The main thing about this episode is Bertolt's change. Here's Bertolt's plan. First, his original purpose was to come out of the barrel, to transform and kill the soldiers there. As shown in 2x7, Reiner does not die even if it is caught in transforming explosion when he is in the body of Armored titan However, his body was sticking out of the Armored titan's body, and Bertolt noticed it and stopped transforming. He approaches Reiner and asks him to lie back. Then he approaches Armin and talks. Armin's purpose was to gain time by talking to Bertolt, and in the meantime, other soldiers approached Reiner and finished him. But this was also on Bertolt's prediction, and he pretended to have been deceived by Armin's plan to bring the soldiers together. Moreover, he asked Reiner to lie back, so that he could no longer die if Bertolt makes the transforming explosion. As planned, he transforms on top of the soldiers gathered in one place, and most of the soldiers there would have died except for Reiner. And Bertolt shows good combat power enough to fight Mikasa in this process. Bertolt, who had been naive in the past, noticed that the world was cruel and no longer hesitated to kill, so he became a much more capable man. This is the main thing of this episode.

Bertholdt is not a fanatic. This kind of thinking is from POV of a scout. If you look at Bertholdt's actions from the POV of someone who grew up where and how he did, you can see that how he acts and things he says actually shows that even though he takes responsibility and obligations very seriously, he isn't brainwashed at all and fully understands the enemy point of view, and he doesn't believe they are any less human.
Similar to Annie, who always slacked off which may have lead to her getting a lower rank than she was actually capable of, Bertolt was described as perfect but lacked the initiative to give him that extra boost. Had he and Annie actually tried during training, they might've surpassed Reiner and competed for the 2nd rank. Or maybe even the 1st since they've both gone toe to toe against Mikasa without seeming out of their league like everyone else who does. In this episode, Bertolt finally finds his resolve and sees the bigger picture, even though he cares about the people here, he has to do what he set out to do. His theme, Apple Seed, is amazing and the lyrics are really sad. There's also the parallel of both him and Mikasa seeing the world as cruel. 19:41 this is the only part of AOT that i don't like.. i wish they left it unanswered how Reiner survived these attacks rather than half-heartedly explaining it with a reason like transferring consciousness.. i feel like this show is bigger than that.
Well AOT is not our Universe with our laws of physics. In the AOT universe, physics allows for magic/supernatural abilities. For example, mass appearing out of nowhere to form a titan body. Founding titan wiping memories from a distance. Controlling titans remotely via magical power. So its very possible that in the AOT universe, spirit/soul exists and contains the essence of consciousness. This soul/spirit can be contained in the brain and in the case of the armored titan, move around any bundle of nerves I guess. In fact, many people in our Universe also believe that consciousness resides in the soul/spirit and lives on even after your brain is destroyed. Obviously, science and logic dictates that if there is no evidence for something, there is no point in believing in it and it most likely does not exist. But science is still not able to rule it out completely that your spirit lives on after your brain is destroyed/rots. In AOT physics, there is clear evidence at this point that consciousness in not tied to the brain. So scientifically and logically speaking, the author got nothing wrong with the armored titan's power.
Well of course we feel bad for him too (as I said immediately after), it would be pretty weird if we didn’t. It’s possible to sympathise with more than one character at a time, though 😂
