I positioned my camera on the river bank by the side of New Quay Road, which runs along the Lune Industrial Estate in Lancaster. The bore came into view in front of the ‘Golden Ball’ pub/hotel located down the river at Snatchems. There was a lone guy following the wave in a kayak, which gives some sort of scale to the size of the wave in front of him.
As the wave worked its way towards me it was mainly of breaking form, but became more rolling as it got closer and passed me. The largest wave I observed was around 3ft (91.5m) high. Once the bore passed a series of well-defined standing waves could be seen in mid-river, which I filmed. I guess these conform to wave mechanics, depending on depth, bathymetry, velocity etc.
Expected high tide at Heysham on 11th September, 2014 : 10.2m at 13:32
The bore passed the Golden Ball pub/hotel at 11:40
Largest wave observed approximately 3ft (91.5cm) high. There was little freshwater in the river as it had not rained for quite a while.
I filmed the same bore earlier on as it passed Sunderland Point - search UA-cam for : tidal bore sunderland point rob bridges
