The Spartans were not that big of a deal. They created an aura of invencibilidade but they had a similar win ratio to other Greeks. Theban sacred band were much more well regarded.
What if their win rate is so low because the ones who decided to fight them were only the ones strong enough to challenge them, and the weaker ones just didn't fight at all?
The Spartans also had to be very careful about when and how much of their army they took on campaign because the threat of a Helot uprising. Most of their armies had a contingent of Spartans with the rest being Allies and slave soldiers.
I have heard people say that as well. So, what if they weren’t winners most of the time. But it’s not about that. It’s about their ethos. For example, the Vikings were hardly empire builders but they were feared as fighters. Sometimes it’s not about their wins or expansion. Another example, the Japanese soldier during WW2 was something to be respected and feared. They lost battle after battle, but they were hardened and strong fighters.
While I agree somewhat with you saying 'fascism didn't exist.' Isn't that why they put proto in front of it? Also, just because something didnt have a name or a fleshed out system (such as when Mussolini created the term Fascism) that doesn't mean Fascism didn't exist in the past. It really comes down to how you view Fascism, but then that opens the door for interpretations of many things. Like if you think Mussolini created Fascism and only his system is Fascist, then Fascism has only actually been tried one time (Mussolini's Italy). All other attempts weren't really Fascist, such as Nazi Germany. So if we want to be literal, we can be, but then history becomes very difficult to explain because no nation has ever been like another nation. They always have some differences in their governance, economic systems, etc. Do you see how complicated history would be if we didn't generalize some stuff? I am not an expert on Sparta, so I can't really comment whether they were Fascist or not. Obviously, if we are being literal, no, they weren't Fascist. Fascism wasn't even a term back then. However, it may be a case where they were Fascist before we had a term for it (hence the proto-fascist label).

or
"APOLLO CMON JUST NOTICE THE CAVALRY ON THE FLANK" like man that hurt.
