' instead of posting the comment now 😂
    I'm editing this comment now to point out something big that is really hard to notice. 8:30 The remaster of this song is so detailed that if you listen closely you can hear Brian’s sixpence scraping against the strings, on the left side in the headphones. You can even hear that trough the whole song but I just chose that part as an example

    I bought this album the day it was released, loved it then and love it still. On 'Ogre Battle' yes, it is indeed Roger supplying that ethereal screeching. 'The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke' is literally Freddie describing the painting by Victorian artist Richard Dadd who, incidentally died in Broadmoor Hospital.

    It’s like being stuck with your favorite song even tho there are still a lot of song in the catalogue. And that’s what’s also happening to me right now, stuck w/ my favorite Queen songs but as a new fan I still have a lot to discover from them. Well I guess it’s just me not wanting to end my Queen journey. 😅 Now let me just talk about Freddie’s voice (my realizations after seeng this video). What separates him from other good singers is that he is never afraid of changing his tones and he even sounds like a girl sometimes. I think he is the only good singer I know that shows abundant distinction of voices in just one song or even in every song. He sings it differently in every record. He is not only a good singer but also a good story teller. I’ve heard a lot of singers that are good story tellers (especially ballad singers) but Freddie is just way beyond that level (I guess you could sometimes say he is over the top but in a good way). And definitely he chose the right band for him to explore his creativity.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 роки тому +11

      Yes! You are 100% correct, Freddie could really change his voice a lot.. He was great at telling the story of the song. I have never seen another singer who uses as much expression while singing as Freddie, and I do like to study different singers. That is something Montserrat Caballe also praised about him, she said he was able to find the right colour and nuance for every word. He sang with great expression.

    • @MsAyu15
      @MsAyu15 4 роки тому +3

      **Zenobia** Yes that’s it, “singing with great expression “. What I consider a good storyteller in singing is someone who knows how to get his or her message across in his singing, to the point that they evoke emotions according to how the song was written. But I hardly hear any singer who nonchalantly change their voice when expressing the song. Maybe they don’t do it because it’s not the voice that their audience are familiar with or their not confident enough and are afraid of sounding weird. However what Freddie is doing is still considered outside the norm. But Freddie is just too good in doing it that it sounded seamless when you hear his songs and ended up enjoying listening to it. I think that’s one good point for studio albums compared to live performances because there is just a lot of variety. Since when it comes to live performances I seldom hear him sing in a soft way, especially in the 80s. But I understand why he does that and I also prefer it that way since I agree that Live concerts should have a different vibe. And I do believe that’s what makes them one of the best live bands ever.

    Amazing reaction! Many people believe that this was the best Queen album. This album didn't sell that much copies, but it was a very influential album. Loads of metal bands list this album as one their favorite albums or as a big inspiration. There is so much experimentation and different types of sounds. Of course the whole sequence is very Freddie. Actually this 70's rock song or music from Queen have aged extremely well, because they did not use synthesizers, that tends to date other progressive rock from this era. Ogre Battle is an early power metal song before the genre really existed, and before the band Rainbow started off the power metal trend. (In fact Richie Blackmore (guitarist), from Rainbow and earlier from Deep Purple actually loved Freddie's voice). Freddie wrote Ogre Battle on the guitar, so that tells you he was a better guitar player then people realize.
    The screams are a battle cry between the Ogres. It was Freddie and Roger. Freddie also had a very high falsetto, Freddie could do whistle notes, so he has sung high notes then Roger.
    If you want to see Freddie's falsetto in action live, check out Impromptu live at Wembley 1986 ua-cam.com/video/r2Byk3ybyv4/v-deo.html, I think you might be surprised.
    Another power metal song with fantasy lyrics from the first Queen album is The Great King Rat, a really awesome underrated song which no one ever really checks out. The live version is fantastic The Great King Rat live at the Rainbow ua-cam.com/video/nNDOazfRg08/v-deo.html.
    The Fairy Feller Master-stroke is of course a very interesting song. The song features Freddie playing a harpsichord. If you listen closely the song actually has a polka in it! How many people would add a polka to a rock song? Freddie wrote the song about a painting he loved by Richard Dadd. The artist did this whole painting depicting when a nut is cracked open according to fairy tale lore. Freddie was basically just describing directly what was happening in the painting. The artist took 8 years to complete the painting after being committed to a psychiatric ward, for killing his father. Nevermore more is just a lovely short song. Dee Snider from Twisted Sister said you needed and old English dictionary to understand these Queen songs, but once you do they are amazing.
    Queen has 3 other songs that goes together seamlessly which is also amazing, Tenement Funster (sung by Roger probably one of Roger's best songs)/ Flick Of The Wrist (another diss track which I think is better then Death On Two Legs)/ Lily Of The Valley - ua-cam.com/video/GWTwmeaw6CU/v-deo.html.

    Since you seem to enjoy Queen's earlier offerings, try these from their first album, "Queen" 1973: My Fairy King, and Great King Rat written by Freddie, and Son and Daughter by Brian. You will see that they were a fully formed band right from the beginning. After all, they didn't play any gigs for two years and just practiced while thy were finishing their degrees and looking for a record deal.

    I used to be able to sing along to every song on this album. It was the 5th Queen album I got, and I fell in love. One of my top 3 albums, and I always shoot back to a time before any of my mental health issues.
    Queen are so amazing in the way they play with sound, I think play is a perfect time for the sound of Fairy Fellers Masterstroke, how quick it is, how much Roger's voice is used in contrast to much lower vocals by Freddie. Honestly Queen are a hugely underrated band, cause no one listens to there absolute best songs, one of the few cases "the hits are popular for a reason" doesn't count.

    You are right, they often do back on backs on their albums and the concerts to. Keep up your good work I enjoy your discovery of queen. You had Now I'm here the other day. And yes the power at the Wembley gig was enormous. But when they did this song in the 70's they let the audience sing. You can hear that on the Live Killers album. I loved queen before, since Killer Queen was on dutch TV, and I was 6 years I guess. Couldn't understand a word, but the music entered so powerful. When I heard Live Killers on the recored the first time I knew it. There is no bigger, better, more versatile band than Queen.
    You should listen to Brian's Last Horizon live. It's instrumental but the panning and multi layer you hear that on stage.keep up the good work

    Great reaction and an excellent idea to listen to these 3 songs successively. Three beautifuls gems ! I remember so well first time I listened to The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, one of my Queen's favorite, all the more that being French so considering the delusional vocabulary employed by Freddie in this crazy track I was completely clueless but the music OMG !!! I think I had never heard anything like that before... Of course spent after that a lot of time both exploring the dictionary and scrutinazing the painting ;)
    I recommend three other wonderful possibilities to listen at several Queen songs consecutively :
    1) Album Queen II : Procession + Father to Son + White Queen (studio version very different from Live one you have already listened to weeks ago)
    2) A quite facetious one and the group deliberately choice => the end of Queen II album followed directly by first track of Sheer Heart Attack : Seven Seas of Rhye + Brighton Rock.
    3) Album Sheer Hear Attack : Tenement Funster + Flick of the Wrist + Lily Of The Valley

    Freddie did the Ogre's scream while Roger did the high vocal on chorus's ==so I am told. Also, I am happy the way you react. You can go thru a Queen journey, but also a journey of Queen's musical styles & Freddie's vocals. We know Freddie for his power thanks to the more "popular" songs & LiveAid/Wembly/Montreal, but this pure/sweetness of his actual varied range can get overlooked.

    I understand the feeling of only wanting to listen to Queen 😂 I discovered Queen when I was about 13, when my sister gave me an mp3 player that had Queens Greatest Hits album on it, and my mind was literally blown, first off, I've heard almost every single song before, but never heard of Queen and didn't know who they were by, and I then knew the name that made such songs, and I've also never heard such unique music, just simply mind-blowing. And that started my Queen addiction, I wanna say from that point until I was about 15 or 16, Queen was pretty much the only artist I listened to, because they had so many songs and they were all so different and blew my mind, and I was also into Progressive Rock a bit, so it also amazed me how such a big band like Queen managed to fit Prog Rock into popular music. But anyways, I listened to their albums all the way through, every B-side, unreleased records, bonus tracks, watched every interview I could find, documentaries etc. Etc. I was really into this band, and some albums took a bit to grow on me, and as I got a bit older, i started loving metal as well, and then having that knowledge and listening to Queen, you can hear the clear influences on artists today, and I never stopped listening to their albums, but The Miracle and Innuendo really grew on me, and now they are 2 of my favorite Queen albums, the production is A-class, top tier, the best in the business, just mind blowing, and they were even doing it back in 1973, and you can hear them evolve more and more through each album. Anyways, that's my story on my love you Queen, I got so addicted to their music that I thought "this sucks, why is this one of the first bands I've gotten really into, no one is ever going to make better music" and I got into that frame of mind, but I'm away from that now, but I still feel as though nobody can ever compare to the musicianship, talent, song-writing, and just raw emotion, they were the complete package and will forever remain my favorite band, but I dont let that sour my taste for other music because I still love everything and I've realized just how much music there really is and how unique it all is, such as Avenged Sevenfold, i fell in love with them for the same reasons as Queen, every album was different, their music was grandiose and perfectly produced and executed. Now i listen to everything from Dion and The Belmonts, to Eminem, to Pantera, I just have a true love for great musicianship. And I have found a new love for rap within the last year or two, because i realised just how insanely technical it can get, not only just the amazing different flows from people like Eminem, Tech N9ne and Kendrick, but to the insane thought and precision that goes into each word and line, the double, triple, and sometimes Quadruple entendres people create, it's just mind blowing. Anyways, I'm not sure why i got into my life story 😂 but I'm a true lover of all music just like you and I hold people who love all music genres in very high respect because there aren't a shit ton of people like that, given, that number is going up I'm starting to notice. Queen will always be my favorite artists and will always be a step above every other artist in my opinion, but I put that aside when i listen to other people so I can really enjoy all the other amazing masterpieces that different artists come out with. Keep up what you're doing man and show love to all genres, all genres deserve credit where credit's due, and if a song provokes any emotions, that's a sign of a great song, no matter what genre it may be. Also, I highly recommend The Fallen Priest by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. I feel that it doesnt get the respect it deserves, everyone says Barcelona and The Golden Boy are THE songs to listen to from their Barcelona album, and while those are great songs, i feel they don't show the true greatest of their collaborations, the rest of the album is just outstanding. And if you ever listen to Guide Me Home/How Can I Go On (which should be played 1 after another) i recommend the Alternate version on UA-cam, where it's just Freddies voice, he imitates Montserrats parts with his voice and he sings the song even better on the alternate version as well.

    Regarding yr comment that u now find yourself unconsciously comparing other music to Queen. .. It's happened, u have been godsmacked by the.sounds of Queen & are now making the inevitable comparisons of all other music to them... it comes to us all, u cannot help but compare every other music to Queen henceforth & forever... welcome to the world of this incredible band of musical genius, musicianship, experimentation, imagination, mastery of their instruments, their individual genius, their songwriting, their many different genres of songs, all glued together with Freddie's beautiful voice taking u on many different types of vocal mastery & outrageous paths. This Is what everyone else says happens to them & u just realized it too... & now u see how having heard a sampling od Queen music, u will from here on in, without realizing it some days, compare all music to theirs. I smiled when u said it, having heard so many other reaction videos critique them & say exactly that. Even the actors in the 2018 biopic movie Bohemian Rhapsody all announced this same phenomenon as they made the movie. Joe Mazello, who played John Deacon, said he'll be in his car listening to his prior fave music & just can't anymore...he has to put Queen on every day, it does this to most people other than the sad trolls who click the downward thumb icon. I appreciate yr pauses to point out a sound u heard from a particular band member's instrument that u liked, u make me hear John's base more clearly. And any high falsetto that isn't Freddie is Roger (as in BoRhap's "Gallileo" call outs)... yes, that's Roger.
    Once in awhile we get to hear Brian May's beautiful voice solo, but not as often as we should. Please do a reaction commentary on NO ONE BUT YOU, written by Brian & sung by Brian & Roger & u will be quite surprised at the powerful & beautiful voices they both let loose with. It's a tribute song to Freddie. I'll go get the link for u & come back & edit this in a few minutes... it will amaze u. Be right back....
    Sailor Suzie from Oregon
    Okay, here's the link, would so love u to hear how powerful Brian's solo vocal is... enjoy!

    Playing around with left and right sounds in stereo systems was done on many recordings. Hi Fi stereo off vinyl records was new technology in the home in the early 70s. And it was even more fun when good quality affordable headphones became available.
    And an album wasn't a "good" album unless it had good flow from song to song. There was no shuffle mode. You plonked the needle down at the beginning of a record, or popped a tape in, and listened to the whole side beginning to end. There was no skip button. A song that felt out of place was a major bummer. If it was a record, you had to get up, walk over, lift the lid, lift the needle, put it down in the groove between tracks, and then go back and get comfortable again. Tapes were worse. I don't miss vinyl records. But I miss the care in writing and producing an album that sometimes made it more than the sum of its songs

    fun fact: Freddie was an art-student and the "f.f. master stroke" is an amazing painting by richard dadd. you see the painting in the video (or if you go to the louvree in paris) ... he only describes the scene in the picture and as it was ment to interpretate it. it's an very good example who intelligent and clever the lyrics of freddie were ...
    there is a cover of this song from an italian art-student who is also in a queen-coverband who made an amazing video, displaying the references to the painting. i hope you don't mind to link the unknown video (guess, it can't be found on search) where he highlights every character of the paintin mentioned in the song ... and even made it kind of 3d ...
    but this is art to me and freddie would have been loved it...! once you saw this video, you know that the song is all about! without the picture, you might won't get it ... ua-cam.com/video/LY7-WNXGdIA/v-deo.html

    I love Queen but I’m not one of their biggest fans. I noticed, however, that no one recommended “Don’t stop me now” to you. Is that possible? Thought everybody loved Mr.Fahrenheit 🙃

    Mercury was inspired to write "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" by Richard Dadd's painting The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke at the Tate Gallery in London. The use of the word "quaere" in the twice-repeated line "What a quaere fellow" has no reference to Mercury's sexuality. "Nevermore" is a short ballad written by Mercury about the feelings after a heartbreak. Mercury wrote "Ogre Battle" on guitar (as confirmed by May in several interviews) in 1971 and it was one of the earliest songs in the Queen setlist despite not being recorded until the Queen II sessions. The band did not want to record it for their first album but rather waited until they could have more studio freedom to do it properly.
    The ogre-like screams in the middle are Mercury's, and the high harmonies at the end of the chorus hook are sung by Taylor. As the title suggests, it tells the story of a battle between ogres and features a May guitar solo and sound effects to simulate the sound of a battle. The beginning of the song is the end of the song in reverse including the final gong, which when played backward at the start of the song, creates the building wave sound. The song is one of Queen's heaviest works. The guitar riff along with Taylor's drumming gives it a very "thrash" sound. It was a longtime live favorite. The song was last played on the 1977 News Of The World North America Tour and was performed at every concert up until that tour.
    A different version of "Ogre Battle" exists, recorded in December 1973 for the BBC Radio 1 "Sound of the 70s" program. This version starts right away with its riff (without any long intro), does not have any effects that the version on "Queen II" has and sounds much less polished. The BBC version of "Ogre Battle" did originally have a long intro featuring a grand guitar build up; it was not used for this release, allegedly because the original tape was damaged.

      Awesome comment. I'm always surprised with the depth of knowledge Queen fans know. I've actually learned something and I'm sure others will too. Thank you for taking the time.
