  • A dashing grey, remarkably versatile and the people's champion - the legendary Desert Orchid often obliged with the wish of a 'white Christas' in the late 80s and the brilliant chaser landed an unprecedented fourth triumph in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day in 1990 for trainer David Elsworth.
Desert Orchid has actually made an underwhelming start to the 1990/91 campaign, finishing second in the Haldon Gold Cup on his reappearance before being beaten 20 lengths into fourth in the Tingle Creek. He was 9/4 for this King George, the first time he had been odds-against for the race since he won it in 1986.
The crowd erupted as 'Dessie' brilliantly jumped the last and received a rapturous ovation as he crossed the finish line, a fitting tribute to one of the indisputable modern greats of jumps racing.

Favourite horse ever. Some of those handicap wins were sensational giving lumps of weight away.

Yet always travelled like carrying 3 stone less than the other horses.

The sign in the background just after the third last, "The All Time Great" - couldn't be more appropriate. Wonderful chaser & the greatest weight carrier since Arkle & Flying Bolt.

If I recall correctly The Fellow won The Gold Cup a couple of years later. How could anyone not have loved Dessie!
