  • Skypanels are the industry standard when it comes to production lighting and the definitely cost the part too. The big question though is are that worth all that dough? In this video, I give a rundown of what these lights are capable of and some of the highlight features. If you want to check out any of the tings I talk about more check out the links below.

Great video! I love skypanels. They are just so...usable. I have a Lupo Superpanel full color 60. Also an amazing light but I definitely miss some of the small features that make skypanels special. The external remote is a big one, and the gels/x y coordinates are another. You're absolutely correct in that they're fantastic when you have them in groups. They just work so well together in ways that the Lupo and even gemini don't.

For sure! I personally haven't tested the Lupo but they seam like a great alternative for a good price.

Great job, thank you! Only if I'm in a studio I would go for it.

We own the S30-C and love it. Paired with a center mount yoke and removing the bulkier stock yoke makes it much easier for transport. Using the super clamp adapter to place the PSU on the stand works great for us. Even with the weight we’ve had great success hanging the S30 on a big junior boom arm with 3’ DOPChoice Octobox. A Snapgrid, intensifier and wired remote make this a very versatile light for any shoot. I’ve used the Gemini lights next to the Skypanel and just am not a fan of the Gemini. The control placement of the Gemini is one of my least favorite traits.

I was at a light workshop by arri and the person that made this worshop said that the skypanels are so expensive because when they order the leds from china they have to throw away to many because they don't allow the tolerances to be too big ... so if they have a colorshift they went into the bin ... And other manufaturers have sometimes a colorshift, i will not name them because i do not think that is fair, but if you light a studio, you basically really want all the lights to be exactly the same ...

Skypanel used to be worth the money, when it was the only one available.. I love the Litepanels gemini 1x1 - and it's basically the replacement for skypanels IMO.. and there also are a ton of viable alternatives already available, and more coming out from a variety of companies, price ranges, and build qualities. Lupo has a great lightweight option for $1600 (superpanel full color 30, high color quality), Falconeyes has a more affordable option for $1300 (app controllable, Desal DS-811), velvetlight has a rainproof option for about $3k, and that's just the tip of the iceberg! Lights are awesome.

Some offer me $1600 for a set of this lights.
But just Google it and not sure but looks older lights and your comment makes me to keep looking for the other options.

You don't have to buy a Ferrari to enjoy it either some times you just need to rent one for a day and take it for a spin. :)

It's true, the Skypanels are insanely pricey for what they offer, but ever since I worked with them, I can't imagine any other light that is this rugged and solid. If a Skypanel tips over and crashes onto the floor, you better make sure your floor is okay, but the light will still work. You can tell Arri built them with the heaviest of use in mind, that's what makes Skypanels worth the money in my book.
Great video, I'd love to see this type of short review for the Arri L-Series fresnel lights as well, since I'm thinking of combining them with Skypanels.

I'll be using gels with higher CRI bi-colour lights until prices on RGB come down (Aperture)

It sure is worth it's price but if it's worth buying is hard to say. I guess if you are dead serious of making your living with storytelling movies, documentaries, image film or even industrial film you should consider invsting and buying the more expensive product that gives you more flexibility and reliability.
When I guy gear I pretty much learned to bring it down to one question: HOW FAR DOES IT GET YOU?
If whatever you buy can only do one thing look for something else (unless it is for doing a particular job that you need like Timecode Generator, in case you work with multiple cameras).
If whatever you buy can not be altered to be used in a different way look for something else.
If whatever you buy has a history of being unreliable look for something else.
If whatever you buy is brand new on the market wait until others figure out the downsides.
If whatever you buy intervenes with your worklflow look for something else.

You bought the SUN! haha how long have you had it? If you do a lot of productions and can rent it to the production you'll probably make your money back faster then with another brand.

they still have a lot of punch, so i think they are worth it if you buy it second hand--- butttttt there are so many better options now, ie you could get better color science and a ballast-free light with a quasar rainbow tube....or if you insist on a panel shape go lite panel or---- i mean why do you really need a panel though?

The light from the gemini is really great, not really worth the extra $2k for the Arri.

    • @lensprotogo
      @lensprotogo  4 роки тому +1

Yeah I personally use the Geminis more for my own projects but there is still demand for the Arris on sets.

The S30 is not brighter than the Gemini. The S60 is brighter.
S30 only has a power draw of 200wats. The Gemini has 325watts. S60 has 420watts.
The Arri's intensifier panel is a big help for the S30.
