I prefer full ABS. It's quicker and it also doesn't mean the home plate umpires will lose their jobs as some people think. ABS can only call balls and strikes. Home plate umps have to do a lot more than just that. Was it a full swing? Did he foul the ball off? Did the pitcher balk? Was the runner safe or out at the plate? etc, etc, etc. Let the umpires focus on those things and ABS handle the balls and strikes. Nothing is worse than a big game getting ruined by an umpire. Let's make it easier for the umps to force both teams to follow the rules more accurately. The rules are there for a reason. A ball is a ball for a reason and a strike is a strike for a reason. ABS doesn't have to replace any umpire. It can just help them do a better job.

i prefer full abs as well, but it seems like the technology is still not there to accurately adjust to players height and stance. also i don’t think the exact shape of the strike zone is clearly defined in the rule books. i.e. should it be rectangular or roundish? i think we need more rules to define the strike zone better and have a challenge system to the abs. i.e. human umps would review calls from robots.

As someone who listens to Triple-A baseball on a nightly basis, the challenge system is just something that the broadcasters amuse themselves with for some false drama. Of course, the players question the full ABS games, but since appeal games go to ABS anyway, there's little reason to not use the computer system. You don't miss questioning calls by the ump in ABS games.

It’s also gonna correct pitches that were called balls but were strikes. Everyone is only thinking one direction and it won’t. Pitch framing is a part of baseball and has always been a part of it.

I hope they can find a way to convey balls and strikes to the umpire. Lights in their mask, buzzer in their ear...i dont care. Gimme accurate balls and strikes with the ump calling them? That's perfection imo.
And YES i hope it brings back big curves or other creative ways to get the baseball to hit the zone! Might trend us away from the velocity obsession that is wrecking arms.

if pitch framing goes away its not a bad thing. Trying to fool the ump isnt good for baseball. full ABS!

I'd rather see full ABS than the challenge system. some of these umps just extend the zone all game long.

Ditto. It will come. It has to.
Replay challenges seem just right with how many occur in a game. Only a few challenges for hundreds of pitches per game?? Won't solve the issue. We'll see key moments influenced by a call reversal which will make late-game bad calls that much worse when challenges are used up.
Maybe it lasts a season, but soon as the tech gets 99.9% accurate it will be used on every pitch I expect.

I think Umps cave his own grave, but give the managers 3 challenges a game for balls and strikes and maybe that could fix the problem

Outside of a a few egregious calls (like a ball a foot outside being called a strike), most calls are pretty close. I think two thirds of the pitching complaints come from fans that rely on that little box on the TV. Get rid of the box and you will see fewer social media posts about bad calls. Plus, I miss the great arguments back in the day that was part of the entertainment of baseball. I mean, watching Earl Weaver, Lou Pinella, Billy Martin, Hal McRae or Tommy Lasorda going after an ump was classic... I mean that because I believe Technology is killing the human element of the game. Hernandez is gone, now get rid of C.B. Bucknor.

Challenge system would be an absolute EMBARRASSMENT. Not baseball at all. Bring the automatic zone or leave it alone. MLB tries SO HARD to shave a few minutes off the game and yet they're willing to pause the game to change balls and strikes. Ridiculous

Receiving *shouldn't* be what we value catchers for, or indeed all players if you start allowing deceptive framing to eclipse the value of Mike Trout. I'll buy a ticket to watch Mike Piazza types play, not see some hack that can cheat an umpire.

Is there any concern with a fully auto zone that teams will just not put a catcher back there with no one on and less than 2 strikes?
Why put a body back there?

    • @chrisnapolitano5298

Also- no reason for catchers to be in a full squat with runners on…no more stolen bases

    • @jameslmarsh
      @jameslmarsh 3 місяці тому

No concern. Just like they regulate infield positions no to prevent shifts, they can just penalize a team that doesn't catch a pitched ball.

expecting perfection from officials in a game that has a stat called "error" is a fool's errand.

Aaron Judge is 6'7" Altuve is 5'6. Will they have the same strike zone??? If a batter has a Rickey Henderson stance, is his zone smaller???

Who gives a crap if the value of "stealing strikes" is diminished. Call strike strikes and balls balls it's so damn basic to the game. Why are you asking catchers anyway???
