This is the song that made me want to be a bass player...from the time I was an infant bouncing in the crib whenever this theme song would start! Also probably had something to do with me wanting to be in a big city...all those skyscrapers! Great old photography of the beautiful New York scenery. Excellent video; thanks for posting.
I once considered becoming an architect based on pics of NYC. I ended up majoring in geography and urban planning, which is kinda like architecture’s little brother.
Just knowing how to play THIS Bass line got me the gig in the Church Band / Praise & Worship Team so many years ago... Thanks Pastor Geoff! LOVE YOU BROTHER!!!
I have a pic of downtown that I took from Liberty Island as my desktop, and it has a similar perspective as the video shot of downtown from across the East River, so every time i look at that pic when I turn on my computer in the morning, I hear that bass guitar playing the opening notes of this theme song in my head because it reminds me so much of that opening sequence! This was a great show! Got to watch it when it was brand new as a kid, and I still love it all these years later! Thanks for posting this!
Definitely not from the show. Recording sometime during the 80's, you can tell by the electric piano sound (which I think is actually coming from a Yamaha DX-7).
#ugottalisten2b4udie Bass Dan Ferguson Allyn Ferguson's son. Jack Elliott and Allyn Ferguson were the top team back then for TV themes and background music. Danny Ferguson also played the "Rockfords Files" theme as well
Simpler New York City Life. before the MetroCard, we had tokens. To pay our fare to board the subways and buses. Before the cellular phones, we had the payphones & the telephone. Early hip hop music was simple. using funk, & rock and roll samples from vinyl records.
The footage for this video appears to have been shot around 1973, or 1974 in Manhattan, given the titles for movies that were on display at the cinemas. Iconic footage with many people seen walking around carrying newspapers. How many people do you see carrying newspapers nowadays? Virtually none.
I'm sure glad you enjoyed. So many people have a lot of nit-picking critisism to offer (I'm trying to ease off on such rubbish myself)! If one has negative critique for an effort, one should get off one's arse and try to do better. Good onya.
Yes, good one. The 1973 "Kojak Buick" Century rollin by lookin for a perp on the run. Kojak drove a 4 door cop car version, and I had a Corgi Toys model of it with the red light on the roof. Back when cool toys existed.
Barney Miller has one of the best theme songs in TV history. I had never heard the full version. Awesome song.
Neither have I; quite a treat too!
Absolutely!
THE BEST (imo :-) )
The solo changed over the years. Greatest theme ever ...the bass
All these 70s shows with the great instrumental themes!
But that base line..........Wow! Then drop in the horns! Today’s music just doesn’t measure up period!

I'm surely glad you enjoyed, as I.

Takes me back to my childhood. Thanks for posting ☺️
Film shot in 1973. 'Gordon's War' was in the theaters, athough a '75 Ford taxi was shown, so possibly Fall '74.

Brings me back a few decades - I lived in NYC and this is so nostalgic. The tunes are excellent as well!
even if this isn't an original version, it's still extremely well done. I love this theme :)

Why is the drummer playing straight ahead, like he's never played funk before?
Oh MAN! This absolutely SMOKES! I would love to play this on a turntable and listen with giant headphones with the coil cords. Seriously
HEY TONI, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO LISTEN TO THE THEME SONG TO
''BARNEY MILLER'', MAYBY IT'L BRING BACK SOME MEMORIES.

For some reason I always thought this was Quincy Jones.

Gotta be David Sanborn on the alto solo

Was'nt this theme used a season or two for "The Cosby Show ", also ? Jesus is Love
No, but it is similar to the Night Court theme. Both shows shared most of the production staff
