  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes shattered all expectations upon its release in 2011, revitalizing a franchise that had long been thought dead and kickstarting my favorite trilogy of films I've ever seen. Let's talk about how that happened.

    • @manictiger
      @manictiger 3 роки тому +74

I actually think this is one of the mistakes they made. I don't think the Gorilla should have been killed off. I think Rocket (just had to Google him) should have been more memorable.
LOTR is an example of how many characters should stick around throughout a trilogy. I think the Planet of the Apes trilogy had too many characters come and go throughout. It makes it harder to care about "the group". It was a great trilogy, second to none others made from 2010 - 2020, but it doesn't have the same impact as LOTR, even though it could have.

@@manictiger Well throughout the trilogy, it's made clear that Rocket and Maurice are Caesar's best friends. In fact, they're the only ones who actually stick with him through the whole trilogy. Buck died(may he rest in peace), Koba started a mutiny(and then died as well), and then Luca also died. I completely get what you're saying. But even in small scenes that dont have too much impact on the plot, Maurice and Rocket are always there. Such as whenever Malcolm and co are trying to get the dam started. Caesar is there on horse back waiting for them at the surface. Who else is there with him? Rocket and Maurice.

      @@gayfrog6015
A smart leader doesn't put high ranking officers into high risk situations. Loyalty and talent is too rare for that. Caesar is supposed to be a literal genius, somewhere around 140 - 170 I.Q. That's how he's portrayed in the first movie, easily acing puzzles most humans struggle with.
At the end, yes, that's when you kill off beloved characters to show that the odds have turned against the heroes, and that sacrifices have to be made to get back on track. But killing 2/3rds of Caesar's crew from the first film, renders a lot of the ape cage and liberation scenes less important and even bleeds time out of the second film, as they spend about 40 minutes trying to rebuild sentiment, instead of building the next plot in a faster and more sophisticated manner.
That kind of exposition is never needed in Star Wars 5 and 6 or LOTR 2 and 3. You know the characters and stakes by the second film and it just goes straight into action.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the heck out of the Planet of the Apes trilogy. Watched it multiple times. But, I see directing errors that I don't see in other trilogies. I think they weren't sure if the 1st one would be a success, so they put all their chips down in the first one, and had to rebuild sentiment and suspense after doing that.

Ceaser rejects Will because he doesnt want to leave the other apes in captivity the way that they were. When he turns around, you can see his face visibly trying to keep his composure because he had to pretty much reject his father to free his people/apes.

I agree. And I disagree with what the narrator said about how Will looked at Caesar. I think Will genuinely cared for Caesar; that he really did view himself as Caesar's father, for all intents and purposes. Caesar wasn't a mere ape to Will. He was Will's family.

@@Chocobear555I think he came to that conclusion due to the leash in Wills hand. To me (and to Ceasar) he knows he means well (he turned his back because it was a hard decision to make). But that doesn't matter.
It's what that leash the hand gesture represents not the intent. If he goes back, Ceasar is back at square one just looking at the world passing by in that familar yet small window. Leaving the other apes behind in this cycle of abuse. This is what made Ceasar saying "NO!" so powerful. He is done submitting going for scraps and not truly being free. Ceasar never hated Will. He even understands why he made those decisions. But something has to give to break that system.

I think his shame at what he was, comes directly from the fact he wasn't what he thought he was. A perfect reflection of the human condition. What we accept unquestioning, as human nature, is nothing more than learned behaviour.

So if they repeat something like a name they don’t know that it’s a name, but they know it elicits a specific response from others (their caretakers). The fact that they can’t create a new sentence from random words is proof that the words have no meanings, but they know to repeat a phrase if they want something.
Caesar on the other hand creates sentences from new and random words. That is proven by the fact that he and many apes can use sign language which birds cannot. Thus when Caesar speaks it is proof that he is not just copying, he is using language. He understands that “no” has a meaning and that is why he says it.

Incredible video essay. I've always felt these films were so freaking underappreciated because so few people gave them a chance due to the "stigma," if you will, of the previous Planet of the Apes films. Really loved seeing all the reasons I love this trilogy spelled out for me.

I just watched the Trilogy for the first time in my life. Woah... I. Am. Astonished. I watched them without subtitles but the actors had such amazing performances that it wasn't needed to understand them; even the side characters were phenomenal. Some of the greatest written films I've seen both objectively, and subjectively, of all time. I began learning sign language because of this film trilogy and plan on getting Caesar on my left leg.

Damn, it’s crazy cuz I feel like most people can actually relate to Caesar. The feeling of isolation, an outcast, betrayed by the people you trusted, thus shaping you into a leader of your own domain. Acquiring the ability to defend yourself mentally and physically. Then when the people that left you return, you realize you never needed them in the 1st place. Though you are grateful, you no longer crave their company as you did before because now you found a new home, a new people. Before you were alone and weak. Now you’re with your people, stronger than ever before.
