i'll never understand guys like you. what have you been listening to all these years? this is good music but the best for AT LEAST 20 years? There was a lot of great albums. What is the world you live in?
@@quantumeseboy there is not about range of opinions, there's about their limitations. I admit different opinion but i discuss the point of this opinion.
That is a poet over there. In the vein of Bowie, Lou Reed and Kate Bush, an artist in the full extent of the word. Her album is the best thing ive heard in years. Maybe in more than a decade.
I had the privilege & pleasure of knowing Tia aka Spellling as a roommate for a couple of semesters as an undergrad & sometimes she’d practice her slam poetry performance with me in our room, and i always shed tears of awe. So happy she continues to move the rest of the world in the same way
What are these people talking about playback and no bass even saying? The vocals are clearly live and different from the album version and the bass has a really nice groove, at least with headphones on.
Ah, thx for giving the hint w/ the bass. Until then i was just irritated by the voice. Im sorry to say but... clearly playback. The guy w/ the bass plays completely different licks to what you hear sometimes. he is playing the same track but as said some fills are completely different to what you hear. Well and the voice was what struck me right away as complete fake. See, she is constantly changing distance to the mic, direction she sings etc. If youd actually would hear the original sound source youd have a constant change in signal in a way that you can hardly fix in a postrecording mastering session yet the recording is absolute perfect constant levelled. Id go sofar to say that it is recorded in a close mic setting(you hear the near mic effect at times) and def not with the mic you are seeing.
never heard of her until fantano review so I went to check her out and she is a truly talented artist and these vocals are so angelic and the production of this album was so amazing truly on of the best alternative albums I've heard in the past couple of years
If this is playback it's obviously different from the album version and her syncing is insane. In other words, it ain't playback. This is phenomenal musicianship.
A star is born….dang! Diggin this sound. Groovy baselines and everything is so tight! So hard to nail on the down tempo sections, but these guys make it come off so easy. The perfect piano complement really let’s the lyrics soar.
I finally saw her last month in Portland, one of the greatest performances I've ever seen live. Spellling is destined to go down in history as one of the best to ever do it.
i love her and this album as much as the rest of you but this is definitely multiple video takes spliced together with one studio recorded audio track. you can see it multiple times through out that the bassist is clearly not playing what you hear, and that they splice together different takes of the same songs. I dont think this was for any nefarious reasons and i dont doubt spellling is a great performer, i just think they wanted to make something that sounds and looks nearly perfect for this video, which i respect.
I played in a band for a long while, and from my experience, it was probably one actual live take, and then they basically mimed playing to that original live take to get multiple camera angles without multiple cameras. Still totally live, but some of the mimed playing might not totally match up to the original time they played it
def playback. basssplayer plays completely different fills at times and she constantly moving distance to the mic, singing in every direction yet perffect levelled signal all the time? and that with a old 70s mic?;)
Also the bass doesn’t correlate with what you hear sometimes because they have track instruments besides the piano and that bass. So you are hearing another additional prerecorded bass, that doesn’t match what the guy live is playing and that’s why it seams weird but if you pay attention you can hear what he is playing live.
The audio is a live take, but the video is definitely spliced together with a few different takes. A lot of live videos are done that way, especially if they only have one camera but want the cinematic look of a multi angle video. They'll usually do one "full band" live take which will be the one with live audio, then they'll do close-ups of each instrumentalist miming to that live take, or some version of that approach, to give the video a bit more dynamics!
was enjoying this performance but saw something kinda weird. she's nodding at 5:24 in closeup and then jumps to mid shot and she's not nodding at all while the flow of music continues underneath. perhaps a live take with vocals and instrumentation edited together? either way love the music and arrangement...kinda sucks she puts on so many 'airs' with her voice but its probably part of her thing.
Yeah, the video is definitely spliced together with a few different takes. A lot of live videos are done that way, especially if they only have one camera but want the cinematic look of a multi angle video. They’ll usually do one “full band” live take which will be the one with live audio, then they’ll do close-ups of each instrumentalist miming to that live take, or some version of that approach, to give the video a bit more dynamics!
You can literally hear the sound her lips make when they rapidly separate or when she pushes air thru her teeth. If you don’t know what you are talking about, don’t even bother sharing your input on things.
well...Julian...you are not easily deceived, right? :) i do think i know very well what im talking about, clearly YOU dont! I am a musician, own a small studio and do Mixing/Mastering myself. If you think that you can maintain a constant and perfect voice level with an old 60's mic while singing in all kinds of directions - you is not to help. Well, or just as stated in the beginniing: you have not the slightest idea of how recording works. That aside: KEXP responded to the critic further down stating that due to the COVID situation they instead of doing live recordings accepted material from the artists themselves and put it up. Even though they are aware that as in this case is a prerecorde dub. They just found it worthwhile.

she's throwing down some heavy Denise Williams/Patrice Rushen style vocal fancyness in there. so sick. This whole thing is fire.
