    The Outcast
    Director: Lewis Allen
    Writer: Thomas Thompson
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 9 January 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
"The Cartwrights come to the aid of Leta Malvet when she is ostracized by the community after her father and brother are hanged by a lynch mob for killing two men while trying to rob the stagecoach that they thought carried the Ponderosa's payroll. But Adam is sure that the gang will try again when they find out that the Malvets came up empty-handed and suspects that it's no coincidence when Leta's beau, bad boy Clay Renton, comes back to town." Written by shepherd1138 on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
"Susan Oliver and Jack Lord guest star in this Bonanza. Oliver plays a girl who has just seen her father and brother lynched after a payroll robbery and the ,mob was ready to do same to her.
She stays for a bit At The Ponderosa and Dan Dan Blocker is most helpful gathering eggs while she's away. At the Ponderosa she ponders on her outlaw boyfriend Jack Lord. And all Lord thinks about is taking over his gang and robbing the Ponderosa payroll when it arrives.
Nice guest star performances from Oliver and Lord. Also take note of Edward Platt as a lecherous mercantile store owner and his wife Irene Tedrow one hatchet faced old hariden." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.de
"I've seen Irene Tedrow in a lot of guest appearances, and it seems she always has that sour look on her face! I don't usually like her character, and I can't remember if she ever plays nice characters or not).
This episode starts with a lynching. Though it's revealed early in the episode that the father and son were indeed guilty of robbery and murder, the lynching was still something that should not have happened. The daughter/sister is devastated at seeing her family killed in such a manner and has to spend a few days recovering at the Cartwright home (isn't it interesting how many women are taken care of at the Cartwright home without a woman in sight???)
She has a boyfriend who lies to her about his involvement. She's in love with him and is blinded by his badness. Leta is treated like a thief as well and is shunned by the townspeople who really want nothing to do with her (but will buy her eggs). Leta and Clay's story is never pretty and doesn't end that way either." Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

Susan Oliver was brilliant as an actress, as an aviator, as a writer and as a director. She had the talent to direct an episode of Star Trek, but was turned down. As a boy, I had a big crush on her. She was devoted to her craft, to the industry, and to those that worked in the industry. She died surrounded by her fellow artists and workers.

Not always. There are quite a few episodes where he misjudges the character of someone he thought was his friend who then betrays him and some other were he was wrong in other ways. But in general he is a very wise man. Some people compare Ben intelligence to Adams since Adam had lots of education. But I still say Ben was WISER.

      Dear @@fluxcapacitor1621
👍👌👏 Exactly! You are absolutely right! I watched Bonanza and Shiloh Ranch as a kid (unfortunately Big Valley with the gorgeous Barbara Stanwyck wasn't available in Germany 50 years ago). As a more than grown up man, I now unfortunately/sadly have to realize, how extremely cheap Bonanza (amongst other series) was produced. This fact wasn't easy to see while being a child and having only black and white TV. Even not with the first colour TVs. Way too much scenes have been filmed in studios (more or less badly done). For instance: freezing weather and fake snow on the ground but no steam can be seen while breathing out. Or an Indian woman with makeup like a mannequin posing for a title photo. 😁
      Best regards luck and health.

"there's one thing a man cannot do, is to tell a woman, whom to love and whom not to"
Golden words that held good back when we lived in caves and will hold good till end of time. Those fine, upstanding Cartwrights, the world sure can do with more of them, and with series like this which do good without sermonising. I wish I could be as upright a man as Ben Cartwright, but I know I could never be. I know I'd lust after a woman like Leeta and would atleast make her a proposal even if I wouldn't push the matter.
And dang if I'm wrong, every episode I see, I think they can't beat this. And then they go and do just that. Thank you Grinjgo.

I felt sorry for Susan Oliver, when she ran out, all excited, at sewing the beautiful dress, for the bizarre, and Irene Tedrow rejected it, even though I know it's just an act, I do know that feeling.
Some years back, in my 20s when I first tried my hands at cooking, but never seemed to come up to par with my mama, and older sister's cooking, who had done all the cooking when I lived there, and never pressed me to cook too, and I lavished in that freedom from cooking, but it was a handicap when I was grown, and on my own. But one day I finally fried some chicken, where I really liked my cooking, and I was so happy excited about that, about like how Susan was, in that scene, and took a piece out in my apartment complex, where some men were standing, and told them I had made the best chicken ever, and asked them to taste it, and they did, smiling kind and polite, and said it was good. Years later I thought about that day, and thought how goofy I must have seen to those strange men, but they never gave that impression, just like they understood I was green and square, but really was happy about doing something right. And they never laughed or joked about it. But imagine if they had rejected it.
I just always find it interesting to see a show where something lines up with something that happened, in your life, it helps you see there are others like you, and you don't feel alone on an island. So I still felt sorry for Susan because she put her dress, in the wrong hands. It wasn't the dress they rejected, it was her. She could have sewn a beautiful gown befitting the queen of England and they would have rejected it. Bonanza stories always have a moral to them, and something to learn from. About the best western series ever made.✌🏽
