Crow! I remember Nirvana blaring from my son's room when he was a teenager. I still know many of the lyrics to many of the songs too! I loved the unplugged version of 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night'
Going back through some of my old reaction requests agree Asia Nirvana has such a unique distinctive sound Kurt Cobains voice blends perfectly with that sound and the guitaring definitely one of a kind
Fun fact - the main riff in "Come as You Are" was lifted from Killing Joke's song from 1984, "Eighties". Kurt was a fan of Killing Joke and he anticipated that they'd be upset. And, prior to that, the riff was also used by British punk band The Damned years earlier. So it's been around. But Killing Joke's "Eighties" is a banger, listen to it if you haven't. I've always loved Killing Joke's social commetary
Nirvana definitely has their own sound! BJ you have a rock soul!! You seem to really get into heavy rock or rock period!!❤️love the way you guys get into all kinds of rock!!!
I remember watching MTV News when Kurt Loder told us about Kurt's death. It was a few weeks into April so I thought they might be pulling some weird late April Fools joke but then I went into school the next day and everybody was talking about it.
"Introduced" is a stretch, but yes it sure did take off, LOL. You're right about that. And nobody, including Nirvana, saw it coming. Other than that, i'd say Husker Du, The Replacements, Sonic Youth and REM had a hand in making the major record industry more open to signing a band like Nirvana.
@@avestuart you're absolutely right about those bands. I agree with Gerald though in terms of Nirvana being the first of those alternative bands to really blow up to the level they did (MTV Music Awards, Cobain becoming an A List celebrity, #1 album, etc..) The popularity of Nirvana made alternative the new mainstream
Alternative Rock is just a broad term encompassing any Rock that is alternative to mainstream Rock, hence the name. It wasn't during this time and never was a term to describe a sound. Alternative Rock had been a thing since the late 60s garage band/pub band era which subsequently led to the 70s Punk Rock movement most famously made a thing by The Ramones that led to the big Punk Rock explosion in the UK with The Sex Pistols who were formed by Malcolm McLaren after returning from New York and seeing the underground music scene featuring bands like Ramones, Talking heads, Blondie and Television. And The Clash who started off as Ramones copycats down to Dee Dee's 1,2,3,4 fast count off to every song. That then led to all the initially Alt Rock famous sounds of Post Punk and New Wave and so on that fed the 80s none hair bands sound, some of which were quite popular and mainstream internationally and some like the Pixies that were only popular in the UK, which then subsequently informed the 90s Grunge sound that Nirvana popularized by knocking MJ off the number 1 spot on the Billboard charts. Nirvana neither introduced or were even the first to popularize Alternative Rock to the world, but did do so with Grunge.
Nirvana introduced "grunge", along with a few others (also dubbed the "Seattle Sound"). "Alternative" rock was bought into the mainstream by bands like U2 and Red Hot Chili Peppers, although I personally think the OG was Frank Zappa.
Kurt was very melodic in his singing. Nirvana for as hard as they were they were also very poppy and they incorporated a lot of pop sensibilities into their music. Kurt was supposedly a big Beatles fan and that's where a lot of that pop and mainstream element came from. Butch Vig, who worked on the Nevermind album said anytime Kurt didn't want to do something he'd just tell Kurt "Paul (McCartney) did it" and that would get Kurt to do it.
Normal Nirvana sound, moody, dark and eery. Like you're going through a dark forest just before dusk, but hear the odd bird twitter and wind brushing through the trees and shrubs. Deep darkness but with a little light to it, to p I'll you out but still keep you there.

You simply cannot truly appreciate Nirvana without watching their actual music videos or live performances....a screen with mere lyrics simply doesn’t cut it and isn’t even half the cake!
When I was an art student in college, I was walking thru the art building one day when I saw a classmate of mine. He was kinda like a hippie skateboarder, and he had an acoustic guitar. Not that concerned about getting to class on time, I sat down and listened to him play. Then he asked if I had any requests. I thought for a moment and said, “Come As You Are”. He strummed the strings a few times, working it out. Then he sat there and played that main guitar riff that’s so memorable.
It was a cool guitar part, because it wasn't too hard to learn and participate; it made it feel approachable. Of course, the hard part was making it sound like him...
The words are so of the times- soaked in bleach - we were all paranoid about AIDS at the time - he references it in Smells like teen spirit - I feel contagious. It’s almost like you had to be in your 20s at the time to understand the weight that left on all of us.

I will never forget the feeling of watching Nirvana take over in real-time. I’m old AF, and I love them now as much as I did in the 90’s. No one could match Cobain’s voice & lyrics.

Per Songfacts Kurt Cobain described this song as "About people, and what they're expected to act like." The lyrics are intentionally contradictory and confusing, with one line rebutting the next: "As a friend, as an old enemy" "Take your time, hurry up" The chords in this song are a slowed down replica of Killing Joke's 1985 song "Eighties." The songs were so similar that Nirvana considered holding off releasing the song as a single. Killing Joke considered legal action, but when Kurt Cobain died, they decided not to sue. ("It's a short f--king life, mate - we could be going fishing or something sensible," lead singer Jaz Coleman explained). In this song, Cobain sings over and over, "I don't have a gun." Less than three years after the song was released, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This was an eerie turn of events, but it's unlikely that Cobain had suicide on his mind when he wrote the lyrics. The gun could be a reference to a time when Cobain's mother got mad at her husband (Kurt's stepfather) and threw his guns in a river. Cobain says he recovered some of them, sold them, and used the money to buy his first guitar when he was 15.
"I don't have a gun" has literally nothing to do with his death. It's a statement of "I mean no harm". People like to read way too into Kurt's lyrics in hindsight.
Cool. I woke, poured ☕, put on my Nirvana shirt and hit UA-cam. Now seeing BJ getting into them! Hope y'all get into their more punk sounds. Like, BREED. Badass jam.

Yes! One of their best songs. Very haunting. Hearing it either 5 yrs ago or now it's a gut-punch because Kurt did have a gun. He killed himself with a gun in 1994. That will always stay with me. I love how Kurt wrote his lyrics, they didn't necessarily mean anything or tell a story but they just work. Then you have a song like School with only 2 lines in the whole song but it's so powerful, great reaction guys

I liked a few of their songs, but I wouldn't say I was a big fan of nirvana or grunge. Around this time I was listening more to GnR, def leppard, judas priest and ac/dc.
Definitely the best known and arguably the best, but def not the only and not the first to put that sound together. The whole Pacific Northwest had been brewing that emo guitar matched up with relatively basic pop type rhythms for a few years. The Portland scene was a little different tho similar (tho a major influence on Kurt was Portland’s The Wipers), but a host of bands around Seattle from the mid 80s on started putting that sound together. Green River (Pearl Jam/Mudhoney forerunners), Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, TAD…soon every label rep in the country was descending on Seattle clubs.
I live in Seattle and was 20 when "Nevermind" came out. This record was definitely unanticipated in the way that it hit like it did. There so many other bands around town at that time, some who came before in the earlier 80s. You should check out The U-Men if you haven't. They had a massive impact on the Seattle sound of the later 80s.
Nirvana is and always has been hypnotic to me- you lose yourself in the music 🤌🤌 I can only imagine what kind of music they would’ve made had Kurt lived smh… RIP legend
I love Nirvana and I know this song but I didn’t realize that the word was in Spanish “memoria” this is not the same meaning in English as in Spanish. Ok memoria is memory in English but we don’t use it as remember something from past, we use it as the capacity of the mind to remember and keep things. It’s interesting he uses the word in Spanish.
I was in study hall in HS when I learned about his death. Grunge era was my era, but I put Pearl Jam on top of the list all day, then Alice in Chains. Cobain's polarizing personality sort of made the 14 year old me dismiss him and his music once he trashed Pearl Jam.
Not bullshit at all. That title was supposed to be an FU to the press that always said he seemed angry and pissy and miserable. But he just wound up putting it on a b-side. A song by the way that has nothing to do with the title.
There’s a band called One Less Reason I’d like to see you guys react to. They have a fan base but aren’t well known as a lot of other bands. I wouldn’t mind seeing them getting some recognition. Now some earlier stuff doesn’t have videos because they were just starting it but newer stuff does have videos. They done a great cover of Prince’s When Doves Cry. They have another song called Favorite Color I really like. Newer stuff like Break Me and Uneasy have videos. Please put them in your list of future songs please please please? Thank you and you’re welcome. Oh one more artist is Jonny Lang and try his song Lie to Me. It’s a little bluesy soul type music.
Im a huge fan of Nirvana and huge fan of Kurt Cobain. There is something so disturbing and more revealing now since his suicide in this song. I havent been able to listen to this particular song, honestly since Kurt choice to leave this world. The lyrics mixed with the haunting tone makes it more appearant to me that he was telling us for a while that he just wasnt coping with life well. Weird mixture of genius and madness on this downward spiral that none of us really understood was happening. I think about him at times wondering if he were drug free and psychologically stable today what his thoughts would be on everything in the world today. I bet he would have had some insight to the madness around us. RIP Kurt gawwwd your music lives on.
Hello Asia and BJ 😄such a great and respectful reaction for Nirvana by you guys , this is how fans of Nirvana around the world should remember their iconic songs over the years , always listening to them , song Come as you are together with huge hits like Smell like teen spirit , heart shaped box , and much more are truly my favorite one and always will be ❤ Kurt Cobain on the guitar , Dave Grohl on the drums , such an awsome sound ever of the 90's ❤
Seemed to be something sinister regarding the lyrics...come as a friend...an old enemy...I don't have a gun... Like...inviting an old enemy and reassuring them you won't shoot them...? Well, turns out Cobain DID have a gun... RIP
This song is purposefully contradictory to demonstrate how society norms are contradictory. “Come as you are” ( be yourself, be Real) “Come as I want you to be” (make sure you act how society wants and expects). Impossible to do both.
Their drummer is pretty good. He's gonna make a name for himself someday.

I REMEMBER WHEN NEVERMIND WAS RELEASED, NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT BEFORE OR SINCE.
Suggestion… listen to 80’s hair metal, then Nirvana. Changed the landscape of music.
btw... he did have a gun
Nothing will ever beat Smells Like Teen Spirit. RIP Kurt
To think this spawned Foo Fighters with Dave Grohl who’s also very talented along with Taylor Hawkins is just wild the reach they had
It makes me upset too. I hope justice will get served
I'm pretty sure the "memoria" lyric is actually meant as: "memory, a..." despite what most of the notoriously inaccurate lyric websites claim.
Hell yeah y’all the best
Wow. I’ve heard this song a lot, but today it hit different. Really nostalgic.

Checkout Something in the Way by Nirvana. Great reaction guys 🙋🏻♀️👏🏼👍🏼🙌🏼💜🇨🇦
The guitar was completely taken from Eighties by Killing Joke
Now listen to Aerozeppelin, White Lace n Strange and Token Eastern song... dirty beautiful grungy distorted guitar..it's heaven..lol...
Turns out that Kurt did in fact have a gun... and he blew his brains out. ✌️
What a dummy.
Grunge is great...Nirvana and Alice in Chains...the songs and lyrics resonate with this Gen X r
Frances bean Cobain can sing too it's Kurt Cobain daughter she sang smells like teen spirit and she dedicated a song called angel to her dad
I was in study hall in HS when I learned about his death. Grunge era was my era, but I put Pearl Jam on top of the list all day, then Alice in Chains. Cobain's polarizing personality sort of made the 14 year old me dismiss him and his music once he trashed Pearl Jam.
Speaking of "soaked in bleach", check out the "Soaked in Bleach" documentary on Cobain's death.
Also that whole Kurt didn't kill himself is bullshit. He literally wrote a song called "I hate myself and wish to die".
Not bullshit at all. That title was supposed to be an FU to the press that always said he seemed angry and pissy and miserable. But he just wound up putting it on a b-side. A song by the way that has nothing to do with the title.
@@wantutosigh1117 it's bullshit. He killed himself
You guys need to do the man who sold the world nirvana 😊
Kurt Cobain!! Nirvana!! Nothing more to say… Excellent choice, Asia & BJ!!
React to Nirvana - OLD AGE Lyrics -- the golden lyrics on blackground with exactly that spelling. You'll love it! :3
Yall should watch Soaked in bleach doc... bout Kurts deqth.. And how Courtney coulda had him offed.. good Band. And Good doc.
I think that's one of the documentaries Asia watched and is referring to. That or Who Killed Kurt Cobain.
Theres too much conflicting evidence to call suicide.
Undetermined.
Stop reading way too much into his lyrics in hindsight.
If you like this try their track- lithium
To me, this is the greatest song from the entire grunge era...I remember listening to this over and over in my car the night he killed himself
God Loves Grunge!!!
Seemed to be something sinister regarding the lyrics...come as a friend...an old enemy...I don't have a gun... Like...inviting an old enemy and reassuring them you won't shoot them...?
Well, turns out Cobain DID have a gun...
RIP
B.J. always likes it when the lead comes in...Heh...
Great song! 💖😎
Listen up class, Asia drops it on you at 6:07
This song is purposefully contradictory to demonstrate how society norms are contradictory. “Come as you are” ( be yourself, be Real)
“Come as I want you to be” (make sure you act how society wants and expects). Impossible to do both.
Interesting take, thanks.
To me it's come 1 come all. I don't hate you. I love you
