  • Bonanza - Episode 69 - The Honor of Cochise - The Cartwrights must try to get help for Adam, seriously wounded by an Apache bullet, and find out why Cochise and his warriors have threatened to kill them all if they don't hand over an army captain taking refuge in their trail camp.
    The Honor of Cochise
    Director: Don McDougall
    Writer: Elliott Arnold
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 8 October 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Jeff Morrow guest-stars as legendary Apache chief Cochise, who despite his avowed peaceful stance has sworn vengeance against Cavalry captain Moss Johnson (DeForrest Kelley). While Johnson takes refuge at the Ponderosa, Ben Cartwright, surrounded by a batallion of Cochise's deadliest warriors, is determined to learn the true story behind the Apache leader's vendetta. Fueling the crisis is a seriously injured Adam, and Johnson's ever-increasing hysteria. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"What DeForest Kelley did to warrant the Apaches coming after him all the way to Nevada we'd call a war crime. during an alleged peace parley Kelley poisoned he food and drink and killed men, women, and children. Led by Cochise theyve chased him to the borders of the Ponderosa where Kelley seeks refuge with the Cartwrights before they find out what he's done.
This episode belongs to Lorne Greene as he seeks a truce so that a wounded Pernell Roberts cawn get aid. He promises to see that Kelley is brought to justice. Will Cochise believe him?
Jeff Morrow plays Cochise and he pretty much follows in the footsteps of Jeff Chandler as the stoic and wise warrior chief.
It's a good episode with kudos to Jeff Morrow." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"This episode aired early in October 1961, the 3rd episode of the 3rd season. The Cartwrights run into a soldier (DeForest Kelly) on the run from a band of Indians led by Cochise (Jeff Morrow).
A note: By the start of the 3rd season, the Cartwrights had settled into their customary uniforms they wore throughout the duration of the series. Look for Bing Russell as a cavalryman who tries to defeat Cochise. Very shortly after this episode he assumed the role of Deputy Clem, which he kept until the show concluded in 1973.
This episode is particularly outstanding due to the performance of DeForest Kelly. You can see the sweat, grime, dirt, fear, evil, confusion, & stubbornness of his character as he defends his actions. It's a performance that deserves repeat viewings. When he keeps repeating "But I was only following orders" you kinda feel a little sympathy for him.
Jeff Morrow, who made a lot of westerns in the 1950s, brings a quiet dignity & honor in his portrayal of Cochise. Even though he's not an Indian, his performance works.
Finally, this episode deals with history in that the U.S. Cavalry sometimes had to use any means necessary in their battles with the American Indians. This episode also makes the viewer think about what is wrong & right during war. I wholly recommend it." Written by jeremylr on IMDb.com

Good evening to everybody. I am a proud German (native) and greet you all children of God / Manitu. Once many years ago, I met a Cherokee doing service in the US Army while being stationed in the barracks in my hometown Darmstadt. It was a great honour for me to meet him as it is also a great honour to meet you all Indian natives here. I am very proud of and have deep respect to all of you ! May you all be blessed everytime and everywhere by our great Creator and Savior of Mankind !

I am of Indian dissent, and I know that we too were savage not only toward each other, sometimes being cannibalistic in our zeal for conquest, but also toward the whites. There were immoral and unethical engagements from all sides. We were fighting each other for hunting grounds long before the whites got to this continent. That's never taught in the white man's schools any longer. We have much lore describing our exploits and wars against other tribes, and they against us. Then, the white man became a common enemy that brought us together, but only in a small way. Those who call themselves muslim, they too war amongst themselves until they have a common enemy, then they too go back to attacking each other for dominance of their beliefs and values. This all is so old, and very tiring. There are those who don't want us all to live in harmony. The forces in politics that continue driving wedges of division amongst us all will not countenance our joining of hands in peace and harmony. No. The hatred among a few in top leadership simply will not let that happen.

👍👌👏 Exactly! Very well said. But there is a much stronger force behind politicians. The allmighty and extremely rich big industries (nevertheless still greedy for even more power and more money). This is what rules and ruins the world nowadays.

Powerful episode about trust crossing racial boundaries but more important about military ethics. Military doctrine clearly states that every soldier should only follow lawful orders. Unfortunately hatred of the enemy and the military culture of being subordinate to the chain of command make that kind of decision making very difficult. These issues are wrestled with in any military conflict--most recently in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

I think there are MANY good, honorable men in our society, leading good families to do right and to be honorable in everything. the number one killer of the pilgrims crossing the usa back then was chlorea from drinking tainted water--they buried their dead by creeks because of soft ground-also took a crap right in the creek so they could wash their butt at the same time--the native people knew better, thought the pilgrims were savages for their ass backwards ways-at least 25,000 died along the migration back then, whole family wiped out because of sickness, same for native peoples.life was harsh for everybody back then-my family immigrated to Mn in 1886-my grandpa was born in 1867,died in 1936,dad was born in 1910-this country is not far removed from the history of its birth from people of the old world of euro land-been to Plymouth rock, many of the battle grounds all over the usa--go to Little Bighorn river where Custer met his demise if you want to feel the ground move and feel the presence of the spirits--it is strong there unlike any place i have been

There's an ancient spring in Minnesota where we can still drink the water. It's been a sacred site for as far back as anyone knows. It was almost destroyed by a road expansion project in the late 1990s, but many people -- of many races -- all worked together to save it. Today it is still safe to drink from.
